you probably thought it was cool as hell, as you should

it was definitely cool and I enjoyed it a lot.

it felt like the missing link between Blade Runner and The Matrix, both in terms of style and story.

visually it was just as awesome as I heard it'd be, the music was pretty interesting. story was a bit clunky but still worked well.

biggest problem was the dialogue was either tech gibberish (and i literally work in tech) or just heavy-handed awkward "pondering" scifi talk.

I also watched it in English dub because I didn't want any text on the screen to take away from the visuals since that was clearly the focus.

That being said, the dub was frickin atrocious, for major especially. They made her sound like some sassy mid-western Karen.

Now that I know the story I'll definitely like to rewatch in the original audio.

The dub is particularly bad but even still the script is purposely dry and overly philosophical. You have to forgive the sci fi talk at the time as well, a lot of the tech in it has been realised today but at the time it really was fantastical.

I love the film and Oshii, Kenji Kawaiis OST is amazing and once you realise the chanting song is a ritual marriage celebration song you get a better understanding of what the union between the major and 2501 means.

I Def recommend his other movies especially Patlabor 2. A lot of people don't like Gits 2 but it's pure Oshii and a love letter to all his artistic obsessions (dolls, post humanism, french literature, urban landscape)

Not him but what a monkey's paw thinking cyberpunk worlds were cool in the 90s and wanting to live in one turned out to be

Instead of transhumanism we have trannies, instead of augmented reality we have moron phones and instead of cyberspace we have social media, what a fricking disgrace

Transphobia aside you're right, I think the best depiction of our current dystopia is in southland tales. Surveillance state and hyperconsumerism but no cool neon lights, just dirty and dilapidated infrastructure from the last century.

You will never be a woman. And people wouldn't hate you if you just did like in cyberpunk and modified yourself to look like a woman(male) without all the moronic autistic "I really AM an anime girl trapped in a disgusting man body uwu, and you're evil if you don't constantly pander to my delusions"

Pretty sad to think that the futurism culture of the 80s and 90s is so much cooler than the actual future we ended up having.
            We're definitely a disappointment.

innocence before s1+2 is moronic, you miss the point of motoko leaving section 9
          should do 1995 ->s1/s2 -> innocence ->SSS -> arise

The film and Innocence are their own continuity, the TV show is a separate continuity.

Only anime I've ever watched is the moomins. That one in the OP's picture and Akira are the only anime movies on my watchlist. I hope they are good. Blade Runner is one of my favourites.

I do have it next on my watch list, but what about after?

I heard vampire Hunter D, Paprika, Ninja Scroll are good, but I don't want any weeb shit, just pure kino that happens to be Japanese animation.

        Me again
It's one of those it's just as much about the city as it is the characters

always wondered why Japanese anime artists draw their characters with European faces instead of Asians like them

        now I see why...

No, but the more I'm exposed to anime the more I understand trannies.

Anime has always glorified femininity, even old stuff like Ghibli.

Modern adulty anime especially dwells on how amazing female bodies are and how powerful they are due to their sexual power of merely existing with boobs.

I can totally see how some mindbroken incel losers take an appeal to it and make it their pit-stop on their way to suicide.

The movie ponders a lot on identity and technology, but never takes a stance, same thing with Patlabor 2 also from Mamoru Ooshi regarding war and peace

i don't find this to be a problem. films can start, end , or meaningfully contribute to a discussion. it doesn't have to be all-in-one.
i think people only make your argument when they think others need to be told what to think.

I don't either, but it seems that the exposition was inserted in betweet the plot to help the viewer understand the themes, it's like day in Texas Chainsaw Massacre a character starts a monologue on Urban violence
