Pretty much every other big anime intrigued me at one point in time. but never One Piece. As a kid I avoided it actively, and never once did I think about watching it.
I started watching it while hungover a handful of times through a 24/7 One Piece channel a few years ago and ended up eventually seeing like 2/3rds of the existing series
It's not as bad as I thought it was 2 decades ago however a lot of the negativity I had associated with the series came from comparing it to other anime/manga and I think this series is more enjoyable if you can just look at like it's it own thing. Then again I've been at rock bottom in life for a long time and my mental illness / escapism habits probably contributes to a large amount of the enjoyment I get out of the series (a lot of people are putoff by the length but the length is one of the biggest reasons I enjoy it)
The longevity of the series is its biggest strength imo, comparing it other shonen I can definitely say that there are other series that "get more done in a shorter amount of time", but part of the charm in this series is that it grows into itself more as the arcs go by.
I think the artstyle is probably the hardest selling point, like you really just have to view the series as if it was loony toons and be able to get past/accept that, and even then it's riddled with lots of tropey cliche shonen things, but if you enjoy other shonen it shouldn't be hard to look past that stuff (I know there's a lot of claims of it being "generic" but it does get subversive as the series seems very self-aware). Pacing is kind of ass at times but there's a fun series underneath that.
It's really hard to say how I actually feel about this series but you have to remember that it's just a cartoon with hard-shonen storytelling and if you enjoy cartoons and enjoy shonen, you might like this series

it gets good at Buggy, then again at Krieg, even moreso at Arlong, then again at Crocodile, Enel, Lucci and finally it crescendos at Impel Down to Marineford before it dies down to a fluctuating quality

I'd watch and rewatch out of order arcs various times on a stream channel and I think I stockholm syndromed myself into liking it eventually
First 60 eps isn't really enough time to give it a fair evaluation..I think you'd actually need to watch up until the timeskip to get a fair assessment on the series, like if you don't like it all by the timeskip, odds aren't you won't like afterwards
idk Arlong Park is a powerful story that really makes you care for the characters and it ends with some really good shonen style action, The moment where Luffy pummels Arlong into the room where he imprisoned Nami as a child making her draw maps and tears through all of that work Arlong made her do finally making her realize she doesn't have to be owned anymore was so powerful it can make me tear up just thinking about it

I think One Piece anime has around 350 hours worth of content just from the episodes and none of the movies included, maybe 50hours of those episodes being filler
For the other shows maybe, but for one piece (as well as dbz) you can watch 60eps in 10-12hours if you skip the never ending running, the repeating fights, the useless side quests that brings nothing to the main plot.

Nobody does really. japs have been compelling about scribble piece for a while now. thing is that Oda has some major eye issues that made him nearly blind and he just recently had eye surgery for it. Here's hoping that it'll improve in the next months.

Give evidence of this writing. For an outsider One Piece is a soap opera meandering towards the author's retirement. There will always be another island, another set of characters to slow the pacing for the already bloated cast, another nami, another villain with a sad backstory, another asspull powerup and another mindless punchup for the fans to gaggle out as if the end isn't already predetermined and the action doesn't amount to more than jiggling keys.

Why do people keep spouting this moronic take? It would just make every fight require an unnatural gimmick and people would scream it was an asspull every time, like they did with the blood stopping Crocodile and Luffy being a complete counter to Enel. Haki shows the progression of Luffy, he can fight on equal terms with enemies that were invincible before because he's gotten stronger.
Blood/mortality stopping sand/immortality was great. The logic is sound and the thematic elements are perfect. Crocodile believes himself invulnerable but the weakness of a mortal form is his undoing. Everyone holds that sequence in high regard because it wasn’t an asspull, it wasn’t power of friendship, it wasn’t “oh the hook is his weak spot,” no one rescued luffy, he survives by almost bleeding to death.
“I’m a rubber man” and enel’s reaction is another stellar point, because the fight doesn’t just end there, the shock wears off and enel proves he doesn’t just rest on his logia, and is still a legitimate threat to be overcome.
It IS an asspull because the government never made him a priority to capture when he first got a bounty and his powers became known to them.

