Old guy here. You're not wrong.
Watchmen was the comic for snobs. The kind of fans that we'd now call "basement dwellers" or "autists" or whatever.
But TDKR was the comic that sold to the mainstream. The word of mouth on it was INSANE. It was probably the last time that the industry attracted any new readers. People who had never been to a LCS went it just to get it. It was the last time that American comics were COOL.
My dad had both
Watchmen is written at a sixth grade reading level, are people just that dumb?
1986 was a very good year.
Yes, but the guy you replied to is an autist.
You are moronic.
You are beyond moronic.
There are too many panels and too many words and it's written like an hour long episodes generic american drama show that thinks just showing people do normal shit is deep. Watchmen is the comic version of that Chainsaw Man anime scene where the guy smokes a cig for a full minute.
Imagine experiencing fiction as formless blobs like this.
Instead of engaging in reverse snobbery, some of us liked them both.
generic drawings of cars, and to save time and NOT draw the actual cars on the street in 3D which would have been too time consuming, Frank fills the rest of the page with talking heads.
Plus the inking by Klaus whats his name is SO bad, it in facts ruins Frank's line which Im sure was much better.
https://boards.Cinemaphile/co/thread/143135995eVerdict: only a 12 yo American nerd would be impressed by this.
I'll have you know Frank uses the finest Franklin Mint car models
they DO look like toy model cars, dont they? And another thing, Frank boasts how he goes on rooftops and sketches them, yet his rooftops are just your ordinary generic rooftops. And in silhouette too. Saving time by cutting corners anywhere he can.
I'm sure he went on rooftops but it's not like you could go on every rooftop in the city, so he just got really good at drawing the one rooftop view outside his apartment.
>it in facts ruins Frank's line which Im sure was much better
until this part i thought it was not a bait
if you had bothered to read about it, Klaus's inking on issue 3 was SO HORRIBLE, Frank had a big argument with him and almost kicked him off the book.
No, I just have good taste. Frank ain't it. But if it helps you sleep at night to attack the messenger instead of the massage, go right ahead.
What’s your problem with Frank?
it blew mine. just compare it to other batman books at the time to understand why.
Damn, Cinemaphile hates good comics.
It's just a few bad apples.
It's not uncommon. The most notable experts in any field always have distorted views on them compared to their intended audiences. It's inevitable, the context for what makes a thing good can't withstand dozens of times more content without mutating into something paradoxical and self-referential.
A good point, but more likely is: anons whose entire identity is being contrarian to each and everything, in order to fill the void left by their lack of personality or ability for positive enthusiasm, have decided to be contrarian about something once again!
Is it possible to have a similar resurgence in modern comics, say, with Image or manga or something? Like something actually and noticeably good, unlike the usually popular cape or battleshonen slop?
No.
