It's worse than that. I let the cursor hover on some Netflix show because I had to do something else. Trailer played for ten seconds before I got back to keep scrolling.
Later I went down the list and found a category "Because you checked out [show you stopped scrolling on]:" so the ign article is literally meaningless, which you should already know.
Tldr: 16M people turned on Netflix and were exposed to the trailer for the featured new show, no stats on how many actually chose to watch it.

They've been doing these bizarre semantic lies for quite awhile now. "checked out" literally means SJWs/paid people put the preview on EVERYONE'S home-screen as a "what's poplar/new now", and the preview auto-playing means you "checked it out"

There's a reason why it's not "x watched, x finished series", it's some bizarre and subjective "checked out" quantifier

            Anonymous

Live-action is just not a good medium for these sprawling child-led media franchises. Harry Potter worked because that series was huge enough to basically enforce non-stop production for ~10 years straight.

Things that aren't surefire bets have to deal with start and stop productions, which allow the kids to age faster IRL than their character is supposed to. The first season of this show wrapped in February. A second season won't realistically start shooting until late next year. That's likely an ~18 month gap any further seasons will also deal with. You might as well cast older from the start.

The secret is that no one watches anything now
There are no fricking "hit shows" anymore
Old fricks remember when there were shows everybody watched, and also remember "sleeper hits" that were often excellent shows with limited audiences that had to fight for every dime of budget and every minute of airtime

Somehow television production is now a billion dollar money hose pointed directly into the trash, an entire Ashcan Industry.

Did you know that Burnham will be the longest running Star Trek captain soon? Her seventh year on television is coming up. The Kenan Thompson of Star Trek (that's a meanspirited SNL reference, for you youngsters)

That's the entire problem, these shows don't have to be watched anymore.
Companies care far more for "engagement metrics" now over actual watch time, that's why all these shitty bait products keep being pushed out, keeps people talking about them, better to have people know about your shitty show, than it being just another terrible show.

And I'm saying this purely from a timeline perspective, not any specific criticism of her, it's like how somehow "Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise" means the same thing for a summer marquis no matter if it's the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s or 2020s and that sure as frick isn't how Movie Stars used to function

Unless STD is going for like 10 years, that wont be the case. Both TNG and Voyager had 7-year runs with one captain. Mike Burnham wasn't the captain until later in STD's run. She wasn't even in the captain's role like Sisko during DS9's early seasons.

Either way "longest serving captain" is moronic since Shatner played Captain Kirk for decades, even outside of nuTrek. And besides nuTrek will just make up "firsts" anyway and treat their pet like she's the first black woman in Star Trek.

Sisko, Uhura and La Forge were popular characters because of their own merits. They had personalities and flaws, and were responsible for their own actions. All the racial commentary was for alien species that the show just made up for that particular episode.

Alien species were often allegories for current issues at the time.

I only watched TNG but I just miss the optimism. While humanity had its drama and downsides at the end of the day it was an ideal society that got past all the modern issues. And they traveled the universe finding a better way to deal with allegories for modern times.

But the federation was mature enough to get past all the petty squabbling and was essentially an ideal society.

the Federation's post-scarcity economy had to collapse because the robotic slaves based on Data's design underpinning it all revolted, even though they apparently had a post-scarcity economy before those slaves were built, and the very idea of building such slaves is both anathema to the morals of the Federation and physically prevented by the events of "Measure of a Man"

The good news is that nuTrek isn't actual Star Trek. It's a licensed spin-off property created in-house by the current owners of the original property. It's recognizably different in look and tone and concept from the original property ON PURPOSE. Basically, they're creating a lame Mass Effect rip-off grab-bag of sci-fi tropes and slapping the "Star Trek" brand on it.

TNG had fantastic morals that make the show timeless.
                >Different cultures have different values and we have to accept that not everyone thinks the same
                >You must accept your flaws and try to use them to your advantage
                >Even when you lose, don't get discouraged or give up. You can't help everyone.

That episode where they visit the species that’s just discovered warp travel was great. It felt very poignant that the president decided to step back from progress because while it might have theoretically been better it was clear the species wasn’t ready to take that step yet.
You shouldn’t ignore the people’s distrust and fear, even if it is born out of ignorance. and it was a good episode that weighed that debate and had a good conclusion I feel would almost always go the opposite direction.