Moments like that is why people began to seriously respect one piece. There haven’t been moments like that for over a decade now.

at the end of the day Luffy beats Kaido partly because his powers but also because Kaido is a washed up defeated warrior from a bygone era and Luffy is the unstoppable new generation personified, the themes are still there you just have to pay attention, the arc drives in that Kaido was shamed a generation ago and no longer had the necessary ambition that it takes to win

You have to know the world and characters but I'll give some examples of perfected writing, Gear 5 was referred to as the return of Joyboy this ancient figure of freedom, in the chapter where Luffy embodies him you see him turn the ultimate warrior Kaido into a plaything a victim of a Looney Tunes Cartoon, to see this after all the build up could ellicit no feeling but happiness especially in readers who follow the story with the countless references to laughter and smiling like Roger seeing the One Piece and its mystery being built upon because it made him and his crew erupt in laughter, bottom line the writing is entertaining and endearing and those are very important qualities in good writing, its not hard to comprehend or overly complicated
my point is that Luffy grinning like a madman and winding up his arm before launching it as far as he wants with literal cartoon physics half the time was Looney Tunes before he got to Gear 5, hes sucked in air to blow up like a balloon many times, hes always been attached to Looney Tunes Oda said it himself, Gear 5 being toon powers/freedom powers is way better narratively than some kind of Black personmode Super Saiyan Haki Gear 5 like the hispanics wanted, what would you have done instead? Beating an immortal because of the mortality he’s underestimating is a pretty good bit of writing, objectively. The fact it wasn’t obvious and most people were expecting some deus ex machina to save luffy just made it hit harder. I've been following One Piece since I was a kid in the late 90s. It was a lot better before the time skip. I tried to follow the story but I dropped it shortly after Dressrosa. I recently went back to catch up with the Wano arc but I didn't finish it. The panels are so busy and there are hundreds of pointless characters to keep track of. Sometimes you barely make up what's going on in a page. The current story feels less like an adventure and more like a WWE stageplay. I miss the ragtag team going on adventures in unknown lands. Loofy is a God-like being now. I don't know how they can possibly find stronger enemies to fight.

it's still going because of the greediness and israelitery of the creator. and that second part is wrong. so many beautifully emotional moments after their first battle. the shogi scene with shikamaru and jiraiya dying are two off the top of my head.
I caught up to the manga about a month ago, so I was already aware of what was gonna happen. Haven't seen the episode yet, as i'm waiting for Wano to completely rap up. I've got mixed feelings about the reveal ("I've never heard of a gum-gum fruit."), but at least the god he emulates or is the avatar of or whatever matches his personality, and there was no way Oda was going to NOT asspull something or raise the power level stakes in the face of a yonko. Overall it's fine, and I like it. It could be a LOT worse, like Wano's ending. Wano's ending was rushed and shit in the manga. Dressrosa and the reactions to it def traumatized Oda.

I think Luffy trains once in the whole manga and it's off panel. He usually beats the villain's by being inventive with his powers and surroundings. The only Strawhat you see training regularly is Zoro the Swordsman and that's in the downtime between arcs
its a character world and story driven manga, its about the adventure and the mstery, the individual iconic moments where a character triumps over seeming insurmountable odds and stands up for what they believe in, their dreams, or what they treasure, often their home or way of life, it lacks any of the self conscious bitter irony of modern day entertainment because its all the writer trying to write the ultimate tale of a hero's journey to become king but not to rule instead to become unrulable, bottom line its the incredibly heartfelt and incredibly hype when it gets to its singular character moments

One piece fans live in a bubble. They spam this gear 5 hit for a year straight hyping it up and when it finally happens, literally nothing. Just some shitty transformation while sucking each other off calling it the "greatest thing in shonen ever". All this is happening while grandma asks you to turn that dragonball nonsense off so she cant watch her weird health show.
Post time skip doubles down on character bloat in every arc, the pacing of the anime becomes downright insulting, with episodes being constantly padded by drawn out reaction shots, recaps of things you saw 3 episodes ago, lots of other shit.
A massive issue I take with it is that after the timeskip, the studio decided every fight needs to play out like a dragon ball z Kamehameha beam struggle, but with fists so it doesn’t make any fricking sense and it looks moronic. No fight can just end with a clean blow, Luffy has to connect his fist with the opponents attack, and then float in the air for 20 seconds before somehow generating more punch in the punch that already connected, as if it’s an energy beam from dragon ball.

