Tbh everything toriyama done with his characters after namek was a net negative. Good fights and villains but he didn't utilize most of the characters. I was never a gohan fan but I gotta admit he did him dirty after the cell saga. Even gohan defeating cell felt wierd and shit. Should have been a team effort.
Everyone without Saiyan blood is just kind of there and rendered utterly irrelevant except maybe Piccolo who gets another mentor arc. I think Toriyama literally forgot about Launch and had no idea how to work effectively work Tien back in after Cell. At least 18 got a fun side plot with her extorting Mr. Satan by kayfabe at the tournament.
Kuririn was done really dirty. He should have been a squishy wizard who is able to compete near SSJ level due to his creative ki manipulation. His kienzan was able to cut off Frieza's tail, so he should have gotten some ki buffs to remain relevant enough to fight along side Goku as the series progressed.
The Tournament of power was pure utter nonsense in terms of established power levels but its the one part of Super I actually ended up enjoying because it was fun to see the old B-Team actually be useful.

As a kid there was nothing cooler than Gohan killing Cell. And as a kid that identified with Gohan it was also the ultimate power fantasy. I was distraught when the next arc began and Gohan became a gay high schooler with short hair and he seemed to have regressed in power and didn't even want to fight anymore. And then they rubbed salt in the fresh wound by making him into even more of a joke with Saiya Man. Why did Toriyama assassinate Gohan like that?

What the frick are you talking about? Buu was the final and biggest and baddest boss, there were no more villains after that. Ending at Cell would have been too bleak, Dragonball is about good guys win and we all have our cake and eat it too. By the end of the series we’ve seen literally all these people grow up and grow old and have kids and grandkids. Perfect ending.
I just wanted someone else kill cell. I was so involved during that saga. I was still a teen and shiiit. Training only because dbt inspired me... Then I tried weed and threw away my future.
Buu arc kino until Buu comes back after Vegeta sacrifices himself. It was the perfect end to his character but it was immediately rendered completely useless. There are some fun moments later in the arc with Gotenks and Gohan's training, but Toriyama really meanders around aimlessly until the finish.
literally every. single. villain in the entire series has gone through a gauntlet of the z-fighters and defeating them all before a team effort led by Goku beats them in the end, although Goku did solo Piccolo. it ends with Vegeta’s sacrifice and Goku doesn’t even get to fight Buu? nearly as reddit as thinking it should have ended with Cell

Ending at Cell would have been much better, narratively, than bringing Goku back. Even if it made people mad, sometimes endings have to do that to tell the story right.
Yep. Goku has saved the Earth one last time, Gohan becomes a hero in his own right, and Vegeta has reconciled with Trunks and taken his first steps toward redemption. It was a good stopping point.
