Black Swordsman Arc is good and I actually wish it lasted longer. Just Guts hunting down and kill Apostles
Tower of Conviction is ok in parts but I actually find it ultimately too edgy in the ending and it's basically where the story starts meandering

        Anonymous

Black Swordsman arc sucks. It's just vapid edge, and it doesn't really do anything fun with it. It doesn't have the characters or deeper storytelling that makes Berserk so popular.

You should absolutely read Lost Children. It's a fantastic dark fairytale and I wish we got more stories like it before Guts got his JRPG party.

      Anonymous

It goes from an amazing story that progresses and advances a plot with characters, to becoming a cheesy super hero comic with a seasonal villain that gets defeated by the end.
There's a moment where Miura abandoned the edgy 90s and embraced the new era of Moe anime, and it's obvious because guts starts adopting every child he sees.

The guy should have just ended it back in 2009 but he had a cash cow legacy and making a chapter every 2 years worked. He tried and failed to get another series to work because he's a blatant pedophile who wanted to write about fat fricks traveling with little girls.

Frick yes. All the best parts of Berserk are the parts surrounding the Golden Age. Black Swordsman, Lost Children and Tower of Conviction are 10/10 and the peak of Berserk. You stop reading once they meet Scheirke or when they get on the boat.

Conviction arc is great, great mix of edge and action. When he meets the witch e-girl there's a marked decline, but it's still passable. Ultimately it's all worth a read.
I think the problem with the witch e-girl, pirate ship, and middle eastern turban guy subplot, is when Miura was still alive the releases were so slow and we (or at least I) wanted to get back to Guts hacking up rape demons and surviving within an inch of his life.

He would've wrapped up the story if that were the case. Taking his time shows that he still cared a lot. The art quality didn't suffer at all. Zodd and Skull Knight were the same person, split by a beast of darkness, who might have been Gut's father (at some point there were variations that he fathered Griffith).
Worse comes to worst an AI can cherry pick from fan theories, build out new theoretical endings, with substandard art, and that'll be all we'll ever really have.

The continuation is as good as Muira's Berserk has been for years and years now. Muira himself could never regain the heights the book had in the first 1/4 of the story.

For me, it's that Zodd and Skull Knight represent "bad endings" for Guts, and that none of them are connected by bloodline but they each fit the same role for their respective eras/cycles.
Zodd's very uniquely basic in his design, both visually and in personality. This makes me think he's probably the oldest apostle and has existed for many millennia. Guts if he never progressed beyond his mercenary persona.
Gaiseric/Skull Knight is the previous and most advanced outcome of this role, but has been an abject failure in trying to thwart Void. He's always at least one step behind. Guts if he gives into his vengeance persona.
Guts is the latest and everything points to him somehow breaking the cycle.

no I think thematically it would be moronic if it was ever revealed he had some demonic or magical ancestry or whatever. The only thing known is he was born from his mom's corpse who was hung probably in one of those religious conflicts in one of the countries, maybe Midland or Tudor
there's some implication that he's so powerful because he was born into death under his mother's corpse so he has his foot almost into one of the other plane's of existence and could grow past normal human limitations. Otherwise it's implied he's just a human

The haxx armor was a mistake, as cool as it is. It removes the underdog element from fights, and any downsides it's supposed to have have about as much actual relevance as the kaio-ken.

He was already beating Grunbeld while half-dead, and beat human-form Zodd before even getting the armor. The only challenge now would be the godhand, but they're so out of the ordinary, that he can't even have a regular old-fashioned sword fight with them.

      Anonymous

Griffith has an army of Apostles all a lot stronger than Grenbeld. And demonic form Zod is 100x stronger than he is without the armor.
Not to mention Griffith is a God.

It goes back to the spiral of fate. Guts is speed running skull Knights life story

The same armor that turned Skully into a husk is doing the same to Guts, and it also lets us see the demon Guts would become if he used the Behelit. The one he could use at anytime if he would be willing to sacrifice his friends.

Yes. I thought get used at the end of the arc where Miura died because every other arc ending has had a beherit activation except for this one. I haven’t kept up in years , how likely is it he actually wrote the script to the story for his apprentices?

I’d normally call bs, but he gave interviews about health problems and being afraid he’d pass on before he finished and that he was about 60% through the story.

I can actually see him writing a script. I mean he did hire apprentices after his hiatuses piled up when he never used them before.

He didn't write a script. Mori said he's the only one Miura told about the script. So he could be making it all up.

Now that I think of it, there's still a chance that Guts activates his beherit in the next few chapters since he's depressed. It'd be a good excuse to kill off some useless characters like Azan, Serpico, Isidro, and Magnifico.

