Offhand what I would change are the "animated storyboards." That's literally what they are right? I don't vaguely recall animation being particularly appropriate for those segments in the first place let alone that style of animation. I think something should be left out if all I'm gonna be shown are the storyboards? Wtf is that shit. At best I think that style is an attempt to normalize what I recall are literally 100% just animated storyboards. So I really don't think that stuff should even be tolerated at all.
I watched the after film interview with cage and cosmatos for this, hosted by fricking kevin smith lol. a couple of impressions I got from the interview:
-cage wanted the cult leader role and it looks like he was disappointed to not get it
-cosmatos looked like a kid next to cage, I imagine he wasn't very assertive with him in directing the movie, for better or worse. cage probably has more filmmaking experience than him after all.

I saw a late showing at a small theater and it was so fun, one of the most memorable theater experiences for me in the last ten years
