I think the TV show should explore the more kind natured part of the Dursley's. They should focus on the bad stuff when it relates to Harry, but like the deleted scenes in the movies they should explore Petunia's reaction to her sister's death, maybe include some flashbacks of Vernon and Petunia enjoying Harry as a baby and playing with him and Dudley. Maybe they could lean into implying that their mean spiritedness towards Harry wasn't out of some random hatred for him but out of caution, trying to keep him away from magic since it was magic that got his parents killed, and they secretly do care about him

There is 0 subtlety in Harry Potter, dursleys hated Harry since he was a baby. Like what could possibly justify putting a child in a broom closet without ventilation when you have three bedrooms. The bad guys are called death eaters ffs

        Anonymous

        > they secretly do care about him
But they don’t. Their hatred of them isn’t in his best interest. What does forcing him to sleep in a cupboard under the stairs when there is a spare bedroom available do to curb his tendencies toward magic? And Petunia knows enough about the magic in this universe to know that you either a wizard or you aren’t. If they simply wanted him to stay away from the wizarding world because they feared how it may effect his safety, it would make more sense to shower him with affection and tell him about the magical world but paint it as a horrible place. Making his life hell and pushing him to wish for an escape from his horrific situation is the exact opposite thing they should be doing.

The spare bedroom thing is fricked, but generally I can see why it might at least be upsetting, having a baby dropped off at your doorstep when five weeks ago you just had your own baby. As a tax paying adult, it's upsetting that you now have to provide for not one but two kids. That doesn't justify the cruelty, but it at least makes it understandable why they might have somewhat resented Harry and his parents.

Petunia was probably 23-24 when her sister Lily 20-21 died, and that's young enough that I can see her starting to regret the way she called her sister a freak for having magic. One important thing to remember is that Harry really could have been dumped off at an orphanage if the Dursley's wanted him, but something made them keep him.

At the very least they should explore Dudley's opinion on Harry changing by the end of the series, where he likes and respects Harry

It’s strongly implied through the “remember my last” howler that Dumbledore did something manipulative that forced Petunia to keep him. They were set to kick him out of the house and Dumbledore immediately stops them. We never learn what he did, but he clearly did something that had an impact on Petunia

I thought it was that there's some kind of charm on Privet Drive, so Harry is safest there from Voldemort, which means Petunia could have prevented Vernon from kicking Harry out as a protective act for Harry, knowing he's safest there, or maybe Dumbledore really did threaten her, I don't know. Petunia knows a little bit about the magical world, and I think she knows Voldemort is a serious threat, so either Dumbledore threatened to do something even more heinous than Voldemort would do to the Dursleys, if he found them; or Petunia wants Harry to stay there because she cares about him enough to risk Voldemort coming for them. Could be.

              > I thought it was that there's some kind of charm on Privet Drive, so Harry is safest there from Voldemort
That’s why Dumbledore is invested in keeping Harry there. I also don’t think Petunia outright hates Harry to the extent that she wants him dead, but that’s a far cry from loving him. When Vernon is attempting to kick him out and Petunia basically allows it to happen before Dumbledore puts her in line, she knows Voldemort is gone and probably doesn’t think the charm is as necessary as Dumbledore makes it out to be, he didn’t tell anyone else that he suspected Voldemort to return one day

Kind of like how Snape treats Harry though. He obviously doesn't love Harry, or even like him at all, but he cares about him enough to risk his life, because he cared about Lily.

                Anonymous

Yeah, that’s about right. Although I think with Snape, he really does want to hate Harry, and he sees so much of James in him that it’s irreconcilable for him. But he also carries the guilt of having been indirectly responsible for Voldemort killing Lily in the first place and views protecting Harry as an act of redemption.

            Anonymous

            There was nothing manipulative.

            -your sister died
            -Harry survived
-Voldemort, the evil wizard who killed her, is defeated, but his followers are still around and might go after him.
-Lily cast a spell to protect Harry and only works if he lives with a blood relative, you all are safe too.

Petunia knew magic was real and that Voldermort was dangerous. She was told the truth and she believed it.

              >-Lily cast a spell to protect Harry and only works if he lives with a blood relative, you all are safe too.
thats honestly a great plot device. both makes sure harry survives and that the neglectful family is tied to him, lest they be their own undoing. it also makes me think that yes, petunia was probably the most aware of their situation, since wizards frequently speak about how voldemort wiped out entire families, implying petunia's family would be hunted

              Anonymous

Also, Petunia had sent a letter to Dumbledore when she was a child asking to be let into Hogwarts like her sister, and Dumbledore had written back explaining it wasn't possible. Her hatred of Lily started soon after that out of envy.

Muggle born, but only Petunia was an actual muggle. Lily had magic, so she was allowed in. Petunia was just jealous she wasn't special.

