It fits better with the down to earth nature of his character as well as with the rest of the autobots, even in english (Bumblebee, Jazz, Hound). Optimus Prime sounds more like a rank than a name.
Convoy was treated as a title too, but it stopped after Rodimus Convoy. In truth, its because Japanese kids in the 80s had an easier time saying Convoy, Optimus Prime is hard to pronounce for those who aren't familiar with English words.
Oh, didn't know that - only vaguely familiar with JP Transformer stuff. Yeah that probably is the reason, Optimus Prime would also be a hell of a lot of characters to write out in katakana.
In the G1 dub they compensate for "Convoy" being shorter by having characters add in his rank of commander so like Ironhide would say "Convoy Shireikan" or sometimes just "Shireikan."

Why did the stop calling him Convoy? Was it because Japanese kids are more used to saying English words these days? I notice he's only called Convoy when referring to the original 1984 Prime.
Don't know why they choose to use Optimus Prime for their 2007 movie dub but it stuck with how much of the later media were related to the live action movie. Maybe because it's 4 syllables so it would be easier to match lip movements if they kept the Western name.

i'm more of a lambor (g2) kind of guy
There is no G2 in Japanese canon.
Yes there is
Also carrobot Black Convoy is G2.
Always thought Convoy was a cooler name.

I mean, Prime is a title.
Convoy doesn't really sound like a name to me, but that's probably rather subjective.

its because Battle Convoy and Optimus Prime are now two different characters, although you can still call g1 Optimus Convoy.
Reminds me that I gotta pick up some Daiclone figures the next time I'm at my local import shop
