Talk about the comics, the Hanna Babera or 1998 cartoon, or just the kaiju in general. Thoughts on the Godzilla/King Kong meet Justice League crossover?

He could surely communicate, but I don't think he could control Godzilla. The current Legendary version oversees the equilibrium of the entire planet, not just the seas. He probably has enough pedigree to be immune to Arthur's mind control

Meanwhile trying to mind-link with Shin Godzilla would probably be disastrous. Imagine trying to communicate with something that is in constant pain and fueled by sheer rage.

I don't think whoever owns Gamera (Kadokawa I think?) is as precious with it as Toei is with Kamen Rider. Dark Horse did do some Gamera stuff back in the day, but that's practically ancient history now.

It occurs to me; could Aquaman, even temporarily, control or communicate with Godzilla since he's aquatic in origin? At the very least Arthur should be summoning Topo for an assist

      Control? Don't know. Converse? Probably.

Godzilla 1984 showed that a flock of birds could be enough to distract/lure Godzilla, though that's not quite on par with getting a whole mind link.

Basically what we're getting at here is trying to deal, not defeat mind you, Godzilla requires nearly the entire Justice League. If you want to establish communication or understand him, you need Aquaman and Bwana Beast. Study his radiation? You're going to need to call in all the brains for that one.

All I know is that I'm going to be disappointed if King Ghidorah doesn't show up, or if Giganta doesn't get in on the monster fighting

Never seen any of the films. I've seen people say the first film is genuinely very good and the same about Shin Godzilla and the newest one. I know there have been large breaks between movies at times and they have gotten very campy before, but do they get completely silly from the first sequel onwards, or are they hit or miss generally?

      Anonymous

I'll keep this short, but basically right from the first sequel there have been elements of camp, with Godzilla fighting another monster, but still allusions to WWII and kamikaze pilots.
Basically Godzilla has been around a long time, so there's fluctuating and intermingling camp and seriousness. Try the very first one and/or Minus One on for size.

Godzilla is a cultural icon that can be a lot of things depending on the film. The original was a representation of the dangers of atomic science and western aggression post Hiroshima. In a lot of films Godzilla is treated as a walking natural disaster, a force of nature we all have to deal with and be humbled by. In some films he's a protagonist or unlikely alley lesser of two evils. Sure you get some silly stuff like in Megalon or Mechagodzilla, but he's a character that's undergone multiple incarnations for the sake of entertainment.

Thanks. I'm sure if I enjoy them I'll try to watch them all to get a better idea, but probably only keep my favorites on my hard drive.

The "Godzillaverse" of Toho actually has a lot of monsters with their own film before ever meeting Godzilla, such as Rodan and Mothra for example.

The Legendary film, sequel to the 2014 movie King of The Monsters, is pure Godzilla fanservice. Given how each monster is a separate IP, Legendary Pictures had to basically rent each monster individually from Toho. But man, what a ride that was

I thought the first one they made didn't look too bad, but never got a chance to saw it. The sequel using actors from Stranger Things was a bit much and the King Kong ones looked extra silly. I've heard people enjoyed them but it seems like the tone changes too much for the same contained set of films.

Mothra's fantasy elements are crucial to the character. Frankly with how off the rails Monsterverse has gotten now, it's pathetic that the closest thing to fairies are "This human family that keeps producing twin sisters works for Monarch" and putting a fairy civilization inside Hollow Earth should be their biggest priority whenever they bring Mothra back.

she supported a trilogy and had a solo movie before fighting Godzilla, so yeah. I'd lean into the fable aspect of the first movie along witht he archaeology theme of the Heisei Vs movie. Have adventures in the ruins of lost kingdoms and encountering kaiju

Supposedly hot take but King of the monsters was better than GvK, the only difference is viewers changed their expectations. The Millie Bobby Brown plot line in GvK was atrocious. The little girl was fine, seems like she’ll have a bigger role in New Empire. As a lot of people pointed out with the new trailer the monsterverse has become awfully marvely. The difference between the first 2 movies and GvK/GxK is like Pacfic Rim 1 and 2. I don’t really mind it I guess but they need to do better with the human storylines.

      Anonymous

That ain't a hot take I agree with you completely. GvK was some popcorn fun but it didn't move me like KOTM did. And honestly, it wasn't even the humans' storyline that did it for me there. Watching it in IMAX I genuinely felt like the monsters had their own storyline, and I was actually invested in that. It had the appropriate level of human story for a Godzilla movie, but what was important, for me, was the monsters were appropriately set up and utilized. Ghidorah felt like a legitimate threat, Rodan was a fricking butthole, Mothra felt like a fricking goddess of the earth, and Godzilla felt like a grumpy old man dragged back out of retirement. There was a bit of that in GVK but it felt counter to what we saw in KOTM.

I know the comics go out of their way to try and tie the threads together but at the time, without any of that, watching GVK it just felt like Godzilla had turned into a prick and I legitimately thought he'd just gone and killed all the other monsters and that really colored my impression of the movie, they don't do much to make you think otherwise they just say he "beat" them all and paint it like he's being brutal all of a sudden. It felt like it was negating KOTM. And I'll just be honest I never really cared that much about Kong to begin with. He's kinda cool but eeehhh.

You're 100% right about Pacific Rim and that's my biggest fear here - they're submitting to the "we have to make them faster" thing. Like, no you stupid motherfrickers they're goddamn enormous, they should move slow and feel heavy. That's what I don't like about this push toward the hollow earth stuff, we'll have fast moving monsters in alien landscapes with absolutely no sense of proper scale.

One of best animated adaptations. I hope in a future we can see the designs from this series used again.
Even if they are just comics or toys.
