That Zaku looks like a space marine and the Gundam looks moronic.
100% the Yamane concept art looked different and this is the western team own interpretation of it.

The Gundam doesn't look good in this half-assed Warhammer aesthetic. They needed to either go all in like the Zaku or or actually have a completely designer work on it like how they had different designers for each faction in 00, IBO, and WFM

        Anonymous

Here's how you fix that Gundam design
        >The biggest complaint I have for this design is it doesn't know whether to commit to hard angles or curved lines aesthetically. The lower legs are the worst at this, the bottom half being curved while the top is super angular. Go full angular to counter Zeon's curved aesthetic.
        >Bring the brow above the eyes down some more, actually make the eyes look menacing instead of derpy
        >Either make the v-fin larger OR go full Ez8 with the head design
        >Might just be the angle of the image, but the shoulders look too small. Maybe make them like 20% bigger and lets see how they go from there
        >The three beam saber rack on the back is dumb as shit, move the Beam Saber mounts to the side skirts
        >On the topic of the skirt, the crotch and waist area feels way too small.
        >The shield sucks, start over or just rip one from another OYW show
        >Get rid of the faux toe on the feet

On another note I actually really like this White/Gray/Red look for the Gundam. Gives me vibes of that one White Prototype Gundam. The fact it has what looks like the Guncannon's beam rifle makes me think this is a spare suit cobbled together from leftover Project V stuff.

Thunderbolt. Origin. Zeta Define. 0083 Rebellion.... This just joins them as yet another retelling/alternate take on original events. Probably will be better than ZD at least.

no they made it for the existing sub-section of existing Gundam gays that are 40K/"mecha must be gritty greebled" stock. So instead of let's try to get peeps who normally don't like Gundam at all to let's target a specific piece of the pie in existing Gundam fandom.

        Anonymous

Those "fans" just endlessly rewatch MS Team or participate in Gundam discourse entirely by coasting off that one Gundam OVA episode they caught on Toonami decades ago. Or worse a homosexual who saw a clip on youtube and labels that emotion as the only "real" gundam.

Pretty sure the demographic of 40k is more than just American and overlaps greatly with those who don't likeNewtype/Jedi stuff in Gundam at all.

Zaku looks okay I guess. Just looks like the Zaku but overly designed with too many greebles thinking that makes it look "futuristic".
Gundam looks absolutely absurd though. It looks like one of those knock off robot toys you'd see at a mexican 99 cent store in the ghettos.

I can't wait to see how much of a shit show this will be. It's going to obviously tank, and after shooting themselves in the foot, Bandai is once again going to go "SEE? The West doesn't like Gundam" and neglect everyone outside of Japan for Gundam content.

  12. 8 months ago

The Gundam's proportions and the stuff on its shoulders make it look like it was designed as the base of a later Full Armor form. Or at least something along the lines of Striker Packs.

    Kolchak

    >Is this the Gundam from the White Base?

...No. Why even posit such an idea? We can see the model number. Much like the aborted Breaker comic, I'm not sure who this is for. Setting it in 0079 seems like a good way to ward off normies and attract old fans, but the staff and art direction aren't really gonna put asses in seats

Why do I feel like it's a G-saviour situation again when the CGI models are offmodel compared to the concept art?
But G-saviour was made in the late 90s and was by a small canadian studio, they have zero excuses here.

      Anonymous

Why do people keep saying it was a Canadian movie? It wasn't. Polestar was based out of California as was Digital Muse. The only thing that happened in Canada was the filming. That doesn't make it a Canadian movie

I swear someone provided some input on this, but the CG models in G-Saviour, I don't think were supposed to be seen in turnarounds like how they are in this book. You can't really tell the proportions seem off compared to the lineart when in motion, also I think there was just a disconnect with the CG art team when it came to rendering what was drawn on paper.

        Anonymous

CG models in G-saviour looks a bit strange when still but pretty good in motion / from certain angles. Hell this was 1999 too.

Nah its more of a euro look than anything since euro mecha designs usually have horrible proportions like this. The only blatantly American mecha thing is the head taking the EZ-8 design and tweaking it further because it looked like a football helmet a little.

if there's an explanation about "we just mashed the bottom of a salamis onto a handle" or whatever so there's a good reason the shield looks like a shitty kitbash like Eva's "it's literally just the bottom of a shuttle" then I'll accept that shield, otherwise frick that bullshit up its stupid ass

I don't mind the zaku so much but that gundam is atrocious.

And why does every fricking OYW OVA always have to introduce YET ANOTHER gundam prototype that exists in parallel with amuro ray's Gundam?

What's the point in doing all these grunt stories if they're always going to end up getting a gundam by the end? I'd rather see a bunch of MS pilots being forced to make the best of their GMs. Even 08th MS had a whole team of ground gundams and eventually EZ8.

Actually now that I think of it, that's probably the main reason why I like Zeon so much. Other than the wacky new mobile armor of the week they get for the Gundam to beat up they really do just make do with mass-production suits like zaku, gouf, dom, etc.

I'd chalk it up to corporate meddling. It's like with Star Wars, and how every movie/show/game HAS to have a wookie or a desert world, because when the creators pitch their ideas to the out of touch corps, they go "well where's [insert thoroughly beaten dead horse here]??"
I do wish we'd get more GMs rather than Gundams but what can we do. I love the GM design but Zeon really is the only way to thrive if you're a gruntgay like me.

        Anonymous

This is why Last Jedi is the best, since it at least TRIED doing new things, like the salty desert

          Anonymous

I kind of rolled my eyes at it thinking, "of course we're in ANOTHER desert planet out of the infinite number of planets they could've chosen", but at least they did try to spin it in a new way. All shitposting about the new trilogy aside, I do appreciate when they tried to finally work outside the box, just a shame that that it was too late by then, along with them dropping the ball hard on certain things.

And frick the casino arc. The entire thing felt absolutely pointless, like filler episodes in a blockbuster movie.

I really like the backpack gear for this Gundam. The beam rifle is also an interesting interpretation. The proportions for the suit seem way off though and I'm not feeling the face. The shield is also just bad.
Honestly the Zaku isn't too bad. The head seems off and I'm not sure what it is. The size, maybe. And the snout seems to protrude too far.
The Gundam seems like something that could look good with a redesign for a gunpla down the line by someone else.
