For a series people praise for continuity and the way the tone gears itself through Finn's maturation, the random spike towards humourless grimdark everything played straight before pivoting back to Marceline pranking the lads again, is a total affront to both concepts

Wasn't this obvious from the trailer? Fionna is working at a dead-end job in a normal city and is desperate for any kind of adventure or excitement. They're going to be playing with the "fanfiction as wish fulfilment" idea and combine it with multiverse stuff to have her suddenly stumble onto something (probably running into Simon who's dimension hopping to find Betty) and jump at the chance to live out her fantasies. They literally showed off a magical girl style character that will likely be her inspiration. "Wow, Cake, I wish my life were as exciting as [insert character name here]..." They literally had an episode about this concept in the original series.
Of course they're going to start with a bait and switch like they did in Together Again to establish the setting and juxtapose it with the original series.

Then it could go different ways, like Fionna coming to Ooo and interacting with those characters, or somehow her normal world being changed to be more like Ooo. maybe somewhere in the middle, as it'd be weird if Cake was a normal cat for the whole thing.
I don't like it when dimension hoppers interact with "mundane" worlds in comics and cartoons, because it implies it's possible to escape our own horrific universe.
