what the frick nobody actually holds these opinions, right? 2014 was an awesome somber standalone film where it focuses on humans finding a protector from forces unknown, a celebration of godzilla; kotm is testing that new protector and watching people almost doom everything because of their hubris. Then, gvk destroys all of that. gvk is JUST "what if it was wacky like the other godzilla films" without any of the fun, just "Wow that was cool guys didn't you like that?" over and over to the point of frustration, and the final fight with mechagodzilla was GODAWFUL.
2014 wasn't a celebration of Godzilla, it felt like the director didn't even like Godzilla or want him in the movie. King of the Monsters was a massive improvement.

They learned the wrong lesson. The only thing I don't like about 2014 is them teasing godzilla then wienerblocking you too many times. The human plot wouldn't have felt so overwhelming if they didn't do that. Also the human plot wasn't as good as it could've been. As -1 shows it's not that people dislike human plots, it's that they dislike bad human plots. If the plots good, people like it. Simple as.

They were anything but toned down. Everything about the humans in Kotm is escalated and exaggerated. I'd say they saw the complaints that the human parts in the 2014 were boring and decided to fix it with more trendy television stars, more marvel-tier quipsters, and more intense family drama. Except instead of being exciting, endearing, or otherwise interesting they just became insufferable.
As unexciting as the humans in 2014 might be, they at least accomplish the task of framing the monster fights and offering a perspective that elevates the scale of the monsters. kotm humans just interrupt the monster bits while both failing to offer anything of value and also being far more offensively annoying.

Underrated post, KSI is the only movie in the monsterverse to feature actors of note given something to work with and turning out decent performances. The human content in that movie mogs the rest of the series, and the monster stuff ranges from pretty good to really good too. KSI > GvK > G14 >> KotM (embarrassingly bad movie)

If KotM weren’t the big-budget remake of “Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster” that I’ve wanted since I was seven, I probably wouldn’t like it as much as I do. I think the dude from Cabin in the Woods/Billy Madison who plays the Monarch tech guy is as cringe as he is because he’s clearly written to be way younger, calling people “dude”, and talking about wanting to have kids some day, when he’s probably knocking on 60. MBB and Ice Cube’s son suck too, but the actual monster scenes (aka, why everyone showed up) are cool as hell.
This, I fricking hate that Skull Island is put into the same category as KotM and GvK. The human element in that movie is miles above the others, Sam Jackson, the dude stuck on the island since WW2, Hiddleston, even Brie Larson is entertaining.
The motivation of Vera Farmiga's character was bewildering. One second she's totally cool with monsters destroying the earth, and then when it actually starts to happen she's like "I NEVER WANTED THIS, CHUDS!!" Classic woman moment.
The people are the reason KotM sucks so bad. Their plot is moronic and it every moment spent with those unlikable dullards is a chore. The fights and kaiju are good but not enough to salvage the human side which takes up the majority of the movie.

eh, I thought skull island was good but I didn't like it as much as 2014. I didn't care for any of the actors really, and it felt like they spent just a little too long on everyone being broody instead of the imminent danger of the situation they were in. It's been a while though. I would say I enjoyed it more than GvK by a mile though, I think the first 3 monsterverse films were all 'good'.
Skull Island is the best Jurassic Park movie since the first Jurassic Park, and I would almost go as far as saying that it’s a better Kong than Jackson’s version, if for no other reason than the pacing is infinitely better, and there’s no cringe scenes that I recall.
Really good cast too. It’s a shame that it’s a period piece set in the 70s, because it would have been cool to see some of those characters in the current movies, to maybe offset some of the cringe new characters.

There's a feature on the 2014 DVD where Gareth Edwards talks about the challenges of creating a totally new monster that is both believable and fits within the design language of Godzilla. I think they nailed it. They're memorable, at least, although I wonder if they should've gotten proper names.

It's only really a challenge if you're stuck in the american creature design mindset. Making a design that fits with godzilla is easy, hell they've even done it a couple times since like with the mammoth sloth thing.
Godzilla is just a 1930's t-rex with stegosaurus plates. Just combine cool animal traits and you get cool monsters.

What blows me away is that we're going all in on the hollow earth lore, but we're just gonna ignore the monsters like Megalon or Megaguirus that would be perfect for it.
