I feel like horror films get this wrong every time. Humans are by nature prone to believing irrational bullshit.
A true skeptic might dismiss a claim of paranormal, but a person experiencing what could easily be considered paranormal activity would sooner believe what they're seeing than a more convoluted explanation.

In other words, a person seeing a ghost is going to think it's a ghost. Not try and rationalize it and call it a "thing" or some other bullshit that comes off as someone trying really hard to impress a skeptic. But every film comes to that concluson.
        >ahh I see a ghost but I'm going to call it a thing or something I don't understand because ghosts aren't real ahhhh!

          Anonymous

This. Psychology doesn't operate on rational stimuli. As far as your brain is concerned, supernatural events are possible because you've witnessed them innumerable times in fiction and in dreams.
I often find myself mentally including 'what if I clip into another dimension' and 'what if everyone starts attacking each other' in possible outcomes for normal interactions with spaces or people.

Tbh, it was 80s New York. Jason was probably not even the wildest sight seen on the streets that night.

        Anonymous

As someone who lives 30 minutes from NYC, that's exactly how New Yorkers are. They rudely never look at you in the face, wave or help people without demanding a financial gain. They talk way too fast among them impossible to understand and then they get all pissed off when you didn't understand what they said. They're filthy and always carrying at least one disease on them. All of them think THEIR burrow is the best. All of them are some degree of racist towards AT LEAST 3 different demographics. They think crime, rats and diseased railways are normal.

Jason would fit right in and no one would bat an eye. The only hard to believe part of the NYC section of the movie was that Jason was able to follow the protags as they should've easily been able to disappear in a crowd.

It's sad that movies the past decade or two have been so shitty they make these cheesy movies better then they were. Most of those movies were shit when they came out but are watchable now because they remind us of better times.
Some of those movies I really liked when they came out though like Joy Ride and Ghosts of Mars but the rest were shit.

    Leatherface - Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 (1990)

    Pros!
    > Back to being serious toned after the awful parody nature of 2, good amount of suspense.
    > Probably the 3rd best mask design for Leatherface of the series after 03 & the original, none of the troony implications.
    > Viggo Mortensen is a very good side villain.
    > Ken Foree (dawn of the dead) & the lead actress are solid.
    > Decent to good score & music choices.

    Mixed Elements!
    > The cannibal family is well acted but none of them are as glaringly iconic/memorable as those from 74, 2 or the Sheriff in the 03 timeline.

    Cons!
    > Not enough kills.

FUN FACT: The cast hated working on it since they signed on for a psychological thriller with vague supernatural elements and the studio rewrote it into a slasher film after they got everyone under contract.

FUN FACT: Island of Doctor Moreau had very similar issues, but starred Val Kilmer and Marlon Brando - actual stars. No offense to Julianna Marguiles and her boyfriend from E.R., but they were going anywhere. They got paid to be in a film and frick eachother. Meanwhile, nobody took a crack at Miss Browning? Nah, you know Gabriel Byrne was showing her the ropes. Big white ropes. They shoulda called it Rape Ship.

Makes me wish it had been used for a better movie, it's not like Night of the Demons is the shittiest film ever or something but it's only got maybe 30 minutes worth of actual story and the rest of the runtime is everyone running around the house in a panic and I lose interest after a while.

They pretty much concluded the girls were raped and murdered. It just wasn't broadcasted in the media bc it hurts the tourist economy.

It was a dead give away when they found the girls stuff in a neatly arranged position a month or so later all clean.

Yeah, the russian girl smashed all radios on the ship to avoid the thing from leaving, not just cutting the electricity

            Anonymous

I'm just finishing rewatching it cause I had time to kill and the russian girl says she smashed the transmitters and they actually do use a radio which sutherland shoots because he still wants to salvage a ship full of murderous robots. anyway I think the implication is the virus needs a big transmitter dish type deal not just a radio

movie does kinda suck now that I'm not 12, designs and effects are kinda neato but pretty dumb that they're so worried about a few moronic replicator robots and cyborgs

outsourcing your movies to streaming services doesnt generate dick ass revenue, which is why all production companies are now panicking and making their own seperate in-house streaming services which is more adapt at creating cheaply made streaming shows than movies. Now basically every movie has to make back its budget during the theatre run.
This has completely killed the mid-level budget film productions (aka what every movie ITT basically is), basically movies that were intended to make large parts of their revenue off the aftermarket through word of mouth etc. Every movie now is either high cost blockbuster trash generated from market research or whatever low budget hipster vanity projects they screen at film festivals now.

I watched House of Wax recently and the practical effects at the end were awesome. The only part in the whole film that didn't hold up was CGI they used on a characters face.

Really grim that we won't get films like this again, at least in the foreseeable future.

      Anonymous

I had the same experience rewatching it earlier this year. House of Wax is freaking awesome. The effects at the end represent a pinnacle for the genre and cinema at large. Like Freddy vs. Jason, it's a movie that marks the peak of the American Empire.

        Anonymous

        >Like Freddy vs. Jason, it's a movie that marks the peak of the American Empire.

Literally no body enjoyed this film on release.

          Anonymous

This is nonsense historical revisionism. Freddy vs. Jason was a milestone in cinema, and there hasn't been a single cultural product that has managed to even approach the atmosphere of that magical opening weekend. I'm not saying the culture collapsed overnight, but it was all downhill after Freddy vs. Jason was finally delivered unto its North American audience.

Only thing that bothered me was the dumb choice of settings. There's no way that place would've withstood a single southern summer.

House on haunted hill remake has a severely under-rated script and great actubg by geoffery Rush. Only problem with it is the bad fog monster at the end.

It's kinda silly in practice but come on, it's made of naked people.

Great movie, I must have shown it to at least eight different friends over the years. As predictable as it can be at moments it really hits hard with its initial reveals and the building upon those revelations. Only thing that really pulls you out of it is knock-off Steven Tyler's death, everything else was very theme appropriate and continues to be creepy.
The sequel is a mixture of member berries and new concepts, it doubles down on the found footage aspect, worth a watch if you like the first one just don't expect it to feel as original.