I'm dying to see Paramount's internal metrics. They must see TOS and TNG massively outperforming their new slop they spent hundreds of millions on. Kirk and Picard has such massive cultural impact that people who have never seen a single episode can recognize them, name their actors, and even and even their catchphrases. Nobody recognizes the new casts and they'll be immediately forgotten.

“Go woke go broke” is over memed but genuinely these race swaps and other retcon nonsense are confusing and awkward to any average viewer. HOTD is the only recent media I can think of that’s done this and has been well received, but they may ruin that in coming seasons like the Witcher did (at least the troony casting leak was not true). The box office has been abysmal lately, propped up by capeshit which is also starting to fail. The industry has to pivot to survive but I’ll take years because they need to actually write and produce watchable content that doesn’t make the viewer feel uncomfortable or insulted.

Honestly I think this would be a problem if they’d at least hire attractive minorities.

The woke shit started in the late 90’s and by tge late 2000’s it was becoming visible. 2010 was when all of these race and genderswaps started. 2013 was when it became unbearable and you started to see the line of “get-woke-go-broke” starting to be used.

We are a decade off from that and these studios still have not gone broke.

Paramount, Warner and Disney are just about broke. All three studios can reasonably be gobbled up by tech giants. But All those companies are also corrupted by the mind virus. So nobody is going to swoop in and return your favorite franchise to its glory days.

Disney has disclosed they report watch only if the account has watched 80% of the movie's length, which is pretty reasonable.

Friendly reminder that digital analytics, unlike ticket sales, are propietary and any streaming service can categorize an interaction ("checked out", lol) as literally any unidimensional metric they want, down to people who watched the automatically playing teaser appearing on the front page.

Investors would abandon them immediately if they lied. Netflix even makes their watch-hours public on weekly basis, for example Rebel Moon was watched for 23 million hours last week, which would amount to around 10 million full views.

Movies were more profitable back then so a movie turning a modest profit meant the sequel would get shitcanned in favor of a movie that would likely turn a mega-profit. It wasn't enough to be profitable, it has to be the most profitable. Mega-profits are all but gone, so now a modest profit is enough to get a sequel.

GRRM's worldbuilding is garbage. The more autistic he gets, the worse he gets. He excels at plot and dialog when tasked under certain constraints, which he hasn't been under since the success of his HBO series, which is why the books never got finished and it'll be endless dumb Targshit from now until the end of time.

I love GRRM because he's a fat American and proves that Americans are superior, even sloppy disgusting lazy ones. It took one to make Britain's fanfic because bongs are all hapless cucks. But I'm not gonna pretend he wasn't already doing dumb shit on his own before woke politics forced HBO to make major characters inexplicably black.

HotD so utterly fricked the relationship of the Blacks by making the Velaryons black. Rhaenys and Corlys backed Rhaenyra because they never doubted that Jace, Luke and Joffrey were Laenor's. The show they're explicitly not his, whereas in the show they all have brown hair when both of their parents have white-blonde hair, but Rhaenys' Baratheon blood could be a reason for this hair anomaly. Point is, there's a plausible reason for it, and besides, House Strong is full of blondes, so it's not like Harwyn's hair matches theirs.

On top of that, they completely fricked with Nettles and might cut her from the show (she still hasn't been cast yet) because her uniqueness is completely cut when there's other black-skinned dragonriders in the story. Is she a dragonseed, or did she find another way to bond with a dragon without Valyrian blood, that could give us clues into what might have happened with Quentyn if he's still alive?

the canceled prequel pilot that never saw the light of day even after being filmed for $30 million had this cast and was set during the building of The Wall in the North

yeah and Hollywood accidentally did a huge racism by basically making the story "there used to be black people in Westeros and they all got turned into the white walkers"

Absolutely baffling move in a series which relies so heavily on physiognomy. Everyone’s so interbred that laenor/rharnyea and laena/daemon’s kids should have looked like siblings but for some reason the latter kids are as dark as their mother, even though she is half as dark as her father (because she had a white mother). How did Corlys even get so dark if every other valarian was clearly white? Insulting to the audience to be so autistic about genes then just toss it away.

                >How did Corlys even get so dark if every other valarian was clearly white?
I've been posting this since the show came out, but after what we heard about Project Blood Moon and the Children of the Forest being black, I believe they are toying with the idea of making black people some kind of Drow race in that universe. Not in any over-the-top supernatural way but Blackness™ will be portrayed as a force of nature that persists and re-emerges through the mother's line (similar to Judaism). That's how you can get a mother giving birth to a half-white child that is none the less two shades darker than her. It's why Corlys gave his monologue about his house being older than the Targs and yet he looks no more than one generation removed from sprinting through the Serengeti.

