My guess for why it's done with female superheroes is because whoever is writing it sees balls as this physical symbol of societal masculinity, and a woman hitting it is like a woman "HITTING MASCULINITY WOOOOW SO DEEP", but that's worse because it evokes a weird, primal, almost Freudian fixation on and hatred of the subject.
