Because you have famous actors that get paid in the double digit million range for close-ups while otherwise being replace by doubles, either real or CGI.

Somehow every redditor and 17 year old know in detail about this perpetual Hollywood money laundering but the IRS is completely oblivious to it. Hilarious

take a moment to appreciate the themes of life in the film. where the protagonist is constantly running from death. such as there is a rampant problem with suicide in Japan, when it comes to males. the protagonist in this film is constantly hated for not giving his life to be a kamikaze pilot. towards the end of the film he was given the right to live by the ones whom hated him. its a beautiful story far beyond the capacity of Hollywood to take a stand for. ant that is modern men.

part of why shin godzilla was so good is its legitimately one of the only times he's been intimidating. half the time he's kawaii tbh~

Shin doesn't look intimidating, it just looks stupid. By far the worst Godzilla design so far.

The ironic thing is that shin godzilla for me was the most victim'd godzilla and looked like a radiation cancer victim if nothing else. His theme song literally gets me to tears sometimes. A shame that human characters in the movie were so damn dull.

The scenes when he was in the water was probably the scariest in any godzilla movie and I get that it was supposed to be a reference to JAWS. He's not as scary on land though.

Watching Minus One's hammy acting actually changed my mind on Shin Godzilla's actors. They almost feel naturalistic compared to the new film. It feels like Minus One at times is meant to be a throw back to the 50s style melodrama, but those never had protagonists that whimpered like anime characters the way he does in the final scene.

remember that befor eMinus 1 got released in japan there was a lot of speculation about how godzilla was gonna play the tragedy angle, and it turn out that was misinformation and that godzilla is not portrayed as a victim but a ruthless jerk and people complained about the fake leaks, including the idea of Godzilla Bros.

200M is a standard Hollywood blockbuster budget. The more recent ones that went quite a bit over that like Mission Impossible (290M) and Indiana Jones (300M+) were because of being shot during covid and in IJ case because Harrison Ford got injured and the production had to stop.

This. Plus, every time you turn around, they always say they lost money on movies; even hugely successful ones. Think of how many medical procedures for children you could pay for with but one Avengers episode?

They're not hiding illegal activities behind a film production like Hollywood does. Human trafficking is highly illegal and requires a lot of money to do in secret (police and politicians need to be paid off). That's why every movie costs $300mil.+ these days.

    1. They pay and treat all the people involved pretty poorly
    2. FX workers are treated even worse, and paid worse
    3. Any time Godzilla or a boat weren't on screen (90% of the movie) it could have been shot on a generic backlot

Also most blockbuster level Western movies currently are incredibly inefficient. "Fix it in post" taken to ludicrous extremes is actually very expensive.

      Anonymous

This. I saw a youtuber mention that the godzilla minus 1 crew were literally killing themselves making this movie, which isnt unheard of in japanese working conditions.
However hollywood on the other hand are notorious for taking the publishers as a bible when it comes to budget loopholes.

      Anonymous

Hollywood has been the center of film making for too long. When the industry has been awash in so much cash for a such a lengthy period rent seeking becomes the norm.
People don't ask "How much should I pay for this" but rather "How much money do I have to spend?"
Suffice it to say, japanese films don't make enough money for such a wasteful attitude to set in.
Also ""Fix it in post" taken to ludicrous extremes is actually very expensive." Is another symptom of this.
