Oh, the second actress who played a character for a single season in a series that aired 60 years ago was black, I see.

The difference is the time that happened was long before the current sentiment of intentionally changing the race of characters for social justice points, and since then the character was consistently portrayed as white until her most recent adaptation. Most of the braindead morons who throw a fit about characters being portrayed as their original race after someone decides to change it have no idea that the Eartha Kitt version ever existed. Talk to me if we see a movie version of her that's not black now that The Batman exists.

Like if you'd just shown that whole sheet of character designs to 100 random people before this film ever had any trailers released, do they honestly believe that a single person would have guessed who it was supposed to be?

              Anonymous

I guess it's surface level understanding of the character or at least reducing her down to, "female human friend they trust and yellow." Though to be honest I was never as huge a fan of April, but in particular the 90's film iterations were probably my favorite. Likely because of the way she drove the story was pivotal without taking focus completely away from the turtles.

I wouldn’t have nearly as much of an issue with race swapping if they didn’t go out of their way to pick the ugliest actors or character designs. They could have picked an attractive black actress to play Ariel in Mermaid, but instead they chose a woman with a cow face. They could have made an attractive character design for a black April, but instead they chose a design that looks as appealing as cat sick.

Stuff like the Little Mermaid remake always do poorly outside of USA because people in LatAm, Asia and some European countries are less PC and don't fear getting "cancelled" and shit so they just make fun of the character's looks and don't waste money to see it

      >The little mermaid remake didn’t do as well as Disney wanted, but it still made money

I really doubt it has. The only reason that movie wasn't a total disaster is because Americans worship blacks (see Spiderverse). The problem is that audience didn't really show up in great enough numbers early on. The longer a movie is in theatres, the larger the cut of the gross goes back to the cinema chains. This is the same reason Elemental won't be profitable theatircally.

I kinda like the style itself and that it looks "drawn" and I don't have an issue with reinterpretations or black April, I enjoyed the sakuga cartoon TMNT Rise a lot, but the humor and personalities from the trailer seem like a red flag and turn me off. TMNT Rise and other series also had them being wacky, but here it just looks like loud ADHD kids from tiktok and I cannot stand that shit and have to restrain myself from punching people whenever I met such creatures in the subway, so sadly I will skip this.

Not a fan of April's design either. Think that the black April from Rise was pretty, but the one here reminds me too much of online people I have bad memories of and her proportions seem fricked. Would still watch it maybe if it wasn't for this awful zoomer meme characters.

TMNT classics has been a big hit in the collectors market following the failure of RISE. The parent company saw this and is pushing with it including the new movie. They've been hanind out licenses for the TMNT classic style to pretty much everybody since rise was so bad at selling any merch. Now the nostalgia tug is spreading even to non-collectors and onto families with their own kids at the ages they remember seeing the TMNT boom of the 90s. Even the 2012 or 2003 series wasn't as widespread as we have TMNT right now. Viacom is striking when the iron is hot and riding it out until the last drop of milk.

Having seen the movie, it doesn't have the legs to stay.
Blue Beetle is only next week, which is going to eat a lot of attention from it, which isn't saying much since that will flop too but I digress, and this won't be an Elemental situation which was released relatively close to the start of Summer, where as TMNT was released near the end, parents won't be focused on going to the movies, instead they'll be buying school supplies, which are starting to open again.

Plus, it's already confirmed for a digital streaming date in less than a month, on September 5th, which gives parents or anymone even LESS reason to go out and see it. This movie had one chance of making an impression it's opening weekend and it didn'twork

Making 51 million on the first weekend for a 70 million budget movie is pretty good start. Not a flop. Not underperforming either.

It made less than the original one with the puppets that was released in the 90's

It had a small budget, and likely make it back, but I don't think it'll do much beyond that. Which I imagine will be a far cry from what Nick and Paramount hoped.

        $70 million budget + $70 million marketing = $140 million

Theatres take half the revenue so it needs to make $280 million to break even.

        Only $229 million to go.

