It is sadly the character seems to be a pitch for a series that went no where. Me and the (OP) thought she was cute and wanted to do a thread about her as we made a mini story about where we'd take the series mostly us just being cringe lords lol. I said I'd be the drawgay for the thread I'm working on something now but it's just a doodle.

What if there is another character who is everything Mary thinks she is, but because she's that character "the wrong way" (ie she's classical/"outdated") Mary is constantly trying to outdo or one-up her? Like a sister or otherwise another female character who is the Gallant to Mary's Goofus, just with less moralizing and more comedic contrast.
The character would have to be used sparringly to ensure she herself does not actually become a mary sue herself, but making the insecurity/envy behind the archtype into an actual character dynamic seems like it might work.

Essentially, if this was a normal fantasy setting, then Clara would be a Mary Sue played straight. She would fail, then succeed, then go on having learned a little. But as a fantasy gone wrong parody setting inhabited by lunatics, Clara becomes just another nutter in the loony bin. She has a lot more to work with because the other adventurers in the setting are actually capable of matching her energy and even out crazying her Sueishness

The fun part is that it doesn’t. In my parody worlds narcissistic heroes and lunatics are common, meaning that nobody has any reason to care about Clara because to them she’s just the latest in the long line of crazy wannabe heroes.
To a Mary Sue, this kind of parody world is the ultimate humiliation, because in it, they aren’t special
I like that. It stresses the point that being a hero doesn't mean to be seeking adventure and romance but doing the right thing despite people being ungrateful.
The idea I think would be interesting as a plot point is that Clara has four options in her situation

I have been following the thread since it was made because that art in OP is really eye catching. Although the character is more of someone's oc than public ip so i try not to be too vindictive about it.

That's fair, have to find your footing in a way that's comfortable for you, and it's mostly how the original shirt looked more badass I guess? Something about how it kinda blended with the pants to resemble a flight suit right down to the sleeves, also really like the bigger collar that exposes a bit more of the chest.

But the Black Knight resisted and conquered the armor, becoming a dark hero for good. Now in the modern age, Clara finds herself given a gift of dark armor from a secret admirer, not knowing of its corruptive influence

It's probably like that to underline how unfitting the character is in her environment, but I just keep dwelling on how little fanfiction ever writes characters using such lighthearted and comical language. It's always just swears, swears, and more swears like a twelve year old on an FPS voicechat.
Part of it's because a lot of fanfic writers are still quite young when they start, probably think swearing will make their works seem more mature, realize it's cringey but then embrace it on an ironic level. Plus something about the tonal inconsistency probably makes it seem neat, like seeing a goofy cartoon character drink or smoke.

Yeah, have her eventually realize what's going on and grow and change as a character. Maybe contrast the force she was dropped into (friendly facade with hatred underneath) with the one she's being used against (aggressive/blunt affect but righteous) and have her realize that nice doesn't mean good.

have this perfect mary sue everyone agrees with and the show always paints out to be correct NOT be the protagonist and instead follow the only character/a small subset of characters who aren't completely bending the knee to her
then reveal her to have some "it's a good life" tier level of control over the setting

I feel we do now have a new variation I call mary sue adjacent. They tend to do the listed things but only partially but even when they fail it's not even seen as bad. Like rwby literally destroying a whole kingdom and her lesson was just well you tried your best and you did better than ironwood who was also trying his best. Or korra who feels like a mary sue but she's also a jobber but really wins somehow do to plot or is a butthole and still forgiven or right in the end.

I think one of my favorite deconstructions oc this is the manga Medaka Box where the titular character is so perfect that she becomes a weird inhuman sociopath. She tries tutoring students and fails because all her advice is remembering to write your name and avoiding being one answer off on the answer sheet. The best way is to just make the perspective character NOT Mary Sue. Personally I think it would be fun to see the best friend/sidekick character in the starring role. You could make it cynical but I like the idea of mary-sue really appreciating her best friends help even though she's a dumb abject screw up. Basically a girl who's perfect at everything and a girl who's bad at most things being best buddies.

And that's neat, they tackle some of the same broad strokes when it comes to camp-related anxiety so it makes sense. Pretty much, took over the channel like a squishy yellow tumor lol. And yup it gives people a taste of the lore without having to get 100% invested all at once, and I could definitely see that, stakes get a bit higher/more bleak as things go on. It largely comes down to people being bored and having a bit of a protagonist complex, wanting to be the hero of their own little quest in this case.

