What is the goal of the horror genre, exactly? What do you mean by "scary"? Some people like jump scares, others don't. Some want gore and brutality, others want slow burn tension and/or off screen violence.
I think the horror genre is better now than it's ever been. There's far more selection available for whatever your preferences are. It's easier to access the films than ever. Special effects are far more believable than before. Cinematic quality achievable from a low budget is vastly superior to what was affordable even a couple decades ago. Old movies haven't disappeared, so you have everything from today as well as back then.
In line with the above, this post is truth, as much as many people on this board want to pretend it's not so as to have an excuse for their own complicity in the state of their miserable lives.

Things were better on average "back then" because most of the world was facing crippling post-war economic devastation or constant government collapses, coups, and civil wars. The surviving states were propped up on the dozens of non-functional ones acting as resource pools for the wealthy ones. The violent crime rate in the first world was much higher then than it was now. No one in the USA is being forced into military service.
I didn't say that people today have shitty lives because it's their "own fault". I'm saying that it's false that 100% of why their lives suck is because of conditions totally out of their control. People had to put in effort to have nice lives back then, and they still do. Even if the balance has shifted from "60% luck / 40% effort" to "50% luck / 50% effort", in almost all cases if you have a shitty life today and you live in a first-world country, that's due to your own choices.

Employers have never been a good judge of competency, back then or now. They've always been nepotistic, clannish, and short-sighted.

Health care is much improved, there's mind-blowingly more diversity/access in entertainment and music, people have more ability to control their style/clothing, everyone has access to Wikipedia and tons of self-education materials, you can do all of your shopping quickly and efficiently, the air is cleaner, you can work from home, you can read news about any topic 24/7, people don't smoke cigarettes indoors all the time, you can communicate with friends/family across the globe instantly, etc.
You are just seeking misery if you're being intentionally ignorant to how much the world has changed within a couple generations. "Houses are expensive!" is not a sign that the world has become an unlivable post-apocalyptic nightmare beyond reckoning.
