This is literally the first time I've heard about this movie. I thought Ghibli was shut down and Miyazaki quit for good. A new traditional 2D animation Ghibli movie sounds great, why would anyone be negative towards that?

You didn't see this cool poster yet? It's supposedly his last film

He's been saying that for years, but then his kid's film was such a disappointment for him that he came back.

Tales of earthsea or that ugly cg movie

Miyazaki walked out of the theater during Earthsea, i doubt he even bothered watching the other one and just instinctively knew it was trash

That poster tells me absolutely nothing about the movie. Is it a bird inside a bird costume?

Is it a bird inside a bird costume?
          idk
          >The film is said to be a slice of life with spiritual themes added in for good measure. There are a lot of family themes in this film. Some are implying that this is Miyazaki’s apology letter to his son for being a bad dad. The film is about a young boy, Mahito, during World War II and it opens with his mother's devastating death due to air raids. It's slightly harrowing with a tinge of horror.

thats actually kind of bs to the point that i suspect the guy saying that was lying, not saying its good, but its actually a trippy adventure and theres family themes yes, but theres weird shit like the MC hitting his own head with a rock to bleed so he can skip school and the family stuff, well, lets just say that his father marries her late wifes sister and gets her pregnant, which fricks up the MC.

All this slice of life shit was said by a guy that claimed it was about a bird that wanted to learn more about humans and how they live, theres footage and most people say the bird is actually a fat ugly dude in a bird costume who is part of this abstract story about some sort of plot to make the MC the ruler or something of a fantasy land where birds eat people, all to prevent his world from ending but at the end the MC just lets that world end. alll of this is to make a big thing out of the drama between the existence of the dead mother and the new life growing in the new mother, btw keep in mind most people who post here about this film clearly dont understand japanese since they always say they dont understand any of he subtleties, there was even a guy who thought the new mother was meant to be nice woman but the MC is awkward around her because he is a kid when actually is because, you know, she is his motherfricking aunt who inmediately happily rided his father´s dick right after his mother died

so its totoro x spirited away again with some ww2 autobiography shit

              Sounds like pretentious shit.

Now I know why they didn't release any trailers. It's so people actually go see this thinking it might be another old-style Miyazaki hit, but seems like he just made another post-war mopefest.

There's rumors that Japanese people aren't liking the message very much because it's very anti-collectivist, but it's probably the same sort of stuff that Miyazaki has always been making.

I hope it's good. The newest Ghiblis or Ghibli adjacent movies I've seen are The Wind Rises, When Marnie Was There, Princess Kaguya, and The Red Turtle and I enjoyed all of them. Not sure if I've missed any since then

      >Not sure if I've missed any since then

There's this. It was a TV movie and Ghibli's attempt at CGI. Kind of just came and went without any fanfare. Goro made it and probably why Miyazaki came out of retirement again.

Their development budget is also a frsction of an American animation. Hand drawn films take time but in the end cost less than the massive CG render farms.

it's late this year in the USA.

Is it even nicely animated? Or is it some bullshit like The Tale of the Princess Kaguya? Also why is there no trailer?

It doesn't need much marketing. the animation is standard Ghibli.

I wonder what he actually thinks about WW2 and Japan's role in it and whether he considered Germany to actually be bad guys.
I remember he was into WW2 german paraphernalia and so on.

I mean his works are generally against tyranny and fascism, even very overtly so, but then again he seems like he doesn't translate it to WW2 at all.

he's a bitter boomer. he doesn't acknowledge what japan did during the war but readily attacks america for being violent and cruel and whatever else. he's a massive hypocrite

It's too distant from his own experience for him to reflect on at all, Germany is just a source of cool tanks and planes to draw for him and Japan is just the Japan that he knows, nothing more. Compared to someone like Shigeru Mizuki who actually had to fight in the war and barely survived. Even though he lost his arm, his brother and his family's home there's none of that bitterness-fueled soft apologia in his works about the war, he's made some of that most scathing indictments of the Imperial regime out there.
