You wanna show the effects of what confidence does to a person. The dude was genuinely better at his art than Schartzenegger. Better numbers, better body comp, better attitude, in general better liked and a better actor. But he was real self conscious about his partial deafness and so he got real shy and introverted and Schwartzenegger walked in full of swagger and basically bullied him down. When in reality, whatever, he was hard of hearing, he was still quality. It's a real shame and I hope we all take a lesson away from that to not let our own insecurities hamstring us.

They really do need to leave it alone. If they want to treat classic Trek episodes like Shakespeare plays that sounds pretty cringe, but whatever. But this never ending search for Spock is tiresome. It was an iconic character played by one actor. Let it go. Maybe try to be a real writer and create a new character.

SNW could have been good had they toned down the zoomer speak. Star trek has ways been "theatrical" in its dialog and that gives it charm and gravitas. Cut down on the sass and quips too. It's a Navy-like work environment but the crew doesn't act or talk like Naval personnel but more like college room mates.

The local TNG trilogy guild joined with the non genuine lower decks enjoyers aka spammers. They now protest on topic new trek posting with “organic” non /trek/ threads, Velma spam, and creepy posting/ porn spam. The /trek/ general made today got spammed by them till all the people who wanted to talk about Star Trek in it gave up. It was looking like good thread too. People were discussing the movies

If nothing else it showed that new shows could have stuck with the original set and ship designs and have no good reason to make it look needlessly modern for modern audiences. Even Enterprise had that problem making older ships and sets look more advanced than the original series.

People just want a hit of nostalgia but the studio can't help themselves with wanting to update and modernize everything to look more "futuristic" by modern sensibilities.

I always handwaved the look of Star Trek's technology to the fact that they had gone through a nuclear war and basically had to rebuild from the ashes. Scotty being perplexed by the mouse on a computer was a great example of how plausible this explanation is.

if we don't want nostalgia, if we want something new in the same vein, we aren't watching nutrek. PERIOD. we're watching something like guardians of the galaxy or galaxy quest. period. PERIOD.

nutrek has zero appeal to anyone because its not in the same vein as the stuff people liked as kids, its just surface-level referencing shit we liked as kids, and since we're not LITERALLY moronic, we recognize there is nothing good there.

I actually came to appreciate how ENT's polished metal hulls and blue-vented nacelles signify 22nd century ship design, slowly morphing into the stealthy STD-style hulls which themselves gave way to the sleek raygun gothic white of ToS, but it also causes an issue where the Steamrunner and Akira look hopelessly out of date by the 24th century because like Masao Okazaki's hard-on for flat saucer edges, Alex Jaeger really liked making variations of the "metal-colored twin-boom ship," even if one is meant to be hundreds of years more advanced then the other.

Creativity is found in constraints, not absolute freedom. Modern effects and swollen budgets have allowed them to put the bare minimum into writing. Remove those budgets, remove the flashy effects, and you'll see people forced to make stories and characters that inspire the imagination. Now, I'm not saying they have to go full 1970s Doctor Who rubber suits and all. But there is a limit to how flashy effects and sets should be before they promote laziness in writers, actors, and directors. The best trek episodes of old would have worked on an empty stage. Write and direct and act as if those three things are all you have

Star Trek Continues type fan productions are the future. Digital video camera prices keep dropping, Low budget films made today look far better than they did even 10 years ago. I agree with the lowering barriers to entry, so that even bad productions have a shot at getting made.
I blame Bad Robot. The live action Star Trek today is putting most of the money into the hands of the SFX guys. Better writers are called for. There could be a little less pew pew so they can hire a lighting crew once in a while.

Or the writers and actors will make their own studio. It's happened before with United Artists. Charlie Chaplin founded it, but then decades later they sold to MGM. The cycle repeats.

Thanks for telling me about this. Last night I watched the To Boldly Go Two Parter. Hadn't seen this before. I was blown away at the sets, the aesthetics they replicated, even the acting. Uncanny capture of Kirk's spirit. The rest of the cast diverges a little more from their original characterizations but it's A-OK when Kirk the central main character is so beautifully realized once again. And that two parter was top notch writing. It was a beautiful thing. I cried.