I'm guessing like 90% of the problem with all of that and many other quality issues is just the fact that both the anime and manga are weekly, the anime needing to use all sorts of episode padding techniques to keep the pace from running right into the manga, and if that happened you'd just get giant 25+ episode filler arcs instead of having the canon episodes meshed with filler

A couple instances had really wonky animation. Nips clearly don’t have a fricking clue how cartoon sound effects are supposed to work. I hope whoever’s job that was got fricking executed. Literally just spamming cartoon sound effects with no visual cues to match. All in all the gear 5 stuff was pretty good though. I wish death upon whoever decided to insert and drag out the Hiyori bullshit. God damn with the exception of gear 5 Wano is a such a shit arc with a ton of nothing characters I never want to see again.
This buried my interest in One Piece. It's bad enough that plot threads are going to get rushed past or ignored, they had to go and give Luffy a DBZ powerup.

Pretty much every other big anime intrigued me at one point in time. but never One Piece. As a kid I avoided it actively, and never once did I think about watching it.
I started watching it while hungover a handful of times through a 24/7 One Piece channel a few years ago and ended up eventually seeing like 2/3rds of the existing series
It's not as bad as I thought it was 2 decades ago however a lot of the negativity I had associated with the series came from comparing it to other anime/manga and I think this series is more enjoyable if you can just look at like it's it own thing. Then again I've been at rock bottom in life for a long time and my mental illness / escapism habits probably contributes to a large amount of the enjoyment I get out of the series (a lot of people are putoff by the length but the length is one of the biggest reasons I enjoy it)
The longevity of the series is its biggest strength imo, comparing it other shonen I can definitely say that there are other series that "get more done in a shorter amount of time", but part of the charm in this series is that it grows into itself more as the arcs go by.
I think the artstyle is probably the hardest selling point, like you really just have to view the series as if it was loony toons and be able to get past/accept that, and even then it's riddled with lots of tropey cliche shonen things, but if you enjoy other shonen it shouldn't be hard to look past that stuff (I know there's a lot of claims of it being "generic" but it does get subversive as the series seems very self-aware). Pacing is kind of ass at times but there's a fun series underneath that.
It's really hard to say how I actually feel about this series but you have to remember that it's just a cartoon with hard-shonen storytelling and if you enjoy cartoons and enjoy shonen, you might like this series

idk Arlong Park is a powerful story that really makes you care for the characters and it ends with some really good shonen style action, The moment where Luffy pummels Arlong into the room where he imprisoned Nami as a child making her draw maps and tears through all of that work Arlong made her do finally making her realize she doesn't have to be owned anymore was so powerful it can make me tear up just thinking about it
I don't think the series shows everything it has to offer unless you get a lot more of it under your belt
Arlong park has a couple emotional scenes but the series is kind of snails pace and barebones on the settings until later on

I think One Piece anime has around 350 hours worth of content just from the episodes and none of the movies included, maybe 50hours of those episodes being filler
For the other shows maybe, but for one piece (as well as dbz) you can watch 60eps in 10-12hours if you skip the never ending running, the repeating fights, the useless side quests that brings nothing to the main plot.

Oda knowing how to subvert expectations in non pretentious ways and knowing how to make an exciting iconic moment again and again is good writing, every so many chapters Oda has another world shattering moment that is as big a deal to those who pay attention as any big event in the world, we're watching the greatest story ever told in real time

It would just make every fight require an unnatural gimmick and people would scream it was an asspull every time, like they did with the blood stopping Crocodile and Luffy being a complete counter to Enel. Haki shows the progression of Luffy, he can fight on equal terms with enemies that were invincible before because he's gotten stronger.
Blood/mortality stopping sand/immortality was great. The logic is sound and the thematic elements are perfect. Crocodile believes himself invulnerable but the weakness of a mortal form is his undoing. Everyone holds that sequence in high regard because it wasn’t an asspull, it wasn’t power of friendship, it wasn’t “oh the hook is his weak spot,” no one rescued luffy, he survives by almost bleeding to death.
“I’m a rubber man” and enel’s reaction is another stellar point, because the fight doesn’t just end there, the shock wears off and enel proves he doesn’t just rest on his logia, and is still a legitimate threat to be overcome.

