You know the mouse is desperate when they bring back Figment in modern media. We haven't reached the very bottom yet, which would be making Oswald relevant, but we're getting there.

8 hour lines for popcorn buckets will do that.

I think they are slowly propping him up as a potential new mascot since Mickey just isn’t well liked by younger audiences anymore. Mainly due to his safe and sterile nature.

It’s odd though, if they wanted a character with a personality to be the brand figure. They should’ve just made it Donald. Donald Duck is viewed as the embodiment of Disney in European countries since his comics are iconic.

Make no mistake, Mickey will always be the mascot and figurehead character, even if he does nothing besides look cute for merch. Donald will always be the people’s choice and second official.
But there is a possibility Figment is being positioned and considered as the parks mascot and used far more since there’s more you can do with him, he doesn’t have the negative stigma of Mickey or his universe and his copyright is secured for at least 50 more years, but that depends on how those outside his home market react

        >since Mickey just isn’t well liked by younger audiences anymore
That's complete bullshit seeing how the Paul Rudish cartoons had been going on for over a decade and they're gearing up to reboot MMC again.

Figmentmania came out of nowhere, of course they'd bring him back in modern media when he's a proven seller
And don't worry, Disney is busy bringing both back to relevency

        >figmentmania came out of nowhere,
It was always a thing in the themepark autist circles, since Figment came from a time before the Mouse's debauched madness became what it was today. When they started removing Figment from the park, there were people that were really upset over it and demanded them bring him back in any form.

It also helped that Figment was a merch juggernaut even back then and that even Eisner thought the 1999 version was so shit that the current quickfix was fasttracked into development once he got off.

            >went to epcot for the first time in Thanksgiving 2004
            >didn't go on Journey into Imagination but saw the character enough to find him charming
            >had I did, my first experience would've been the farting CGI Figment

Dodged a bullet, but I kind of regret not getting, at least, something Figment related. I wish they'd just resort the ride to its former glory. That should've been a higher priority than renovating Splash Mountan.

There was always a core autist circle, sure, but it never bleed out the way it does now. And for the past 20 years they weren't big, they only barely managed to get a ride patching because the revamp was so poorly received and they still tried replacing him a second time because the fandom wasn't that big. They sold very limited amount of merch but there's was nothing like 8 hours for a bucket or 5 hours to take a selfie with a costumed character until the last few years.
Something just happened in the early 2020s that caused this

The Marvel comic and YouTubers hyping up the original ride really helped.

            COVID.
            >You can't just blame everythi-
100% a huge chunk of society got brain damage in that period, because everything seemed to frick up even a year after it was called off.

I thought little golden books were supposed to be held to some sort of classic standard.

Disney's been turning a ton of their park original rides into Little Golden Books lately, not to mention Little Golden Books in general seem to be turning more into "Let's target manchildren with the loose pretense of nostalgic parents using these books to introduce the character/movie/Funko Pops to their kids" in the last few years.

Why didn’t this get an animation adaptation?

Because according to DTVA people that worked on that promising looking Haunted Mansion miniseries pitch, Disney executives think that theme park IP shouldn't be wasted on animation. Gotta keep trying to get that Pirates lightning to strike a second time after all.

didnt the US parks try to bring over that tokyo teddy bear at one time?
how come the bear didn't stick and is the dragon popular over in tokyo as well?

Duffy the Disney Bear was a failed US product in the first place. Nobody in America really cared about a generic teddy bear with Hidden Mickeys in his face and paws, but Japan's got more obsessed Disney Adults then America on top of their obsession with all things cute.
Figment's an Epcot exclusive and doesn't exist in Tokyo but Japanese Disney fans that have made it over here seem to like him.
