It's not Christian sources though, they're either contemporary or lived a bit later, but I'm sure they were politically influenced anyway.
All the barracks emperors(upstart generals) that kept popping up in the Crisis of the Third Century were the militaries response to what they saw as a corrupt and decadent senatorial/noble class even if most of them were just as bad or worse then what came before.

Gladiator's interesting because it's essentially a reimagining of The Fall of the Roman Empire, a huge hollywood epic and one of the flops that lead to the end of the golden age of hollywood.

Ridley is the obvious choice of director given he's the only hollywood director with a good track record of doing period pieces with large-scale battles.
Gladiator 2 is something the studio has wanted to make for a long time but they could never find a way to make it work satisfactorily. With Ridley wanting a legacy and having this writer he semi-trusts for whatever reason, he's decided now is the time and the studio is always ready to fund it.
