And even though Heine only got token screen time he and Athrun did get along, and the Minerva was definitely worse off without him.
The whole series would be different if Heine didn't die tbh. At least the whole Minerva crew. Shinn probably wouldn't be assigned the Destiny, Athrun might not have defected. Angel down might actually would have happened earlier, etc.
I think it would be the opposite actually. If Heine didn't die not only would Athrun probably have jumped over to team Kira right away, but there probably wouldn't have been as much hostility between the groups since Minerva didn't lose a major guy to their meddling.
Athrun would have been far more agreeable in their meeting if he wasn't pissed off that Heine died.
Would Athrun have jumped ship though? Didn't he defect cause he started to see the cracks in Durandal's system? It's literally been decades since I've watched it. Also, with Heine still alive, I would think the battle of Messiah might change since Zaft would have another ace with them. Unless he jumps ship like Yzak cause he didn't drink the Durandal kool-aid. It would be interesting to see if they would go with the Faith Destiny Concluder squad had he survive.
Was Shinn seemingly killing Kira a catalyst too?
Nah, what pushed him over was when Durandal exposed the Logos and ommitted the Archangel and Freedom from the footage so that it came off as purely a ZAFT effort. By not broadcasting that they pretty much branded the Archangel crew as terrorists and then enacted Angel Down. Shinn killing Kira was more a cherry on top. That and Durandal suspecting Athrun's loyalty since he has footage of him meeting Cagali and Kira didn't help. Athrun was lucky he had the ZAFT b***hes willing to help him.
Well, they WERE terrorists.
They were always more like a faction in an internal Orb power struggle than terrorists. They had the legit backing of Orb's representative and one of the major families and were acting under her orders to get the military back under her control of which Zaft suffered collateral damage.
Also, I think supplementary material stated that Terminal was being funded by Cagalli.
The funny thing, had Durandal known about Terminal, that would've made his hit on Lacus legitimate. But the timeline on when Terminal was up and running is unclear.
There definitely didn't seem to be a Terminal at that point given how blind they seem to be and how underequipped and staffed AA is. I know that's mostly because Terminal seemed to be invented midshow to begin with but still
Athrun was already uncomfortable with the idea of fighting against Orb, even though Heine told him not to worry and just do his job he wasn't really happy working with Zaft and only really signed up because at the time it seemed like Orb and Kira would be safely neutral.
Without the rage of Heine's death in his mind when Kira asked him to rejoin them during their meeting he might have just gone along with it. At the very least without Heine's death being a sore spot with Minerva Athrun might have been able to get the two groups to cooperate later on without coming to blows, at least until Angel Down.
I doubt Heine surviving would have made a difference. He was no match for Kira as we saw in episode 23, and the Heine Destiny stuff was just fluff for the model kit and the never really got off the ground in universe, and Durandal always pretty much intended Destiny for Shinn as his part of his plan to make him his personal SEED warrior.

This is unlikely. Heine was a member of FAITH and all members of FAITH seen had some ties/loyalty to Durandal specifically, and its unlikely Heine would've been assigned to the Minerva if Durandal didn't trust him about as much/more as Athrun, though not as much as Rey or Talia.
Also recall that Heine was pissed off at Kira at the Dardanelles before he died. And Kira still killed several Minerva crewmen when he shot the Tannhauser, so Heine, a model ZAFT soldier who puts little stock in rank, isn't going to be receptive to Athrun's attempts to advocate on the Archangel's behalf. If he lives, you likely see him go after Kira at Crete, and use his GOUF to give Kira hell by channeling his inner Ramba Ral/Norris Packard. Seeing such a display while Athrun goes down like a b***h makes Shinn lose any residual respect he had for Athrun even quicker. But then if Heine reprimands Shinn over returning Stella, I'd expect it would be a shock, but also serve to better round his character.
But if we fast forward to Angel Down, Heine likely supports Shinn/Rey's efforts to strategize against Kira, and is in Talia's office when Athrun complains about the order, yet takes her side.
If anything, this sets Heine up to actually be a better, more well-suited final battle rival to Athrun - two model ZAFT soldiers, driven by loyalty to their home and internal principles respectively. Then you have Rey fight Mwu and Shinn fight Kira.
But we can't have that because having tm revolution as a full time voice actor would be too expensive

He's not likely to do anything to Kira, as the Gouf is basically helpless against Freedom's speed and Kira's reaction time as the episode shows. Without Shinn's anti Kira strategy even the second stage Gundam's couldn't last against it but that might not matter as without Heine's death to piss off Athrun and make him weary of Kira inadverntly getting someone else killed he wouldn't be nearly as aggressive and probably wouldn't have pissed off enough to get Savior destroyed at all. Athrun could very well just let Shinn and Heine be disabled and hang back and cover Minerva and just let Kira wreck the whole Orb and EA fleet and make them back off again like the last time.
And that's assuming Athrun without his knee jerk reaction to Heine's death causing him to meet up with Kira in a negative light doesn't decide to just jump over to AA right then and there to either want to work with them outright or at least try to keep them under control as Athrun was already uncomfortable being there by that point and mostly stuck with them because he rejected Kira's offer to join them because he was mad about Heine.
This objection sounds like very knee-jerk and ad hoc. Arguing from conclusions, not towards them.

Except Kira at this point is still in a stupor of hubris, remember? He is visibly shocked when Shinn dodged his attack at Crete in the Blast Impulse. Because Kira is so used to all of his moves connecting on the field facing someone who could actually react and cause him to miss is an unexpected shock to him.
Plus Heine is a named character an a veteran of the First War, like Athrun, Yzak and Dearka. If the intention is to have him live, the writing needs to buff his skill at least so he dodges the charge Stella killed him with in the original canon. Such a buff should have cascading effects in later battles, e.g., if you go with my idea that he becomes a rival for Athrun, in the final battle you let Athrun still win, but make it clear that this is ONLY because Athrun has SEED and Heine does not.

I disagree. Saviour didn't last against the Freedom because Athrun never tried. Its not even that he couldn't get his SEED boner up. Its that his overall performance in that machine is just low-effort and low-energy, but the Saviour itself is decently designed to fight the Freedom.

"Kira refuses to kill anyone" is one of those things that's been exaggerated in the fandom over time and isn't actually how he's presented in the show. Case in point, he has no problem with slicing battleships in half, nor does he have a problem with cutting the druggies in half, or gutting Rau like a fish and shoving him into the path of a nuclear death ray, or putting Stella down at Berlin.
Kio from AGE is the actual "never kill anyone" guy. Kira just goes out of his way not to do it when he's able, which he usually is because he's basically Superman. Which is still bad writing, but it's not the same kind of bad writing.

If it can be argued that a final battle fight would've been more action-packed and decided on pilot skills/machine specs if the participants muted their radios and did not communicate at all, the writing is subpar. That kind of lame-shit is what I expect to see early prior to most character developments has yet to occur.
