Have you seen the original concepts for what ‘98 Godzilla was going to look like? It was way closer in design to Japanese Godzilla of the time, they probably made him more dinosaur-like to capitalise on the success of Jurassic Park

Pre mutated Godzilla in Minus One definitively rakes after thesw design, also look at how agile he is and how he moves like an actual dinosaur, whereas fully transformed he moves like is is struggling to walk straight up and slowly, which i believe is deliberate.

It's weird because a lot of the the original 90s US Godzilla concepts were made by the very people behind the Jurassic Park dinosaurs, like Stan Winston and Crash McCreery (pic related)
The problem was that when Emmerich and Devlin came in they threw all that out, wrote a new story, and asked Patrick Tatopoulos to make an entirely new design based on their weird specifications
Emmerich basically Producers himself into making the movie. He never wanted to make Godzilla and hated the character, so he tried making something as off-brand as he possibly could. But Toho just wanted the project to get moving after the Debont/Winston version fell apart and let it go through.
I don’t think it would’ve worked either way given the technology of the time, hindsight is 20/20
With that being said I’ve still come to appreciate 98 Godzilla, it even seemed like it got homaged by the first form of Minus One

Nah it doesn't top either in terms of excitement. Stakes are pretty low. It does deliver in terms of spectacle and the villain wasn't bad, but it's completely skippable.

Fire Lion, The Visitor, and Lightning Bug - These three, along with Obsidius, were the conceptualized new monsters to be voted into the game (Krystalak was going to be in the game regardless). Obsidius was the monster ultimately voted into the game, and the other three monsters were discarded. Fire Lion would have been a part of the Earth Defenders faction, while The Visitor and Lightning Bug would have been part of the Aliens faction.
Hedorah - Not made due to complex cell shading that was required due to his blob-like form, as well as due to his changes of forms, which were impossible to do with the Wii. Hedorah would have been part of the Aliens faction.
King Kong - Mentioned in an interview. King Kong was not included due to rights issues with Universal Pictures.[3] He would have been a member of the Earth Defenders faction.

Kong has always been more popular in America than Godzilla. Kong is also more empathetic to a casual audience. Most people don’t know what the frick a “Showa” or “Heisei” era is.
No, he hasn't. The monster kids generation worshipped Kong. Or rather the original movie. They didn't give a crap about the rest of the genre they just loved the 1933 movie. Gradually it changed and a new generation emerged. Since the 70s Godzilla was more or less on par with Kong in terms of popularity even won a popularity poll. Then around mid 00s when for the first time there was a release of original versions of Godzilla movies his superiority became pretty obvious. In fact it was probably already a thing since the 90s.
Today it's Kong who's trying to catch up with Godzilla. 70 years of near constant presence (and now finally with accessible back catalogue) vs a character who showed up once every 30 years to redo the same story.
Then why did KotM 2019 barely break even?
Because Avengers Endgame and the Lion King remake were mogging the shit out of everything that summer.
Bad, prolonged marketing campaign. They messed it up big time but the movie was hugely popular on home media, streaming and in terms of merch sold.
That reminds me, Godzilla '98 and Disney's Mighty Joe Young are the reason why we didn't get Jackson's Kong in the 90s. The studio was afraid to compete and the crappy box office those two got made them all the more ready to pull the plug. Then Jackson went off to make Lord of the Rings and used his clout to do a bigger version of his remake pitch.

I know what happens I decided I don't want to have a bad time watching Godzilla be like an butthole with no sympathy losing all the nuance he had a few years ago and everything focusing on how much of a cool guy Kong is.
At least I think that's how it is. Godzilla gets one semi-sympathetic scene when he sleeps in the Colosseum and comes back at the end. I don't know if anyone said something about it in the movie that he's getting used to people again or the coexistence is improving.
But then Godzilla attacks the nuclear plant. He has his reasons but I don't know if there's a scene of Monarch explaining that there's a good reason why Godzilla wanted that energy and we're on his side.
And of course he reunites with Mothra. I'm really surprised they showed it like that.

There are different kinds of Godzilla. VIllainous or heroic. This one is supposed to be heroic as per director's own words and has heroic and sympathetic qualities. Why wouldn't I want them to be there when I see a new movie with the character? He doesn't have to be nice but he has a certain characterization that Wingard can't do right but everyone else but him can.

I'm ok with him being edgy anti-hero but they're not giving him any gentler moments anymore or some kind of little things that made people root for him. I know there's a tiny scene with Mothra where he smiles at her and he comes back to Rome at the end with no explanation. So I'm gonna pretend he did it because he's getting a bit softer now that he knows he was wrong to mistrust everyone.

This, my opinion may not be popular but the full heroic Godzilla from the late Showa era was the worst. He doesn't need to be full Ultraman, he can be a hero and still be a grouch and prone to destruction.

The reception of Legendary slop hasn't been so bad. It's been quite positive in fact despite how shit it is. You might not have been alive or paying attention in 1998 but that movie was a BIG deal. lots of hype, merch and sponsorship tie-ins and then a MASSIVE letdown after release. Internet was just a little babby back then so it's not like you could deploy your shillbot army to gaslight everyone into a more beneficial narrative. Toho had to get something new out to re-establish the brand's image at least in Japan.

They thought audiences didn't want monsters in their monster movies, apparently. The whole nuke sequence in the credits was supposed to be its own scene, and Godzilla was supposed to battle jets on Alcatraz Island.
Gareth always said it was a "I want to emulate how Spielberg rarely showed Jaws" thing while ignoring that Spielberg was hesitant to show Jaws because the animatronic barely worked and was unable to do most of its scenes.
And in KOTM and GVK we saw that cgi doesn't work to make a believable monster, either. SO Edwards was right.

I've liked Wingard and Barrett's movies but they're not good comedy writers, Dan Stevens is charismatic and Brian Henry is funny but they both suck in this movie. WaKong and WaZilla are not very interesting villains, and Godzilla is extremely sidelined.
