How unfortunate. It was all regular people where I saw it, we don't have very many of those around here.

This was like 4 scenes before he says that so it was just WORDS WORDS WORDS and the actor being all needlessly anime and dramatic.

The main guy overacts a few times as well, but it's held together by the script. A failed kamikaze pilot with a deathwish is automatically gold

Art isn’t literal brainlet . We represent internal intangible things with external factors we can interact with.

Dragons are not just big lizards, they are our desire to contend with big lizards.

ie. The writers were in complete control of when Godzilla would go away, the pilot didn’t have to have anything to do with it, but they made the killing blow be exactly the thing that pilot couldn’t previously do.

It's more critical of Empirical Japan, but in larping as an anti-war movie, it completely dodges Japan's war crimes. When they question the point of doing kamikaze attacks when they've already lost, they never question the validity of the empire's actions. i.e., if Japan had been winning, sacrificing yourself would be justified, despite the rape of Nanking

And before you say no Japanese Godzilla movie is gonna touch that, know that GMK did.

You can tell it played too safe on that. The movie is showing progress on Japan realizing it was batshit insane during WW2, but it still has long ways to go before you see a future PM saying sorry for their warcrimes. Japanese Ultranationalists are an interesting breed

They say sorry all the time, probably too much. You want them to instrumentalise themselves to an idol of shame they are forced to bow down and worship and sacrifice themselves to, much like Imperial Japan demanded they instrumentalise themselves to the war aims of the empire. Human life is not an instrument of idols, human flourishing can not take place by devotion to false gods, be they shame or empire. Life and living are the only good.

but then why can't they can't stop making movies about how they were victimized by big evil monsters in the war? you can't have it both ways.

Because they were victimised by big evil war monsters, their country was fire and nuclear bombed into ashes. That is their historical experience and how their contemporary nation was born. That will always be Japan's national story.

Genuine Source? Every time I hear anything warcrime-related about Japan, it's usually something about historical revision from the far more conservative Japanese.

Japan defeats Godzilla-America by foregoing state militarism and forming a civic humanist society, the enterprise to defeat Godzilla in the movie is that transformation. Godzilla proper is American millitarism, by surrendering old Nippon you no longer face the wroth of Godzilla-America the unstoppable millitary leviathan.

I think that's what makes it an effective movie though. Because the radiation from Fukushima did significant damage to the marine ecosystem in the Pacific and off the coast of Japan. Godzilla being a disgusting and strange mutant abomination far above the level of mutation of "normal" Godzilla hammers the point home better than if he were just the usual giant lizard. When he constantly changes throughout the movie in seemingly agonizing and grotesque ways, you see the real damage nuclear waste can do rather than the more comic book logic of the traditional Godzilla mutation.

Korean and Chinese narratives aren't interesting, let them make their own movies about themselves if they want. A Japanese film about the Japanese experience of their own war suffering is interesting to the greater world because of the depth and feeling of the Japanese character. No body wants to watch an abbatoir recording about mistreated animals at the slaughterhouse, no matter how sorry you feel for the poor creatures. What interesting things could Korea and China possible tell about themselves, "the master hit me again today"?

Germany can create movies in which Germans are portrayed as the clear source of their own suffering, but israelitepan lives in perpetual victimhood. They're a nation of pedophiles because they're all manchildren.

Japan is basically the same as modern native American reservations. No accountability for their own problems, just whining and shifting blame and begging for money. And certainly no effort made to fix any of their issues themselves no matter how much aid and assistance is made available to them. Infantilized societies that can't take care of themselves after decades/centuries spent expecting others to do it for them. They really are just Asian Israel come to think of it.

The source of Japanese suffring is them losing to the leviathan that is America, the blame in the film begins at the start when the loss is apportioned to the soldiers cowardice. The movie goes on the apportion blame to the governments (and really national characters) duplicity and lying, and the instrumentalisation of their men as disposable toy soldiers, which is the premise that Imperial Japan began and fought WW2 by throwing its men into battlefield trash heaps. True it doesn't tell the narrative of how the same instrumentalisation of human life was more brutally applied to the people they conquered, but it is the same fault criticised when it begans at home with the first instrument-victims to imperium and the war machine are the Japanese soldiers sent to war.