So next time we can just do same thread title and then use what we've got here and instead of just mary sue's see if people want to talk the ideas from the start. But it did pretty well we may just make it to 500 and I know I'll do at least one more sketch hopefully more of a try at a long form comic of Clara so wish me luck. That's kind of the idea with the frickboi knight idea me and OP talked about one idea is they meet on her first day or week as a knight everyone is nice and kind. It all plays out just like her fantasies until first contact with the enemy, where a foul-mouthed and homely young man engages her directly to buy time for his people to escape. He says many cryptic things before being taken down and captured that seem to imply something deeper and sinister going on with Mary's new friends. Most of all he refers to her as "another kidnapped child"
This eats at Mary as she continues to enjoy her fantasies, and when she finds out she's not allowed to speak with the prisoner she finally grows suspicious enough to start actually engaging her brain.
Now Mary must pretend she's the same blissfully ignorant stooge she was before as she attempts to contact the prisoner and investigate her "friends" without being caught.
Over the course of her investigation she'd slowly uncover bits and pieces of information eventually leading to the full truth: anyone brought here from our Earth would have her powers, and the faction specifically selects for deluded people like Mary Sue who will be easy to manipulate with flattery and visual language that matches her media consumption. They're used as powerful weapons of war against a rebel army until they're either killed in battle or start asking too many questions and are disposed of. In the climax she must break the prisoner free and escape to join the rebellion.
Honestly really like this angle, power fantasy that turns out to be them playing right into an oppressor's hands. Reminds me a bit of Strange Dawn actually, albeit the protag actually has powers which gives it less broad politically-focused stakes. In short I'd watch the shit out of this, anon.

1 - accurately portray the base element you're satirizing (ie present the actual mary-sue elements straight at least to begin with as well as the person who writes mary-sues)
2 - deconstruct them with realistic motivations (why would a large group of strangely attractive people fawn over an obnoxious fangirl? To manipulate her.)
3 - provide opportunities for growth out of the mary-sue mindset through both external criticism (the prisoner) and internal investigation
I think if you can hit those three elements then regardless of what the actual details of the story are you'd have something worth expanding on

Yep, really as you said it's a well known webcomic and this is a pitch that seems to have only been shown internally. We only have it because of her 1 or 2 twitter post. So the odds are it never made it past the test animatics or draft page. She may have some care for it but odds are with how the tweet sounded not much seems like a cope show or one to just ride the wave of pushing a lgbt fem protag. Also really indie is the way to go now anyway especially for most of these artist that tend to get ass raped by disney. I intentionally wanted to leave some of het details a bit vague so that some other anons could have a chance to fill in some of the details and make her more appealing to them. So both horns and or twintails are up to you as I wanted her to be mailable enough at the moment so that she could properly fit our collective vision.

She’s definitely a powerful sorceress when compared to the lower levels, but she is not very strong when compared to her family or the legendary heroes they fight against

Yeah, that's been the main theme of the thread and most of the convos so far. Sadly a lot of creatives like her and others can sometimes get to into there own heads and petty. As she said in the twitter post it sounded like she made it about being LGBT instead of being a series. It happens a lot now but it usually means the mc will never face any real conflict or blow back for their actions or mentality.
Yep, this is sadly how it goes. Really sad but they make these characters as either self inserts or as another anon brought up coping mechanisms. So they have to be perfect to fit their ideals, and usually this means caricaturizing the villian who is a strawman. But it's also why people tend to connect with the villians, look at Falcon and the Winter soldier. They were so obsessed with tokenism/the mc being right, they made every poc insufferable except the one they implied was a uncle tom and the bad guy John Walker tends to get a lot of love now as people realize he's like in his early to mid 20s and these 30-40 year old men bullied him for taking a job they didn't want. Somehow though you were actually supposed to side with the unstable, selfish, aggressive brown female terrorist who murdered 1000s of people and even killed a guy that said he had a family but then cried about her family being harmed.

The biggest problem with token representation is that creators are hesitant to paint the character in any sort of negative light because they are worried it will smear the entire demographic, but without flaws it makes it nearly impossible to relate to or root for the character.

That is my point. It isn't the flaw per se but the consequences. There is also how give characters exaggerated unlikable personalities and people go all "at least she has a personality now!" (either c**ty or quirky).

Well, I actually had a thought on this in my own idea of a Star Wars sequel trilogy. Basically Rey, in my idea, is a spunky, cheerful jedi padawan in Luke's new Jedi Order and apprentice to Ben Solo and wants a chance to go on a big adventure or save the galaxy like in the Galactic Civil War or the Clone Wars with everyone older telling her she's being naive and those were not fun times. Over the course of the trilogy she'd experience hardships and trauma that would break her naive idealism, but ultimately avoids falling into despair and cynicism by finding a balance of realistic expectations while holding onto hope.

This was a pitched character for a show about a lesbian knight who wants to “kiss all the girls”, based on two pictures they drew where the character was overtly gay. Regardless of whether this was the true nature of the pitch or not, people took Cotugno’s memed idea they did to “get back” at the lack of gay rep on television and memed it harder into her being someone who lacks boundaries or consent in a Johnny Bravo fashion. This goes back at least 5-6 years, when they first drew the picture and posted it on their Tumblr and it made it into an old SVTFOE thread. For some reason, this idea got popular again here, hence this thread.
