Go Wake, Make a Fricking FORTUNE!

“Barbie,” which Gerwig directed and co-wrote, added another $53 million from 4,178 North American locations this weekend and $74 million internationally, bringing its global total to $1.03 billion, according to studio estimates on Sunday. The Margot Robbie-led and produced film has been comfortably seated in first place for three weeks and it’s hardly finished yet. It crossed $400 million domestic and $500 million internationally faster than any other movie at the studio, including the Harry Potter fil

Also the subtext of this film is way less woke once you actually see what it's doing beyond the surface

It's as much Cinemaphile as Transformers or Teenage Midget Turtle Ninja. No one here can accept its success, so they're finding reasons why it can be redefined to not be woke

Anon, those two have had several shows, comics and animated movies. We talk about those, the exception being Transformers. Just accept that you felt like annoying people on a Sunday because not much else is going on in your life.

Barbies' had animated movies and cartoons though.
I didn't find a cartoon, but it did have an animated web series of 72-ish episodes (frick, I just closed the tab, how did I already forget?)

        TMNT started as a comic
Transformers is only discussed for Cinemaphile adaptions like Barbie is

Barbie didn't have any animated adaptions until decades after she debuted. At least Transformers released an animated series during the intial toy run and TMNT was always a comic first. If you want to discuss Barbie on Cinemaphile then bring up Life in the Dream House easily her best adaptation.

bro, real talk, I just saw this with my wife this week at a 10:30pm Thursday showing because every earlier time was sold out this week at three different theaters. Also, it was crowded. I cannot remember the last time a movie was this popular

Endgame was an EVENT though, it had years of build up. No one really cared about this movie outside of the fact Ryan Gosling was starring in it.

We watched it during the premiere and it was the first time my local theatre was packed since the quarantine.

honestly, that was my closest mental comparison but even then we saw that pretty early on without trouble. I don't recall waiting 5 days more than a week after release before giving up on finding an earlier showing and just going at 10:30 in a large metro area.

I haven't seen anybody that's watched it yet. When I bring it up, nobody knows it's currently in the box office.

Wouldn't surprise me if after all the feminist flops, they decided to pile up some money to make one look good.

Lay off the Copium. It's only fake numbers when you don't like the film. Otherwise, you're fine with them, Demand a recount and storm the Capitol next.

When "get woke, go broke" fails them, there are two standard copes they use to explain it. One is to claim Blackrock is throwing millions upon millions of dollars at a complete failure because it had a sufficient amount of gay in it. The other is to claim it wasn't actually woke in the first place, but rather secretly based. They seem to have settled on the latter for this movie, just like they did with Mario. What's important here is that they never admit they were incorrect.

Mariochuds and Kencucks employ very similar tactics. One could argue Mariochuds were desperate to get a win on le woke critics so they switched to painting their movie as some kind of antithesis to Disney.

This is what pretty much happened with the latter. People who say "Go woke, go broke" have an easy out. If it fails, it proves their point. If it succeeds, they try to find a way to say it isn't that woke or it's secretly based and on their side inadvertently.

So is the movie woke or not? What's it even about? I know next to nothing about it.

Why are people calling this movie woke? This is classic 90's feminism. That's actually considered the opposite of modern-day woke since many 90's feminists are called TERFs now.

Woke is changing characters for the sake of diversity. Or pretending Barbie has to be a physically or emotionally strong character in order to be a role model. Or throwing in modern concepts out of the blue for the sake of inclusion where it wasn't needed or missed. If this movie was "woke", our MC would be Indian, there would randomly be a transgender Barbie despite Mattel never making one, and Barbie would NEVER be allowed to cry throughout the whole movie because that's seen as weak.

Instead, this movie sticks as wildly close to the actual designs of every Barbie imaginable and that's what people like-- accurate adaptation. They hate unnecessary change no matter the skin color. Stereotypical Barbie is also a fricking mess and constantly gives into her emotions even going as far as passing the protagonist role to other characters because she can't get out of her depression funk.

To be fair this doesn't undo "go woke go broke" it's an exception to the rule it had an insanely good marketing strategy and dumb luck with the Oppenheimer thing. It had Ryan Gosling in it who automatically puts butts in seats also the trailer basically lied.
