Adventure Time in its early days was fricking massive. Now it's decently popular, but nowhere near its old popularity and prestige. There's a reason why Adventure Time isn't looked back on fondly by most people, and it's 1/10th as popular as it used to be. I feel like if they do a season 2 instead of just doing a different spin-off series, then the season 2 will probably be about a divergent Fionna and Cake, some equivalent to Farmworld, because F&C are now "canon" and will be subject to the same multiversality that the regular Finn-Ooo is.
Why did they change Fionna's style so hard? Her main appeal was her cuteness, she was mostly designed by Nat to capture a distinct feminine cuteness. The new version makes her more masculine. And it's not the switch from a skirt to shorts, although that change is undeniably disappointing. The entire way she's illustrated has shifted. Originally she had these smooth, curvaceous lines, delicate poses, and dainty features that radiated a graceful cuteness. In the new rendition, she's drawn way stiffer, more blocky and blob-like at the same time, she doesn't flow like water anymore. The original Fionna was an alternate depiction of the character created by Nat, the new rendition is like Finn got hit with a gender swap ray. Fionna is supped to have a different vibe from Finn, just look at their hats. Finn's a bear boy and Fionna's a bunny girl, their different animal hats should be a significant hint toward that.

I didn't even like Season 1. They killed off the best characters, Jake and Ice King, Fionna's love interests were turned into obnoxious homosexuals, they turned Simon into a pussy, too much focus on Betty, and the ending message of "at least we'll die as ourselves" was just plain fricking dumb. That's not even their original forms, they were SUPPOSED to be more magical, it feels more natural to them, and things didn't stay the same anyway, nobody is complaining that Cake is a magic stretchy talking cat now instead of an ordinary one.
I feel like the show would've been better if it ended on a cliffhanger for a second season instead of that tumblrfest of a finale. It would've been nice to have Fiona and Cake become way more at odds with each in the later episodes of the first season, with Cake wanting them to be their fantasy versions no matter what and Fiona becoming uncertain if she really wants to or not, which ends up with both of them fighting over returning to their regular lives or not. Cake could've been a far more interesting character in my opinion, since she has a lot more at stake than Fiona if she turned back to their modern au selves, being a house pet and all.

No, you don't, but understand that the second episode will be mostly stuff you're going to have to just accept because it's all going to be new to you just like the first episode was, and the show is expecting you to politely basedface at a bunch of stuff that you won't have investment in, and like 12% of the rest of the show is going to be surface level and you might not fully understand who is doing what why, but they do a good job of holding your hand and telling you "oh this person? Who's that?" and then a character tells you. Having a fish-out-of-water protagonist like Fionna does help in that regard because she can ask questions most of the audience would know, and it doesn't feel like a waste of time because both sides of those interactions are used for character development. They don't have someone just look into camera and go "Golb is the ultimate destruction of everything, the cosmic concept of annihilation", they leave it healthy and fresh enough that you can get the vibe without having to watch ten seasons of Adventure Time.
I was rewatching the show concurrently with F&C's rollout and I had a lot of fun seeing stuff I watched one day be referenced in the other show the next day

That might actually be a great way to bring back OG Marcy and put genuinely interesting strain on her relationship with PB rather than being a demure lapdog. Marceline would react very strongly to Lemongrab, even if her immediate impulse would be to prank the shit outta him cause he's just that uptight. The pranks could be part of the resolution too, bringing out memories of when PB was 13 and pranking Lemongrab with Finn, and could catalyse a push towards PB acting more fun-loving and sweet like in the first few seasons. Main thing would just be to make sure Lemongrab has agency and doesn't just get fricked over again - Marcy sympathising with him and raising hell against PB for her callous treatment of him (and in a way externalising her anger with herself for falling for someone just like her dad) would probably be enough to get him into a position of agency in the story.
Lemongrab could unfrick the very things that made Bubbline so fricked and bring it back to the state that made people actually like it as a ship. How can one yellow autismo be this based?
