It's anti-American in broad strokes, generally trying to say that Japan didn't deserve to be nuked or that the war wasn't their fault. You need the context or their own politics to see the perspective it takes. It doesn't really concern the rest of us.

If you go in thinking "This had better be the best giant lizard film ever" you'll come out thinking "Idk I guess maybe? It was good but had some flaws."

It was a treat seeing how close in design it was to the Heisei era Godzilla, with cooler, spikier spines, but also enjoyed how they brought him back to the original tone of the Godzilla franchise. First movie I've seen in theaters in like two years, and was an awesome comeback experience.

Singular Point isn't good. But Godzilla Earth is so bad that it looks like a masterpiece in comparison. Both suck for different reasons, but Singular Point is definitely not at the bottom like the anime trilogy. Ultimately both were a waste of time and not worth watching.

Well, yeah, that's what I'm getting at. The CGI and animation in Minus One are truly abysmal. I appreciate the intent that they wanted it to look slow and cumbersome like a guy in a suit, and for a remake of the 1954 film that's not a bad idea, but it definitely didn't work out that well. The way he walked was so robotic and stupid, it's hard to take it seriously. Especially with how seriously the story takes itself and how much of a k-drama it comes off as.

She won't. It's not sad. And the over the top Japanese "emoting" and characters crying at every little thing is extremely hard to take seriously or connect with emotionally. It's too performative and manipulative like k-dramas, trying way too hard to be "emotional" while not feeling like they understood human emotion to begin with.

Definitely more of an 8/10 movie IMO. Like many have said, Noriko living was kinda lame and the ejector seat thing was kinda dampened things. I did like how the Tachibana forgave Shikishima by installing the seat for him but I still think he should have one of the mains should have died. Movie could have been a bit shorter too IMO.
try 4/10 and we're being generous because atleast it had no black people and they didn't make zilla a troony like in that other one

I'm an OG fan, and I think it's more due to the fact we haven't had a truly serious Toho Godzilla film in a while (Godzilla in general really), that harkens back to '54 vibes. It's definitely a solid film, but maybe once the honeymoon is over you'll see less "It's genuinely one of the best movies I've seen" and more "Yeah, that's like a Top 5 Godzilla movie for Godzilla standards".
Shin was a smarter, better looking movie with actual themes and it's not even 10 years old.

Yeah and it's a pretty hard divide. A lot of people just didn't get what the subtext of the human plot was about and just wanted mindless MONSTER SMASH(like legendary goyslop).
Shin is good in-that it updates the nuclear allegory of the original '54 film to be about the Japanese government's (lack of) response to the Fukushima disaster, I just wish it didn't feel the need to make Godzilla unrecognizable in the process.

I think that's what makes it an effective movie though. Because the radiation from Fukushima did significant damage to the marine ecosystem in the Pacific and off the coast of Japan. Godzilla being a disgusting and strange mutant abomination far above the level of mutation of "normal" Godzilla hammers the point home better than if he were just the usual giant lizard. When he constantly changes throughout the movie in seemingly agonizing and grotesque ways, you see the real damage nuclear waste can do rather than the more comic book logic of the traditional Godzilla mutation.
What took me away from Shin was its use of Showa / Heisei area sounds. They had a huge opportunity to make some original sounds for Godzilla but played it too safe.
I can't argue with that, I agree. Same issue with Minus One to be honest. The use of the original theme felt wildly out of place to me in this movie. But yeah, Shin especially should have had a fresh spin to his classic roars to go along with his very different appearance. Both American Godzillas understood that assignment, I don't know why Toho doesn't.
The original theme with Godzilla's attack in Ginza felt like fanboy pandering, but I did like Suite III in the final act. The original tracks for Minus One are amazing.

Nothingburger about a nothingburger. WW2, the downfall of Imperial Japan, and the rebirth of modern Japan from the ashes, are far greater and more interesting themes. WW2 is the world-historic event that determines the ground of the modern world to this day, govenment policy around Fukushima is local news trivia.

Shin Godzilla is pretty much the same thing, just leaning more towards being weird and "scary" with its bizarre mutant Godzilla. It was still a serious story and modern retelling of the original Godzilla, but slightly more original for its weirdness. Minus One is basically The Force Awakens: Godzilla Edition, a shameless rehash of the first movie with some shot for shot remake scenes.

I'd give it a 6 tops, maybe a 5. Anything higher is just delusional. It wasn't good and basically wasn't a Godzilla movie. Nothing wrong with the story they wanted to tell, but the movie is exactly the same if you just take Godzilla out entirely. The plot and events don't change.

Having Shikishima kamikaze himself would have directly undermined one of the key themes of his arc. He spent the whole movie feeling guilty, wanting to die, because that's what his country expected him to do even though his death would have made zero difference. His country never valued his life, and so neither did he. Him choosing to live is a repudiation of that mindset, a refusal to callously sacrifice the lives of good men for no reason when better alternatives exist. The risk was still there, but their deaths were not necessary.
Stop saying Noriko living was lame. It was the whole theme of the movie.

Yeah. Godzilla has never died before in the movies. It's also known for having a very hard established canon and doesn't just take on the flavor of whoever directs it. Being able to be versatile in both kaiju slapfights and corny or more metaphorical conflicts and deeper stories.

Friendlt reminder that the nukes were fully justified because they saved hundreds of American soldier lives. The American military has no responsability towards Japan, and if an opportunity to save just one of their soldiers at the cost of no American lives they must always take it. If Japan didn't want to get bombed maybe they should've surrendered. Or better yet, never started a war on conquest.
The US didn't do it to spare the lives of the troops, they did it to save money and end a costly war of attrition against a stubbornly dug in opponent that could not otherwise be defeated or subjugated. No invasion of the Japanese mainland would ever have succeeded anyway. Both the US and Japanese soldiers were indefensibly brutal to each other and various innocent civilian populations on the various islands they occupied and fought over. The nukes were not justified but Japan is also not justified acting like they weren't the aggressor to begin with.
War isn't binary like what people are saying in this thread.
