Anno required the mechs to look menacing like Oni, he wanted the fights and the piloting to look threatening and disgusting. He also wanted the characters, specifically the female ones to be repulsive mental wrecks. He was disgusted when he learned that everybody loved it.

From 1.01 to 1.11, I'm not positive but I guess it features some additional little changes, and may itself be marking that it's accompanied by 3.0 (-46h) and 3.0 (-120 min.), though 1.01 was accompanied by (-120 min.), as well.