Moments like that is why people began to seriously respect one piece. There haven’t been moments like that for over a decade now.
at the end of the day Luffy beats Kaido partly because his powers but also because Kaido is a washed up defeated warrior from a bygone era and Luffy is the unstoppable new generation personified, the themes are still there you just have to pay attention, the arc drives in that Kaido was shamed a generation ago and no longer had the necessary ambition that it takes to win
Which is, again, the exact opposite of why Luffy vs crocodile had weight/value.
the value is that Luffy overcoming Kaido is the moment the old guard dies, the entire manga goes back to the new generation and how much is being shaken up with them and Luffy has finally willed his way into legend alongside other members of the new gen, its the entire point of the manga

You have to know the world and characters but I'll give some examples of perfected writing, Gear 5 was referred to as the return of Joyboy this ancient figure of freedom, in the chapter where Luffy embodies him you see him turn the ultimate warrior Kaido into a plaything a victim of a Looney Tunes Cartoon, to see this after all the build up could ellicit no feeling but happiness especially in readers who follow the story with the countless references to laughter and smiling like Roger seeing the One Piece and its mystery being built upon because it made him and his crew erupt in laughter, bottom line the writing is entertaining and endearing and those are very important qualities in good writing, its not hard to comprehend or overly complicated

Beating an immortal because of the mortality he’s underestimating is a pretty good bit of writing, objectively. The fact it wasn’t obvious and most people were expecting some deus ex machina to save luffy just made it hit harder. I've been following One Piece since I was a kid in the late 90s. It was a lot better before the time skip. I tried to follow the story but I dropped it shortly after Dressrosa. I recently went back to catch up with the Wano arc but I didn't finish it. The panels are so busy and there are hundreds of pointless characters to keep track of. Sometimes you barely make up what's going on in a page. The current story feels less like an adventure and more like a WWE stageplay. I miss the ragtag team going on adventures in unknown lands. Loofy is a God-like being now. I don't know how they can possibly find stronger enemies to fight.

I think Luffy trains once in the whole manga and it's off panel. He usually beats the villain's by being inventive with his powers and surroundings. The only Strawhat you see training regularly is Zoro the Swordsman and that's in the downtime between arcs
its a character world and story driven manga, its about the adventure and the mstery, the individual iconic moments where a character triumps over seeming insurmountable odds and stands up for what they believe in, their dreams, or what they treasure, often their home or way of life, it lacks any of the self conscious bitter irony of modern day entertainment because its all the writer trying to write the ultimate tale of a hero's journey to become king but not to rule instead to become unrulable, bottom line its the incredibly heartfelt and incredibly hype when it gets to its singular character moments

Post time skip doubles down on character bloat in every arc, the pacing of the anime becomes downright insulting, with episodes being constantly padded by drawn out reaction shots, recaps of things you saw 3 episodes ago, lots of other shit.
A massive issue I take with it is that after the timeskip, the studio decided every fight needs to play out like a dragon ball z Kamehameha beam struggle, but with fists so it doesn’t make any fricking sense and it looks moronic. No fight can just end with a clean blow, Luffy has to connect his fist with the opponents attack, and then float in the air for 20 seconds before somehow generating more punch in the punch that already connected, as if it’s an energy beam from dragon ball.

I'm guessing like 90% of the problem with all of that and many other quality issues is just the fact that both the anime and manga are weekly, the anime needing to use all sorts of episode padding techniques to keep the pace from running right into the manga, and if that happened you'd just get giant 25+ episode filler arcs instead of having the canon episodes meshed with filler

A couple instances had really wonky animation. Nips clearly don’t have a fricking clue how cartoon sound effects are supposed to work. I hope whoever’s job that was got fricking executed. Literally just spamming cartoon sound effects with no visual cues to match. All in all the gear 5 stuff was pretty good though. I wish death upon whoever decided to insert and drag out the Hiyori bullshit. God damn with the exception of gear 5 Wano is a such a shit arc with a ton of nothing characters I never want to see again.