          >but something made them keep him.
Dumbledore's letter said that they needed to keep him otherwise he was in danger. Considering Lily and James were just killed, it makes all sense that Petunia didn't want to be responsible for her nephew's death. Dumbledore reminds Harry this when he says they hated him: "she took you in". Petunia could have said she didn't believe in magic, that she didn't mind Harry, or that Voldemort was already dead, so why would she care? She did care.

          >At the very least they should explore Dudley's opinion on Harry changing by the end of the series, where he likes and respects Harry

I think the Petunia should remain a spiteful, hateful b***h. But Vernan and especially Dudley should grow an attachment towards him. They kinda do this in the movies, but they should put a bit more into the TV series.

Reminder that Vernon was always the villain who hated Harry the most. You can even see he's a born c**t based on how his sister that shows up is one too, before she gets Dobson'd by Dobby.

It makes metanarrative sense too, because Rowling has a hysterical fixation on male abusers, being a beaten housewife herself. It's why she's so aggressively anti-troony; she doesn't hate trannies on principle just because they're trannies, she hates them because they're men.

See these deleted scenes, straight from the book:

The more I've thought about it I've realised that trying to add depth to the Dursleys would actually make them more evil. They're fairy tale villains, it's just their nature to be evil. Like you can't hate a lion for eating a zebra, it's just in its nature. If you try to give them a conscience you're basically saying they're capable of self reflection and yet still choose to treat Harry like shit, which is way worse I would argue. Also it wouldn't really make sense to examine the Dursleys in more detail without also examining the affect of their abuse on Harry's psyche as well. In reality, the end result of all the Dursley's abuse would probably be Harry walking into potions class with an AR-15, and that just doesn't really fit the energy of the series.

        Anonymous

They already have enough depth. Petunia's actions are driven by pure jealousy because she wasn't special like Lily and she's in denial about that resentment. She hated magic because she couldn't have magic. After that, she chose a man who was an ultra normie to pretend she never wanted anything magical. We found out in final book that she shares this with Snape: they hate Harry because he represents something they never could have and their own actions kept them apart from it. Snape chose the Dark Arts and that eventually pushed Lily away; Petunia could have chosen to stay with her sister and still be part of the Magical World like Hermione's parents or Lupin's mother.

Dudley grew up though and recognized the spoiled bully he had been. I like that bit from Dumbledore in the sixth book when he admonishes the Dursleys for not doing as he asked and treating Harry as part of the family, but as some burden they kept in a closet, but then adds that he's glad Harry was at least spared the appalling damage they inflicted on their actual son, and Vernon and Petunia are completely baffled and don't know what he means.

        >They're fairy tale villains
In the first few books yes but from PoA onwards they start to feel more like real people albeit very unpleasant ones. Disappointing that the movies cut Harry's parting with them at the start of Deathly Hallows. It's a very poignant moment and I think it showed a lot of maturity from Harry. Despite everything they were still his family and he wanted them to be safe.

They should adapt Vernon meeting Harry's parents for the first time:
      >She confessed the truth during a tear-stained date, in Vernon’s dark car as they sat overlooking the chip shop where Vernon had just bought them a post-cinema snack. Vernon, as Petunia had expected, was deeply shocked; however, he told Petunia solemnly that he would never hold it against her that she had a freak for a sister, and Petunia threw herself upon him in such violent gratitude that he dropped his battered sausage.

      >The first meeting between Lily, her boyfriend James Potter, and the engaged couple, went badly, and the relationship nose-dived from there. James was amused by Vernon, and made the mistake of showing it. Vernon tried to patronise James, asking what car he drove. James described his racing broom. Vernon supposed out loud that wizards had to live on unemployment benefit. James explained about Gringotts, and the fortune his parents had saved there, in solid gold. Vernon could not tell whether he was being made fun of or not, and grew angry. He threw hot soup in James' face, but James handily deflected it with a trusty "expelliarmus." The evening ended with Vernon and Petunia storming out of the restaurant, while Lily burst into tears and James (a little ashamed of himself) promised to make things up with Vernon at the earliest opportunity.

It's just like how Harry's patronus was a stag even before he knew that his dad's animagus form was a stag.

They didn't buy everything. They just bought a bit of every item on the menu.

After the books, Petunia sent Harry the blanket they found him with when he was a baby, which she saved for whatever reason. Probably because it was something that reminded her of her own dead sister. Harry and Dudley are in speaking terms too. I'd say they reconciled as much as it's possible.

Despite all the animosity between each other, Lily and James went to Petunia and Vernon's wedding and Petunia kept sending the Potter Christmas gifts. Even Vernon remembered they had a nephew called Harry.

Dudley somewhat reconciles with Harry after Harry saved him from the Dementors

I remember when she made a specific point that Vernon watches Top Gear to emphasize how evil of a thing to do that is.

Sunday is not the rest day. The real rest day is Saturday ie Sabbath.

The Bible never mentioned that it should be officially Sunday. Jesus rose from the dead after Sabbath. Which implies the signifance of keeping it holy.
