They were already on that train before 2020. By 2017 they shifted over to a format of almost entirely Sequels to features, Live action Remakes of old features, and a Star Wars movie every summer. The current crop of shit is more of a side effect of having to shit out something in a pinch after Star Wars plans were dropped entirely and Mulan was a fricking disaster.

Remakes are also doing some severe long term damage. They keep pushing such low effort affairs and damaging their brands, only to be shocked when normalgays no longer see the company as the height of quality.
I think the FOX buyout may have also been a major contributor to the turmoil they got themselves into, at any other scenario they might have gotten a bit better but the pandemic really screwed up the process combined with the quality of their films declining, now that more and more people are starting to notice these flaws they’d rather spend their money elsewhere until they recreate that old Disney magic that was lost. Time to sell(give freedom) some properties

if F3 flops they probably would chose to shut down completely their animation studio and go exclusively for live action productions.

They could’ve still done the remakes but as 3D animated films instead. That way they’d be able to reuse assets throughout them to cut costs without compromising on the visual quality. That way they could work with lower budgets and see greater returns. They already had the models for the princesses in Wreck it Ralph 2.