        >b***h when other artists want to draw in a way that doesn’t get your dick hard?
Idkw homosexuals always latch onto the beauty = sexual attraction shtick as I wouldn't even mind if they uses her 2012 design here. April 2012 doesn't really get my dick hard the same way 80s do anyway. She just comes as a normal cute girl much like one you see from Inspector Gadget. Turning April into a child seems like a personal choice while not everyone agrees with in their own right isn't as egregious as later making her black and then fat. Black/Fat April just comes off as conformist from execs mandating it and if there's any rejection towards it you'll be treated as a social pariah and called a racist which is so typical in their playbook. This shit is always a "rules for thee, never for me" situation when they never comply to any else demands and wanna enforce their crap onto others with social pressure/contagion. I bet that one day the TMNT creators will confirm April was always black despite the mountain of evidence behind that claim being bs but will do so anyways because they don't wanna be ostracized and have to perform history revisionist to appease that crowd. See this is what I mean when I wish more creators/people had more of a backbone against this shit. I've watched the movie, I'm black, and I can smell the bullshit from here.

They wanted a billion dollar success. Something that emptied toy store shelves and revived turtlemania. Don't forget they already greenlit 2 seasons of a cartoon and plan to make several more tie-in movies. A tepid opening that barely breaks even in a few more months (once you account for advertising, merchandising, and everything else they spent to hype this shit up) is more of a liability than a success.

    >BU-B-BUT BEAUTY IS SUBJECTIVE!!!!!!
Bullshit. Beauty is an objective concept. Take a Japanese man to see the Taj Mahal and he'll say it's beautiful. Take an American man to the Sistine Chapel and he'll say it's beautiful. Take a French man to the Grand Canyon and he'll say it's beautiful. Hedge cases don't count, most anyone you'll meet can recognize beauty as soon as they see it. Beauty is so easily recognized even small children and animals can recognize it. Beautiful people are objectively so and it's readily apparent. Sure, cultural trends and personal tastes play a part but there's plenty of overlap across the board. TL;DR: No, you're not a "Rubenesque" girl born in the wrong time, your BMI is the same as a killer whale's and it's been weeks since your last shower. Maybe hit the gym and stop eating so much cake instead of sending death threats to fan artists on tumblr. You fat ugly moron.

It's probably unintentional, but the film seemed very UNWOKE to me. April was evil, ugly, fat journalist but in the Mutant Mayhem world all human beings are horribly ugly.
The villain was a black fly with an afro who spoke in ebonics who was obsessed with revenge and oppression like Tariq Nasneed and the heroes learned that they didn't have to follow him.
The moral was how instead of hating people for not accepting you you should actually be a good person and develop your skills.

Even though it has a low production cost, $51m is pretty bad for a start. Not impossible since even Elemental had strong holds from word-of-mouth even though that one didn't technically break even. They need a little under $200m to cover production cost and possible marketing cost. Let's say they at least get over $200m and it did fine at least.

I think the most depressing thing about this whole fricking shitshow isn't that people worked hard and it failed or that they browngraded another ginger. It's that they will keep letting Seth Rogen make awful shows and movies because they only made this shit in the first place to reinvigorate their brand rights. Viacom/Paramount/Nick had deals to sell merch and make a certain amount of profit off the TMNT IP and this shit was just an expensive placeholder to keep people talking about the turtles again. They just need SOMETHING, anything, on TV and being discussed so they can hype up their new wave of classic 87' era TMNT merch. The Minecraft Crossover, the SF6 crossover, the inevitable Fortnite crossover.

So as long as people are excited to buy the nostalgic turtles merch, Mutant Mayhem will keep getting sequels and cartoons pumped out while they find new places to sell more TMNT 87' merch.

Been saying something similar for a while. Kids don't need action figures now that there are games that have become endless, constantly updating, constantly crossed-over toyboxes that replace action figures and collectibles in every possible way. Not like the crossover stuff for Minecraft, Roblox, and Fortnite won't make the studio even more money anyways.
