This is why dual audio is great. If I want to focus on the original voices and more directly translated dialog, I can watch it with subtitles. If I want to focus on the visuals and cinematography, then I can watch the dub.
Of course English dub quality varies greatly from film to film.

      Anonymous

You know it depends on the movie, Come and See was an easy watch for me with subtitles, maybe because when there is dialogue the pace is slower than when there is action. Some movies have fast paced dialogue though and it can be hard to keep up.

                >The difference always extremely noticeable.
nope, for instance I know for a fact that dubs in countries with very good VA traditions are sometimes better than the original
You can look up Disney ones on youtube
I get your argument if it's actual physical actors, I never watch dubs no matter how obscure the language

                Anonymous

You are right that in a small handfull of instances the dub is good, and in even smaller instances it is better(Cowboy Bebop and Princess Mononoke are good examples of a fantastic dubs) But in 99% of cases the original is better by far. And GitS falls into that catagory.

          Anonymous

there is a case to always watch real life media in its original language and to read translated subs because the overdub for your language will not match up with the mouth/facial movements of the actors on screen which can be jarring.

but with animation this like 90% of the time is not an issue because most anime "speach" is just mouth flapping and is not actually correctly animated to the original language anyway.
you can dub in many languages and have it still fit the original animation.

you are only assuming that it is better.

same goes for japs who think jap VA is better, they dont know english so they have no fricking clue if english is good or bad.

voice acting in any language can be bad but you can only know that its bad if you truly understand that language

english for 1995 is objectively better than jap
english for sac is objectively better than jap
english for Innocence is arguably better than jap
japanese for arise and related media is objectively better than english

            Anonymous

because i only speak english and also from what i have heard from many people of a variety of ages from around the world, even from people that generally hate english dub on any anime have said that the english dub for gits 1995 is very good.

the english dub for sac is very similar to 1995 but is a little more natural and has a different but similar voice actor for the major

            for 1995

for sac and various other gits media.

in 1995 the major has a slight (sometimes very noticable) "robotic" sound to her voice but i think this actually matches perfectly with the character in this movie.

      Anonymous

      >english for 1995 is objectively better than jap
English dub is unreliable. Because they just add female SWAT voice in the opening scene, where in the original SWAT is just silent. Not only muh diversity for no reason but needless meddling with source material.

      >literally three seconds into the movie
      wrong
      >in English she just boringly says "some interference or something idk"
wrong she says "must be a loose wire" and the subtitle still says "it's my time of the month."

frankly saying "im on my period" literally doesnt make any sense and just feels like bad/lazy writing
we can hear all the interference in the audio so when she says "just a loose wire" we know that thats not the actual reason for the interference and there is something else going on that she isn't telling her team, this clues the audience in that there is something out of the ordinary with this character literally from the very start of the movie.
saying "im on my period" doesnt say convey shit and isnt something this character would say. it sounds like something batou would say to the major, something like "hey major what's with all that interference in your feed, is it that time of the month?" in his usual joking voice.

i LITERALLY just opened the movie and EXACTLY 3 seconds in she does not say anything, in fact there is nothing but text on the screen, so no she did not say anything LITERALLY 3 seconds into the movie and you are indeed wrong.

          >So she still says what I said, and it's doubly badly made
direct quote from your original post "in English she just boringly says "some interference or something idk"
interesting seeing as that is not what she said at all in the english dub. and she didnt say a subtitle, the subtitles are just translations from the japanese script that usually dont even say everything the characters say. so its not doubly badly made, but you are doubly wrong.

Nope, I've actually been here long enough to see that term pop up and to know you're a bullshitting tourist. It's a poor attempt at astroturfing started by anti-anime morons from cripplechan, specifically /intl/. If you were there, you know. Moe wasn't even "a trend" when that term started being forced. Iyashikei ("CGDCT") did trend briefly in the late 2000s, when most of those morons were still shitting their diapers, but by that point moe was already an important part of the industry and domestic fandom for decades, and it would still be several years before "cuck" became the buzzword of choice for meme-spouting newbies.

While we're at it, you might want to refrain from calling yourself (or anyone else) a "weab" unless it's your intention to give away your status as a tourist. I'm not just talking about the misspelling, either.

Dubs used to be routinely terrible but that was a long time ago now. Subs used to be better as a nominal attempt at translation while the dub script would just make things up (c.f., the Magic Roundabout which was just random scripts made up in English to match the visuals and absolute kino compared to what it turns out was going on in French).

This is a very dated concern now and stopped being an issue before most people currently ranting about it were born. GITS was one of the better ones in its era.