Isidro is such a disappointment. We have extensive knowledge about so many characters, but next to nothing about him. Miura never bothered to delve into his past so we could understand why he's such a little butthole. That wouldn't be a problem if he were to never return after Conviction, but he's been in the story this whole time

Feels bad this series has so much character bloat, many of which are just there for comedy and serve no other purpose at all. Puck at least made sense, since he took some of the heat off of the manga being super grimdark, but then the comical characters got way out of hand

                Anonymous

Honestly Berserk has always been so shit at balancing tones, it was edgy as frick even with Puck around and his "comedy" was something nobody in history has ever laughed at. The justification always seems to be they balance each other out initially but this just isn't true

                Anonymous

A shame too that Miura took Puck and made him even more absurdly goofy and unfunny when Isidro came in. Both of them became insufferable when they were present

                >his "comedy" was something nobody in history has ever laughed at

Come to think of it, I do struggle to remember anything Puck did that made me laugh. Maybe a few scenes, most of which involved him being horrified by what he's looking at

                >Puck seeing the pickled elf in the jar
                >Puck realizing he's holding a human eyeball
                >Puck trying to escape the rock pile Guts trapped him in
                >Puck getting fricked over by the falling rock when trying to kite the Slug King
                >Puck getting kicked in the stomach by Ivalera after Puck just got done eating a ton of food (this is more of a funny thing Ivalera herself did rather than Puck)

Doesn't need one. He almost stabbed him in the eye when he was Femto. All the God Hand laughed at first, then he somehow pulled a little closer and they were taken aback. You learn the origins of where they came from later. He's going up against monsters that have God-like power, with weapons some old man in a cabin made out of iron and gunpowder, but that's too much for you? You want Guts to fight them bare assed with no weapons at all?

Miura had to set him up as the loyal but doubting young knight in Griffith's service, before he could go down the journey of becoming branded as a heretic by the faith, for rejecting it all when he learned the truth. Guts is going to kill everyone on the boat except for Rickert who will be the key to defeating Griffith Guts will revert back to his normal state realizing what he has done Rickert will say he's a monster and on the same level as Griffith is just pointless killing until he finally gets his dream. Rickert because of his role as a hawk will be the one who will manage to deliver a final killing blow to the Moonlight Child, Guts and Casca will try to kill it so they can wound Griffith and finally bring about his downfall but their brands stop them from achieving that.

The story isn’t that edgy anymore and they wouldn’t kill off the cast like that. I think it’ll proceed as a straightforward conflict story with Guts coming into his own as a leader of men and fighting Griffith on the battle field
Then something weird and edgy will happen like Casca leading Griffith’s army

Black Swordswman hardly has any plot or characters, everything is too one-faceted and bland, Guts is edgy in a very childish, Shadow the Hedgehog tier way. With the Count we see some smidges at wanting to develop the story more but it only really picks up once the God Hand is summoned.
You could skip the Snake Apostle and wouldn't really miss anything. That part specially feels like a bad pilot, as if Miura was just testing the waters and did not have anything planned yet.
Lost Children has an apostle with an actual motivation instead of "le evil" or "my wife cucked me" and characters feel like real people instead of setpieces and clichés. Plus it's an actual story instead of two quick "Protagonist arrives in town ruled by evil despot and kills him" throwaways

          Anonymous

          >You could skip the Snake Apostle and wouldn't really miss anything

I agree, though you could honestly say the same about a great deal of chapters in this manga. Half the fun of the manga is just watching Guts overcome seemingly impossible obstacles

          >Lost Children has an apostle with an actual motivation instead of "le evil" or "my wife cucked me"

I'll give you the Snake Baron didn't have much depth, but the Count getting fricked over by his wife isn't a bad reason to fall into despair. If you look at the marriage situation in the USA/Japan, there's evidence enough. The Count rejecting the Godhand at the end to save his little girl was also one of the only times we see an Apostle choose his/her family over self-indulgence. Also, Guts crying after his conversation with Therisa is one of the most iconic panels in the whole series, since it shows you that underneath his hardened exterior, Guts is still a man who feels

          >characters feel like real people instead of setpieces and clichés

Collette, Vargas, and Therisa I thought were just fine. Miura gave them reasons enough for being there and they served a narrative purpose

Yeah, I agree here, when the God Hand first appears it picks up noticeably in quality and when Guts stops being an one-note edgegay. Love the whole aftermath of that encounter
            >Collette, Vargas, and Therisa I thought were just fine. Miura gave them reasons enough for being there and they served a narrative purpose
I agree, even if I didn't really care about Vargas or Collette. Hell, I didn't remember Collette, but she was fine enough and set up the Brand's whole thing I guess.
