You're fricked, Force Awakens was just "ooh what might happen next! just you wait!" with a shit ton of nostalgia bait and the mere fact that it's "the return of star wars and it's new!" made it an instant guaranteed win, you literally could not have fricked that up as long as it wasn't awfully shot/acted/other technical shit.

The movie looked fine, and everyone was realtively competent in their performances. Considering the main character pair was a black guy and a chick, I'm sure many people were willing to look past any speed bumps. Shit like BB8 and all the new additions like that helped distract people. It was pretty genius as aa product, designed to sell perfectly and it sure did. Rian felt like destroying the series instead of continuing the free money printer I guess.

It was literally a shittier version of A New Hope made for zoomers... and even they didn't like it. Take your contrarian bullshit back to your homesite anon.

That's what I'm saying you moron, it was nothing but nostalgia bait with shit like black guy + woman combo and emo young villain to bait the zoomers in. But there wasn't anything egregious like there was in the prequels (Jar Jar Binks, Anakin, dumb bullshit like the israelite alien from Episode 1)

Most people who praised The Force Awakens talked about what *could* happen next, not about what actually happened in the movie. Then they got mad at The Last Jedi because it didn't have good answers. But the issue is, there are no good answers. J.J.'s mystery boxes are not about having answers. What's the answer for why Luke isolated himself without telling anyone why, while also leaving a map behind that leads to his hideout? Like it or not, Rian Johnson gave the best answer he could have given. And why does anybody pretend that Rey's mysterious backstory could have been a good idea until The Last Jedi Killed it? Everybody rolled their eyes at the possibility of her being related to Luke or Obi-Wan, and nobody liked her being related to Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker. So The Last Jedi's "you're nothing" was actually an improvement on The Force Awakens. And Snoke... Snoke was a dumb villain and I'm glad The Last Jedi killed him off (or attempted to).

I'm not gonna write a what if script for that shit movie, but yeah it really was about the mystery boxes and that's it, anticipation for what might come next. But shit like just killing off Snoke, the absolute waste of time that was the casino planet, Luke supposedly trying to kill young Kylo, there was just too much moronic bullshit in TLJ that just could've been done better.

I liked the scene where Snoke dies. I don't like how the movie later played his corpse for comedy, though. TLJ is a tonal mess.

Why not actually do something subversive and have Rey completely drop the idea, and when asked about it say her lineage to people who abandoned her doesn’t mean shit?
Rian did the worst of both worlds by having her suddenly care about their identity, while also making the fact they were nobody a big deal in a galaxy where a grand total of two force sensitives had a noteworthy parent

            >Like it or not, Rian Johnson gave the best answer he could have given.
I vehemently disagree. I got suckered in by the TLJ trailer. I was absolutely prepared to see Luke rejecting the Force. TFA had already established that Luke's academy had been destroyed and he had gone into hiding OR gone to seek the first Jedi temple. "Some say he blamed himself" from Han still left wriggle room.
But the reasoning behind Luke rejection we got was so... dissonant that it just doesn't fit with the character. To Rey, he claims he rejects the Jedi because they allowed the rise of Darth Vader right underneath their noses. He could have put this together since Vader revealed his identity to him back in ESB. He also blames Kylo/Ben. He even blows up the hut That already makes him a stuck-up liar. He seemed more noble and honest by the end of ROTJ. He also deliberately adopts a form in the final fight that will rile up his nephew even further while allegedly making an apology. In my opinion should have been that LUKE destroyed the Academy himself while under the influence of Snoke, seeing himself surrounded by the enemy. He would have retreated to shield himself and his friends from it happening ever again, like Marvel handled it in Old Man Logan (not the movie) with Mysterio making Wolverine slaughter the whole team.
Also, the constant need for the movie to ridicule itself, to prevent breathing space for drama, absolutely marred the experience.

TL;DR: This movie could have been saved if its concepts were executed better and it could have helped paper over the damages done by TFA.

              Agree
              >and it could have helped paper over the damages done by TFA
I think most of the damage was already done by TFA, mostly the terrible casting but also the setting of "an even bigger and badderer version of the Empire is inexplicably back and there's another Emperor/ Vader fanboy at the helm"
Honestly, if the Rebellion and Leia were so fricking inept after ROTJ that they let the Empire came back then maybe they deserve to rule the galaxy

It was shit, but it could have been salvaged by someone completely ignoring it by using the empty mystery boxes

It’s ironic that the reason TLJ was so shit is because Rian followed almost every mystery box interpretation to the hilt rather than doing anything original.

The ultimate betrayal. Lured back to the cinema in the hopes of seeing Luke, Leia and Han on another adventure. Instead we got emo Darth Vader, black janitor stormtrooper, Frumpy asian lady, and Mary Sue Palpatine running around.

Should have suspected trash after Abrams ruined Star Trek, but I thought, ‘I’ll give it a try.’

If it were actually kino, it wouldn’t have been “ruined” by Last Jedi, just like how Star Wars 1977 is fine in the wake of Empire or any of the other inferior films to come after it.
No TLJ just made you realize that it was shit.

Force Awakens was a middling movie with lots of spectacle that played it fast and loose with the established setting that could have been saved by the sequel. Said sequel then took the other route and dug the grave so deep they almost came out in China.

Both were shit but TFA is what ruined the OT by undoing everything the heroes accomplished in ROTJ so JJ Abrams could LARP as George Lucas in 1977 and reboot ANH. TLJ just took a big fat shit on the corpse of what JJ already killed.
