The point is that these are stories happening within a living world. It stops being just about Finn specifically pretty early on, a lot of characters get individual episodes and storylines, and there's a bunch of lore about the past and future of the world. The finale wraps up that specific story for those specific characters, but there's always room for sequels because the world still exists, there are still characters and settings that can be explored further.

Yeah, pretty much. It's important to understand the context of who Simon is, his current state of mind, and just generally what the frick is going on. You could probably get by with an episode guide or something, but I despise that shit. No half measures. Either watch the show or don't.
Yeah you should watch AT first, there are a lot of references to earlier episodes and characters. Simon as a character is the end result of a multi season arc, even his real name and appearance were a huge reveal at the time.
I'll tell you one thing you won't like his ass if you watch the original show and see how much more fun he was when he was actually a magic cartoon character and not some "hekkin deep last of them fanfiction" character.
They did Cake becoming Cake very well, I thought for sure they’d be hacks. And to be fair, they still are. However the last episode is indicative of bad dialogue crafting, and it has this disjointedness to it, which is also present in remnants in each of the previous episodes. I like the one where finn goes to another realm where tree trunks is an ant eater and she makes apricot pies, and marceline is a leaf. I usually hate these types of "stories" but this one is an exception because it had soul. I can't explain why it has soul, I was just trying to explain which episode I was talking about. That animation was so great.

Finn's dealing with a depression of his own following the death of his better half. I get how that can feel icky, but when you really think about it, Adventure Time is itself a pretty bleak show. The writers and artists are just able to find the silliness within the barren, post-apocalyptic wasteland of Ooo.

I've only seen Together Again once, back when it first premiered. Is it just that one exchange that Cinemaphile chooses to obsess over? Or did the special directly state that Finn never found "true happiness" for the decades and decades he lived without Jake? From what I remember, I think Finn's life should still be open-ended enough to allow for him to grow and live a fulfilling life, with the desire to reunite with Jake in the afterlife simply sitting at the back of his mind. Nothing to retcon really.
The problem is they try to make it open-ended but it just end up making it seem like Finn had a depressing life after Jake died and just aimlessly played hero until he died or something since they refuse to give any detail or even just say "yeah I had a lot of adventures and made many friends". The movie is too laser-focused on Finn and Jake and I get the movie is about them but it makes Finn look like a loser obsessed with Jake, Jake died long ago so it doesn't affect him as much.

But Finn is a loser that's obsessed with Jake. After Jake's death he's constantly trying to fill the void, first we see him going on adventures with Jake's granddaughter, and recently again going on adventures with T.V. Finn literally could never move on after Jake died, and he copes by adventuring with anyone that resembles Jake.
I mean its obvious Finn actually does care for Simon, when he finds out about his past in season 3 he starts gradually befriending him and being nice to him, they start to hang out more and Finn calls him Simon sometimes instead of Ice King. Hell in that one episode were Finn gets those magic eyes we learn that how he sees Ice King is as Simon and he says its hard not to see him as Simon.
Sure a big reason for Finn caring is that he learned that his nemesis is actually another human just like him and that he's not the only one but its also because he knows Ice King was once a good person and the guy he beats up every day isn't evil, just a mentally deranged and lonely man who has forgotten who he was.
Still I think pre Jake's death Finn would've given better advice or even Jake himself.

I think it might've had something to do when the series started to get more attention for it's experimental episodes, like off the top of my head the season was when stuff like the AV Club started treating the series as something other than light entertainment and into it's 'The Simpsons for Millennials' phase.

The theme of everything stays of the series connects with so many other places of the show, for many, AT has too many disnconnected stories and plot lines, but things like this show me there's more thought put into it that most of us reallize
I was worried at first, but Sean Rohani did great as Prismo. He came pretty close to matching Kumail's portrayal, and even if there were times when the character's voice felt off, you could dismiss that as his post-Jake depression hitting him like a truck. Still fricked up what happened behind the scenes, but I think everybody made it work surprisingly well.
If anything, I just felt like Prismo's design didn't look as flat/stretched/stylized as before. THAT'S what irked me a bit.