No, the source of Japan's suffering is starting the war at all. You don't get to hit and cry when you get hit.

It's anti-American in broad strokes, generally trying to say that Japan didn't deserve to be nuked or that the war wasn't their fault. It works overtime at trying to "pass the buck" and present a dindu nuffin view of the Japanese during that time. But is more propaganda aimed at a Japanese audience than anyone else in my opinion. You need the context or their own politics to see the perspective it takes. It doesn't really concern the rest of us.

There is nothing to suggest Japanese innocence or facing an injustice, merely the Japanese humanity in their suffering during and after WW2. The primary reason Japan turns inward in the aftermarth of WW2 is because they were occupied, their news censored, and were literally unable to travel and leave the island until 1952. Their collective memory of the war and its aftermarth is their own suffering, not the naratives of others.

            Anonymous

And their suffering was caused by themselves. The villain is their own government. They fired the nukes themselves.

              Anonymous

And none of that changes their experience of their suffering. They still suffer, they still have the duty to rebuild and to live and to flourish. All of this "rub their noses in it" stuff is petty sadism especially by people so far removed from it. If you want to revel in being an eternal victim of Japanese warcrimes and forever punish the Japanese before an idol of shame then Japan is correct to view you as the living monster. The vital energies of life should not be subtracted and wasted away on shame and idolatry, life is not something to squander away as a burnt offering to dead idols of shame.

Singular Point isn't good. But Godzilla Earth is so bad that it looks like a masterpiece in comparison. Both suck for different reasons, but Singular Point is definitely not at the bottom like the anime trilogy. Ultimately both were a waste of time and not worth watching.

Well, yeah, that's what I'm getting at. The CGI and animation in Minus One are truly abysmal. I appreciate the intent that they wanted it to look slow and cumbersome like a guy in a suit, and for a remake of the 1954 film that's not a bad idea, but it definitely didn't work out that well. The way he walked was so robotic and stupid, it's hard to take it seriously. Especially with how seriously the story takes itself and how much of a k-drama it comes off as.

It's too performative and manipulative like k-dramas, trying way too hard to be "emotional" while not feeling like they understood human emotion to begin with.

Definitely more of an 8/10 movie IMO. Like many have said, Noriko living was kinda lame and the ejector seat thing was kinda dampened things. I did like how the Tachibana forgave Shikishima by installing the seat for him but I still think he should have one of the mains should have died. Movie could have been a bit shorter too IMO.

I'm an OG fan, and I think it's more due to the fact we haven't had a truly serious Toho Godzilla film in a while (Godzilla in general really), that harkens back to '54 vibes. It's definitely a solid film, but maybe once the honeymoon is over you'll see less "It's genuinely one of the best movies I've seen" and more "Yeah, that's like a Top 5 Godzilla movie for Godzilla standards".

Yeah and it's a pretty hard divide. A lot of people just didn't get what the subtext of the human plot was about and just wanted mindless MONSTER SMASH(like legendary goyslop).

Shin is good in-that it updates the nuclear allegory of the original '54 film to be about the Japanese government's (lack of) response to the Fukushima disaster, I just wish it didn't feel the need to make Godzilla unrecognizable in the process.

What took me away from Shin was its use of Showa / Heisei area sounds. They had a huge opportunity to make some original sounds for Godzilla but played it too safe.

                Anonymous

I can't argue with that, I agree. Same issue with Minus One to be honest. The use of the original theme felt wildly out of place to me in this movie. But yeah, Shin especially should have had a fresh spin to his classic roars to go along with his very different appearance. Both American Godzillas understood that assignment, I don't know why Toho doesn't.

The original theme with Godzilla's attack in Ginza felt like fanboy pandering, but I did like Suite III in the final act. The original tracks for Minus One are amazing.

