The artist's intent dies the moment he unveils his work. What's the one thing every person knows about art? That the Mona Lisa seems to be looking at you no matter where you stand. But you go to see it and the crowd is too large to freely try standing in different places. And Leonardo was just painting some lady in the first place. He probably felt like he was doing a still life. But people go to see it and they're the still life. Made still by the crowd. Then they go home and talk about the surprisingly small canvas and the mysterious smile.

I can't think of a living director who has more mastery of the medium of film and where its possibilities can be pushed to. To "show" a story rather than to "tell" it and leave it open to the audience to personally interpret while still managing to weave a wholly cohesive narrative to those paying attention.