This, my favorite trope is when a character who went through development sticks around and helps someone going through a similar struggle. Would've been cool if we saw Marceline supporting another character through their grieving process, or becoming a mentor figure for a child in need of a positive role model. Hell even in this spin off there could've been one scene of her consoling Finn since he's coping with losing the most important individual in his life for the first time.
If you like steven universe or rebecca sugar, you should eat a bullet this instant. Having her involved with adventure time was a mistake and now her and the goonsquad are back again to make F&C a melodrama about relationships. I just want cool adventures... I don't need subtext! Yes, that happened even back in season 2. They always liked their open endings.
I mean, the two finales they had already did a pretty good job of wrapping things up. But they left Simon open. So now Fionna and Cake is happening. Fionna and Cake will probably resolve Simon, but leave a thread dangling for Marshall Lee or something.
The point is that these are stories happening within a living world. It stops being just about Finn specifically pretty early on, a lot of characters get individual episodes and storylines, and there's a bunch of lore about the past and future of the world. The finale wraps up that specific story for those specific characters, but there's always room for sequels because the world still exists, there are still characters and settings that can be explored further.
I was speaking more generally, but yeah, there's a lot of wiggle room in Adventure Time specifically.

Yeah you should watch AT first, there are a lot of references to earlier episodes and characters. Simon as a character is the end result of a multi season arc, even his real name and appearance were a huge reveal at the time.

Finn's dealing with a depression of his own following the death of his better half. I get how that can feel icky, but when you really think about it, Adventure Time is itself a pretty bleak show. The writers and artists are just able to find the silliness within the barren, post-apocalyptic wasteland of Ooo.

I've only seen Together Again once, back when it first premiered. Is it just that one exchange that Cinemaphile chooses to obsess over? Or did the special directly state that Finn never found "true happiness" for the decades and decades he lived without Jake? From what I remember, I think Finn's life should still be open-ended enough to allow for him to grow and live a fulfilling life, with the desire to reunite with Jake in the afterlife simply sitting at the back of his mind. Nothing to retcon really.
The problem is they try to make it open-ended but it just end up making it seem like Finn had a depressing life after Jake died and just aimlessly played hero until he died or something since they refuse to give any detail or even just say "yeah I had a lot of adventures and made many friends". The movie is too laser-focused on Finn and Jake and I get the movie is about them but it makes Finn look like a loser obsessed with Jake, Jake died long ago so it doesn't affect him as much.

I mean its obvious Finn actually does care for Simon, when he finds out about his past in season 3 he starts gradually befriending him and being nice to him, they start to hang out more and Finn calls him Simon sometimes instead of Ice King. Hell in that one episode were Finn gets those magic eyes we learn that how he sees Ice King is as Simon and he says its hard not to see him as Simon.
Sure a big reason for Finn caring is that he learned that his nemesis is actually another human just like him and that he's not the only one but its also because he knows Ice King was once a good person and the guy he beats up every day isn't evil, just a mentally deranged and lonely man who has forgotten who he was.
Still I think pre Jake's death Finn would've given better advice or even Jake himself.
It also helps that Simon is close to Marceline, who's a close friend of Finn herself.

Did YOU watch it? The life that Baby Finn was thrown into is fricking terrifying through a more realistic lens. There's danger and peril everywhere you turn, wizards and magic men who can disfigure you just to get a laugh, no other humans for miles, and nuclear weapon debris throughout the land. Finn only survived because he was taken in by mutant talking dogs led by a patriarch who values tough love. Adult Finn only knowing questing and dungeon-crawling makes sense.
Other anon forgot to mention that Fionna & Cake is also a direct sequel to the original series. It's written almost exclusively for fans familiar with the main cast's backstories.

The theme of everything stays of the series connects with so many other places of the show, for many, AT has too many disnconnected stories and plot lines, but things like this show me there's more thought put into it that most of us reallize
I would not have remembered that if I didn't rewatch everything.
I was worried at first, but Sean Rohani did great as Prismo. He came pretty close to matching Kumail's portrayal, and even if there were times when the character's voice felt off, you could dismiss that as his post-Jake depression hitting him like a truck. Still fricked up what happened behind the scenes, but I think everybody made it work surprisingly well.
If anything, I just felt like Prismo's design didn't look as flat/stretched/stylized as before. THAT'S what irked me a bit.

And just because someone's character arc was finished, Marceline wasn't, it doesn't mean that said character should stop existing. This, my favorite trope is when a character who went through development sticks around and helps someone going through a similar struggle. Would've been cool if we saw Marceline supporting another character through their grieving process, or becoming a mentor figure for a child in need of a positive role model. Hell even in this spin off there could've been one scene of her consoling Finn since he's coping with losing the most important individual in his life for the first time.
