So is this really going to be a musical..?

Yes, and Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn will be the lead character.

Not confirmed yet but that’s the rumor
And this teaser trailer certainly suggests that rumor is true: https://youtu.be/7Zgttt8Q2Rw [Open]
Also, Joker is largely based on Taxi Driver. After Taxi Driver, Scorsese’s next film was New York, New York an old fashioned movie musical
      https://youtu.be/ge7NiJuSpac
the theme from New York New York became a standard for Frank Sinatra. https://youtu.be/TK0Vdb1RUCk
The first Joker had multiple Frank Sinatra songs on its soundtrack, and ends with Joker singing “That’s Life.” https://youtu.be/HUgZ7kztPBs
Lady Gaga has made multiple albums of traditional vocal jazz, Frank Sinatra type songs, duets with Tony Bennett
so the answer is DEFINITELY yes

If this does well, does that mean Joker 3 will be a story involving Batman based on Raging Bull?

Honestly, making the budget 150 million seems like a dumb idea.

They should have not made this a musical and not hire someone expensive like Lady Gaga.

Like, you could do a Harley/Joker movie in Arkham and not have it cost so much money.

Dont musicals tend to flop in general? I remember back in middle school when I went to see Sweeney Todd and like half of the audience left when they started singing

It kinda depends. Les Mis, A Star Is Born and La La Land did well, In the Heights and the remake of West Side Story didn’t, although I thought it was pretty good just for the production values. The main leads kinda failed to have proper chemistry.

Established brands and well known casts vs unknown casts with new IP and remake nobody was really clamouring for (and to be fair it was a pure vanity project for Spielberg, he has loved the stage version since he was a kid, iirc)

      >half of the audience left when they started singing
does that really happen? I have never seen people leaving (except for one or two people) even when the people is terrible, and one time I went ot see this terrible movie with Robert DeNiro that literally made everyone laugh when the credits started rolling because of how utterly boring it was.

Sweeney Todd was a bit of a bait and switch, it wasn't marketed as a musical at all

      >I, a child, went to see an R-rated movie and noticed that half of the audience left the theater in the first thirty seconds after realizing the musical they paid to see would have singing
At least try to make the story sound plausible.

In the case of Sweeney Todd I think marketing fricked up. People just saw Johnny Depp and some bloody text and obviously assumed it was a slasher or some shit.

I can imagine. What more could they do with the character now, especially with a female counterpart? The thing that made Joker so great was that it was the self-contained story of a very lonely and dysfunctional man. Give him his fall, freedom and a friend and he's not a compelling character anymore.

The only way this could possibly be good is if the premise is Joker 2 is a fantastical retelling of the events of Joker, romanticized and totally missing the point. A spoof on how the human race (particularly the corporate end) tends to embellish things it doesn't understand. Lady Gaga being the Joker's love interest should be tongue-in-cheek and pull some stupid, tone-deaf "I can fix him!" bullshit normalgays actually believe.

That would be a REALLY ballsy move. The movie would obviously have to have new plot points, but to have the story of Joke 1 told that way from Harley’s point of view would be very interesting. That said, I still don’t think people would get it and would absolutely have the biggest bad faith take of assuming the movie was trying to justify Arthur’s actions rather than see that Harley is wrong.

The only reason people like joker as much as they did was because it was removed as far removed from capeshit as possible and reminded people when we used to have real movie.

A musical is also pretty far removed from capeshit