Nothingburger about a nothingburger. WW2, the downfall of Imperial Japan, and the rebirth of modern Japan from the ashes, are far greater and more interesting themes. WW2 is the world-historic event that determines the ground of the modern world to this day, govenment policy around Fukushima is local news trivia.

You merely want you're own Korean/Chinese narratives centred in a Japanese film. Lose the arrogence, this is a Japanese film about Japan with Japan at centre. If you can't extend your humanity to them then move on to something else, you have no ears or eyes for art.

no, you can simply portray japan as rotting from the inside. they caused everything themselves. the evil one isn't an abstract like war, or a larger outside enemy that they can't even name. an interesting japanese movie about ww2 would depict a country rotting from the inside, with a totalitarian government forcing its population into a war they started. the real villain in a japanese movie about ww2 is japan. every bomb that fell on their territory, from the firebombing of tokyo to hiroshima and nagasaki, is on them. they might as well have pressed the detonators themselves.

Shin Godzilla is pretty much the same thing, just leaning more towards being weird and "scary" with its bizarre mutant Godzilla. It was still a serious story and modern retelling of the original Godzilla, but slightly more original for its weirdness. Minus One is basically The Force Awakens: Godzilla Edition, a shameless rehash of the first movie with some shot for shot remake scenes.

            >shameless rehash
*a better version of the only good Godzilla movie. The original Godzilla still had the heroic scientist commit suicide and throw his life away to defeat the monster, a regression to Shinto-Stoic values of instrumental and disposable individual lives. Only Minus One embraces Christ and the Kantian-Christian affirmation of life as end not means.

I'd give it a 6 tops, maybe a 5. Anything higher is just delusional. It wasn't good and basically wasn't a Godzilla movie. Nothing wrong with the story they wanted to tell, but the movie is exactly the same if you just take Godzilla out entirely. The plot and events don't change.

Having Shikishima kamikaze himself would have directly undermined one of the key themes of his arc. He spent the whole movie feeling guilty, wanting to die, because that's what his country expected him to do even though his death would have made zero difference. His country never valued his life, and so neither did he. Him choosing to live is a repudiation of that mindset, a refusal to callously sacrifice the lives of good men for no reason when better alternatives exist. The risk was still there, but their deaths were not necessary.

I'm starting to think the schizo anon spamming and accusing everyone of shilling is actually the real shill because he's keeping this thread on page 1.

I'm okay with this. We can ignore the schizo and have comfy discussions with everyone else.

Honestly can't help but feel it would have been much more compelling if Godzilla wasn't there

Completely destroyed me. Gripping and emotional Godzilla movie. I cared a lot about the flawed and broken post wwii Japanese heroes of this movie.

"Monsters are tragic beings. They are born too tall, too strong, too heavy, they are not evil by choice. That is their tragedy. They do not attack people because they want to, but because of their size and strength, mankind has no other choice but to defend himself. After several stories such as this, people end up having a kind of affection for the monsters. They end up caring about them."

Friendlt reminder that the nukes were fully justified because they saved hundreds of American soldier lives. The American military has no responsability towards Japan, and if an opportunity to save just one of their soldiers at the cost of no American lives they must always take it. If Japan didn't want to get bombed maybe they should've surrendered. Or better yet, never started a war on conquest.

The US didn't do it to spare the lives of the troops, they did it to save money and end a costly war of attrition against a stubbornly dug in opponent that could not otherwise be defeated or subjugated. No invasion of the Japanese mainland would ever have succeeded anyway. Both the US and Japanese soldiers were indefensibly brutal to each other and various innocent civilian populations on the various islands they occupied and fought over. The nukes were not justified but Japan is also not justified acting like they weren't the aggressor to begin with.

War isn't binary like what people are saying in this thread.

It's just the schizo trying a different route to derail and troll. It's keeping the thread bumped so others can see it got an extension so there's a silver lining there.

The nukes were justified 100% because they were the only way to get an unconditional surrender. Everyone loved the nukes, anyway. Japan gets to act like a victm forever, and America prevented them from going Soviet. Win-win.