Their blackness is itself magic. Even still, though, the notion that Monke and Alicent can remark that Ser Cristan "must be Dornish" and yet nobody in Westeros notices these genuine Alabama Blue Gum Black folks lurking all over the place just reduces everything to a dishonest farce penned by white women, regardless if they ever explain the black Valayrons

The most important here is that Percy Jackson is shit. It's Greek mythology written for tweens by a tween.

I can't watch the show because I can't take the Velaryons seriously.

There is a Velaryon in the books, a bastard, who looks so much like Rhaegar that Cersei got completely befuddled by him. Rhaegar was meant to be this super hot dude, and the Velaryons in HotD aren't even moderately attractive.

They're basically yes men that chase trends or follow their publishers commands (who are also chasing trends). If you're one that visits book stores regularly you'll see when a new trend drops. Always found it weird that "representation" in the US meant "Black People", because aren't Latinos a bigger ethnic group than Blacks? And yet there aren't as many in media compared to Black people, I think if anyone "deserves" representation in American media it's them, not Blacks.

Also Natives, rarely see them too despite being quite literally the first people in the country, feel like they are more deserving of "representation" than Blacks too.

It just feels like Black people are this "special" ethnic minority, like they are the go-to for looking like you are doing something progressive, they even made a term to highlight Black people because POC was too broad I guess and the other races weren't as oppressed, now we have BIPOC (that includes Natives too but I can count on one hand the number of times it's been used in reference to them, it's 99% used for Black people). Even in media that does include Natives and Latinos, it's the Blacks that are used in advertisements and stuff.

Blacks are the pet of white middle and upper class leftists so of course they're what they mean when they talk about diversity. hispanics really don't give that much of a shit unless they're also middle class and raised in affluent majority white neighborhoods.

Representation and diversity in American media basically only means adding more blacks, gays, and females to content preferably all 3 at once. Latinos and Native Americans are barely acknowledged and Asians are probably more discriminated against than even whites

      Checked.

The United States is a Blackphilic country. This is the place that breaks into riots when the cops kill black career criminal junkies. Sometimes, they don't even have to kill them (see Jacob Blake) to provoke a riot. The news media then goes out of its way to defend and downplay these actions, even coming up with euphemisms ("civil unrest") in an attempt to cover things up. Any black who claims to be the victim of discrimination is given a national platform, even if the complaint is obviously untrue (Jussie, Bubba Wallace, Althea Bernstein, etc.). No other group in the United States gets this treatment.

"Diversity" and "representation" = more blacks makes sense with that in mind. Anyone whining about the lack of "black representation" in American media is at best a liar looking to get their friends work. They make up less than 13% of the country's population and are already vastly disproportionately represented in popular music and sports. If those people are not good enough role models, then that is a reflection of the black community that a couple of fictional blackwashed characters aren't going to fix.

(Baseball's limited popularity compared to far less diverse sports like basketball and football calls into question whether or not "diversity" is even a thing audiences demand.)

It's blacks over all the other nonwhite races in the US because the ones who control us literally worship ugliness and disorderliness. Blacks unfortunately hold the status as the most ugly and disorderly race in the US, and to add to that have a decent sob story to back up their bullshit. Thus we have to be subjected to ugliness in everything now

The media has to be mostly brown for a reason and it's not what you think. It's creating a *future* narrative, not a current one. It's so that everything the elites did, are doing, and will do to shrink the population and enslave/control the rest will appear justified because everyone knows black and brown people can't govern themselves. Everyone knows women and gays are irrational.

They are using media to exaggerate how black/brown/female/gay this time in history was so that it looks plausible to their great, great grandchildren that "of course grandpa Bill Gates had to vax and sterilize billions. It was an act of love".

Why can't right-wingers/conservatives just take losses? What's wrong with them? They're like psychopathic severely egotistical children. Everything they lose in is either a conspiracy, or some kind of cheating. They can never be wrong, nor can their ideas ever be unpopular as far as they're concerned. Do they think this kind of thinking/behavior will lead people to seeing them as sane, likable, and want to vote for them?

