Berserk unironically has really good story and pretty well though-out themes at it's core. Although after Golden Age it's kinda downhill in terms of story (still decent but not great). The artwork however kept getting better all the way up to Fantasia.

I thought some parts of Conviction arc like Gut's introspective moments were top kino. Also, Falcon of the Millenium Empire arc when it focused on Griffith's rise was excellent too. Golden Age is just one part of a larger story. Fantasia has some great moments too like Casca's awakening. Golden Age is just a flashback that sets the events of the story in motion. People think that Golden Age is all Berserk have to offer but forget that there's an actual story that continues after that. Miura lost track of himself and dragged out the release schedule but he absolutely was planning a larger narrative.

Berserk hasn't been good since conviction arc. It's literally just a shojo now, which doesn't make it bad because of that, but it certainly hasn't been "the greatest fantasy ever told" for more than half of it's time.

I like Berserk but let's not exaggerate. Outside of that one short arc from the original 90's anime, which is basically just a glorified flashback about how Guts and Griffith met, the rest of it is complete and utter garbage that only gets worse and worse the longer it went.
There is literally no reason to go past the Golden Age arc unless you just want to experience disappointment.

Watching the 2016/2017 berserk is what got me back into anime. I had watched samurai x as a boy, never watched dragon ball, one piece, hunter x, bleach or naruto. Once i saw the satanic elements i instantly got hooked. After that i have only ever liked maybe AOT and gintama and maybe golden kamuy, but the berserk world is so unique even for an anime, i don't really understand how people can hate it for stupid and flimsy reasons like it having rape or the latter chapters not being as epic, i mean what kind of stupid criticism is that. After the eclipse, anybody who has a three digit iq should expect guts' fight to be futile. Did you not see how much griffith struggled to get power, yes guts is raped but his real struggle starts after the eclipse. In a world where morality is grey, sacrifice is the true virtue here and griffith has been sacrificing himself for his eventual position since he was a boy. Your christian morals don't matter in this world. Once you understand that you can begin to love the franchise for what it is.

The Golden Age arc is written like a Greek tragedy and has a story on par with some of the original Greek tragedies. The Black Swordsman, Lost Children and the beginning of the one with the refugee camp are still very good, then it falls off a cliff with the RPG character party and frankly the introduction of too much "good" magic and expansion of characters with supernatural abilities. I felt that Berserk worked better as a shittier medieval world with powerful evil magic and demons but no real "good" magic or entities, with normal humans having to deal with it. Guts having insane sword handling abilities aside, him having power from surviving a dark ritual and his weapons taking on supernatural power due to the sheer amount of apostles and monsters slain felt consistent with the world somehow..
Only part of the post-refugee camp and inquisition storyline that is of even close quality to the earlier arcs is Griffith's handling of the not-India invasion. You know he's an evil narcissistic son of a b***h, but he engineers how he liberates the kingdom from occupation in such a flawlessly heroic manner that you still strongly feel the appeal that has people flocking to his banner, and wishing he was as good as he portrayed himself.

Berserk could have ended in a similar way Return of the Jedi did. Guts learning to defeat Griffith through the Moonlight Boy connection but also seeing potential for reconciliation since Griffith's nature isn't completely corrupted because he incarnated part Guts' and Casca's child. Through the conciliation route Griffith could stay alive as ruler and Guts could be with Casca without becoming a monster himself, destroying their child.
Or have Griffith die defeating Void. Closer to RotJ.
