They specifically transitioned to LCS distribution in the 80s because newsstands and magazines racks at supermarkets didn’t sell as well where it cost an arm and a leg and get a good spot as well as stack, plus they were required to buy back everything that wasn’t sold or damaged.
So basically you have to be competitive with magazines that have standards, and if your product isn't good, the supermarketes won't hold onto it and you eat the price for your subpar production. I can see how both of these are negatives to Marvel and DC