You assume everything who hates this kind of shit falls right in to the right wing brigade. I find them just as insufferable as the progressives making this content. Politics don't need to be a part of entertainment media. You wanna make content for blacks cool. Content for whites cool. Every piece of media doesn't need to cater to or appeal to every demographic possible. It's this needlessly changing of things simply for the sake of political correctness that piss me off more than anything. Just make content and let the public at large decide whether or not it's appropriate instead of making that decision for them

If anyone ever truly wonders how bad things can get, I invite you to look at the American comics industry, which now has over twenty years of being fricked into the dirt under its belt
Every series fails, everything flops, everyone is gay, everyone is black, everything new fails even harder, even gayer blue checkmarks are brought in to "correct course" and we're somehow decades into a death spiral where at this point literally 90% of comic sales are Demon Slayer and My Hero Academia, and the response from Marvel and DC's leadership is "clearly we aren't quite progressive enough yet"

      Anonymous

seeing people post pages from modern comics is always fun. the industry basically only makes money from #1s at this point so they just let the writers do literally whatever they want as long as it features the characters the comic is allegedly about and isn't porn

My theory is the companies that own comic publishers figure they wouldn't be very profitable even if they made products that sold well. Comics are a really niche market despite all the self-professed comics nerds, 97% of whom really mean "I like to watch overstimulating movies." However, they can't kill off the comic book and continue the IPs as video games, animated shows, movies, etc. because even though the comics impact is miniscule now, it's important symbolically. It's like if Disney dropped Mickey Mouse. Sure, they've barely used him in anything in decades and no one really identifies themselves as a huge Mickey Mouse fan. But if Disney came out and said they were getting rid of Mickey entirely there'd be a huge outrage. So they're in a bind, they can't get rid of the comics divisions and they can't see a way to make them profitable enough. So they just dump all the diversity hires there and let them run wild.

As to the point about how manga does much better, there's no way for the comics industry to shift to do things how the manga industry does it. I don't know much about either industry, but the distribution model of manga is wildly different. They put out compilation magazines of dozens of series in a single issue (Shonen Jump is running 24 manga series right now!) and they allow cost saving measures like cheaper paper and black and white printing. Meanwhile, American comics are single issues, with glossy pages and full coloring. That probably contributes to how the industry is fundamentally unable to try to ape manga. The medium itself prevents them from having the luxury of trying out a few dozen new titles each year and seeing what works.

        >diversity hire moron containment
        >irrelevant but "iconic" shit like Mickey Mouse
        these are interesting points

        >manga is different
this would have been a better argument a decade ago when it was just "The Japanese market is bigger than the American one", but the crazy thing about my only slightly hyperbolic "90% manga domination" statement is that at this point manga overwhelming dominates the "comic book" market WITHIN the fricking US (apparently the actual number is that Japanese titles are around 75% of US comic sales right now - and more painfully the US comic industry is somehow taking *credit* for success - https://www.businessinsider.com/whats-behind-surge-in-comic-sales-movies-kids-comics-manga-2022-7 )

My point about manga is that the differences in the business model (cheaper production, compilation magazine distribution, etc.) allow them to approach the creation of new IPs with more flexibility which allows the good stuff to take root and grow. Shonen Jump prints on tissue paper and only uses black and white, and when it introduces a new series that series can find its feet while mainstays like One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen can ensure sales are strong. And if the new series never finds its feet, then they can cycle them out more easily because it's less of a sunk cost. Meanwhile most American comics are sold as a single story in a ~30 page book priced at $5 each. If something starts slowly, it's a lot harder for it to gain traction since the sales numbers plummet so sharply. People don't want to spend $20 a month to read a story that won't get good until 4 months into its run.

Comics started believing they were going to be the ones doing storyboarding for future Hollywood projects, all fueled and motivated by woke. Basically, they'd be a govt contractor doing propaganda and compensated through the ESG / DEI schemes imposed by govt.

This was all put into action during the Obama years and got derailed by politics not going the way anyone expected.

When dc & marvel were independent companies they needed to actually sell books to stay in business, now they are both just tiny pieces of much much larger companies so they are basically just ip & idea farms now and selling comics is an afterthought

To be fair, comics just lost and will never recover because nobody even cares to look at them.

They could create a perfect rendition of Superman that appeals to everyone. And not a single person will give a frick because it’s comics and nobody gives a shit about Superman anymore.

      Manga won. End of story.

Movies still have a chance to course correct because people still like movies and shows.

If someone actually created "a perfect rendition of Superman that appeals to everyone" it might go
        >Issue #1: 150,000 copies sold
        >Issue #2: 200,000 copies sold
        etc.

Unlike all current comics which are always inevitably
        >Issue #1: 150,000 copies sold
        >Issue #2: 10,000 copies sold
