Green Lantern Beware my power

this was enjoyable if a little flat in certain areas. I'd really like to see more b-team justice league movies like this

Took me a minute to get use to the new animation style, but I'm starting to like the new timeline. Hawkgirl was the highlight for me, love her.

You know, some stuff just didn't gel. Sinestro doing undercover work with a small team is not Sinestro at all. And the whole Dark Hal thing was just so DC. It's like DC have barred anyone from making a DC movie that isn't grim, dark, and an hour too long.

If the Constantine short is any indication, they are setting up an animated crisis crossover. I expect Hal will come back via Spectre.

The Constantine thing was what convinced me this timeline is somehow even worse than the one that ended in Apokolips War.

Not only was the Dark Hal thing unenjoyable, it didn't make any sense. Hall should have immediately switched sides when he got that info out of the others in prison instead of escaping with them, also why did Sinestro seemed shocked when that jailbreak happened if he know Hal was on his side?

So all it took was a barrage of yellow arrows to take down the entire green latern core?

Are the Green Lantern comics as boring as this movie?

Some assorted thoughts roughly 40 minutes in:

      >I guess the DCAMU is carrying on the tradition of everyone being needlessly stupid and violent for no particular reason, because we gotta work in those marketing fights as efficiently as possible
      >I guess the DCAMU is carrying on the tradition of the universe being soul-crushingly bleak
      >John appears to have no character other than having PTSD and being grumpy
      >Kendra is psychotic
      >Animation is meh
      >The way everyone talks like they've been partially anaesthetized and every sentence is followed by one or more awkward silences is slowly driving me crazy. The fricking "Did you do it, filthy Rannian?" "What, no"/"Did you do it, filthy Thanagarian?" "What, no" exchanges are giving me deja vu

In my personal opinion no, but it's not much of a bar to clear and hardly a compliment to them. Frick this, I just wanted to see Lyssa Drak in her space lingerie instead of listen to all of this dead-inside blathering and half-hearted "Ehhhhh, I GUESS I'll use this ring I hate for a LITTLE longer" bullshit.

Updated thoughts, 25~ minutes away from the end:

        >What the FRICK were they expecting to happen when they let the captain go? At least Kendra has the excuse of appreciating a good death in battle
        >Lyssa was hot for all of what, 20 seconds of her screentime
        >Hal's frickin' smile at Sinestro while naked has been the highlight of those whole thing so far

        kek

        It's funny because it's accurate.

SinHal/HalSin is based. I think it was my first GL ship for some weird reason (probably saw really good fanart of it). I'm more into BruHal these days.

I’m honestly surprised other than Morrison in his season 2 which everyone found weird and dumb, nobody has actually just FRICKING made it canon. Out of all the virtue signalling things DC could possibly do, if tomorrow it were to announce the Hal and Sinestro have always been fricking in between spats I wouldn’t even bat an eye. I’m firmly straight but so much GLshit goes above and beyond the call of duty to have these two make frick-eyes at each other since before token gay characters were even a pushed thing.

Anyway, finished the whole thing and I have two major takeaways.

            1. For some reason I thought the reset was going to make the movies more optimistic but holy hell, they doubled down on making shit bleaker than the New 52 itself.

2a. The scene with Sinestro and naked Hal was so much gayer than what little I inferred from all the reactions on Cinemaphile, it would have been less gay if they just had sex.

2b. I now still processing the fact that in-universe, Lyssa had to sit there and listen to Sinestro literally refer to Hal as his master.

I had to pause while Sinestro was smirking at a naked Hal, choking him, riding him and watching as he choked on a phallic alien. And then call him master... You're right. Would have been less gay if they both had sex.

I had a real sensible chuckle when I realised that thing was the movie's stand-in for Parallax, that they were basically doing Zero Hour in the most halfassed way possible, and later on that given how John BTFO'd him the demonstrated feats suggest that Hal was just delusional and drunk on power and didn't actually have the capacity to remake the universe.

He never really has a character arc does he, he just kind of b***hes and moans about having a Lantern ring while reluctantly using it to advance the plot. And then he suddenly turns around and goes iT'S NOT JUST AN OATH

I actually like John in the other things he appears in. JLU cartoon was kino due to Phil Lamarr and I still root for John/Shayera. But this just felt really flat. The actors are big names and have been in many shows I've liked. But how they managed to make someone like Jimmi Simpson sound boring is beyond me.
        I'll try a few comics.

          >Shayera
Hey if we're talking about everyone being a fricking flat piece of shit in this one, Shayera was absolutely shit. She was nothing but the screaming space barbarian problem child for 3/4s of the movie, and then it was like some writer decided she had to act like they're already done the friendship/respect arc without actually doing anything to make her grow as a person.

Yeah this movie was an absolute shitshow if you are interested in reading GL I’d recommend the Johns era books as it’s easily the most accessible that and the Rebirth era Hal & Pals and Green Lanterns

      Anonymous

No, this is just a John problem. His backstory and motivations are the least interesting, compare him to Hal, Sinestro, Soranik Natu, Kyle etc... and he's nothing but a side character who only serves to hype up the real MCs of the GLC. What's even funnier is that the Johns run regularly cycled main casts but John never got the care the other members got.

Maybe he was racist but it's clear that the Green Lanterns are the best developed part of the DC universe by far having 2 of the best DC comics events in Sinestro Corps war and Blackest Night.

I don’t think it’s a race thing, I think like all the writers that came before and after him they just have no idea how to make John a consistently compelling character

I want to ask the people involved in Young Justice the same question.

Not only was the Dark Hal thing unenjoyable, it didn't make any sense. Hall should have immediately switched sides when he got that info out of the others in prison instead of escaping with them, also why did Sinestro seemed shocked when that jailbreak happened if he know Hal was on his side?

In fact, Hal should've just killed the team while they were LOCKED IN THE CELL with him-especially since John didn't even have his ring at that point. On that note I'd probably hate how John literally beat Hal with MUH WILL if it wasn't how Hal wins literally all his major villain battles. What's this, Krona has all the universe's willpower under his control? Frick you, Hal just wills harder at him. So turnabout is fair play.

I just want a Flash story with no Eobard

Not even the writers can think of one.

Given the heroes do a lot of NOT MUH NO KILL RULE in the movie, yes Lyssa survives along with every other Yellow Lantern not actually shot by Hal. Too bad her total screentime amounts to like, 50 seconds in the whole thing. And I'm being generous here

    This movie was terrible
    >SURPRISE CORRUPTED HAL
I'm not even that much into GL but that felt like a cop out
Maybe make the alien that corrupted Hal something bigger or when Hal dies the parasite leaves his body and withers without a host so Hal can smile at Ollie one last time before passing away
And the whole "Justice League members are away on missions" thing was pointless, are they eventually getting movies that take place at the same time while they're away?
I have no idea which direction WB is taking with these movies and not in a good way, if they release more garbage like this then I'll have to head out from the DCAU, Apocalypse War still left a terrible aftertaste
I enjoyed the Blue Beetle Showcase more than this slog

I swear WB just wants to turn the Justice League into a horror story for how hard they ride the EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE IS AWFUL FOREVER, AND FRICK YOU-GOOD GUYS FINISH LAST train.

I cannot stress enough how bizarre and suspension-breaking all the awkward pauses make following the dialogue. It really is like they told the voice actors they have to count a few seconds in their head before replying to another voice actor.
