Gundam ZZ

Why the frick does it get so much hate here? Sure, it's not as dark as Zeta, but...it's not as dark as Zeta. The women are better written, the villains are more entertaining, the cyber newtypes have a shade more depth than being morons like Four and Rosamie...

Also Judau is a better protagonist than both Kamille and Amuro combined.

I don't see a reason to compare Zeta with ZZ, it's a continuation so why not enjoy both for what they have to offer?

This is a 21st century phenomenon, if you go back to fans at the time, most liked both, even in the west. In the early 90s you had William Chow running his anime store "Anime Ja Nai" who loved all the old Tomino shows and Sunrise mecha anime in general - these days terminally online geeks have to go to war for their favorites by bad mouthing other shows.

I liked both, though I liked ZZ more. Going into it, however, I kept hearing how trash it is compared to Zeta, how there's no stakes, and how the crew is fricking unbearable.

The correct way to view Z and ZZ is to notice that its basically the same staff, and that the staff in question consistently does good work, reifying the anime beyond their creators leads to people latching on to their own subjective arbitrary pet peeves that aren't useful for public discussions.

There's just a tonal whip lash at the beginning, that's where the stigma comes from. I always recommend people take a break after watching Zeta, then watching ZZ later.
    >Also Judau is a better protagonist than both Kamille and Amuro combined
I like Judau a lot, but he feels like a Mary Sue a lot of the time, but that's nothing new with gundam protags.
    Amuro>Judau>Kamille

I liked the first 20 episodes more than the latter half, it doesn't "get good" just because it gets serious, the writing goes to shit.

The Shangri-La brats & Endra scrubs aren't nearly as engaging of a cast as the original Argama crew & Titans

The plot is trash that makes no sense, with pieces moving without wills of their own just for plot convenience, like Glemmy's quick promotions for no reason and then the show turning around and trying to ignore his origins and portray him as leading some big project that has been going on for a while. Even though he initially was a fairly low officer chasing the main cast. And Glemmy is just the most obvious part.

Stuff like Leina's "death" is in the same way and just makes everything feel meaningless when the puppet strings are so visible.

Leina got brought back because the staff protested Tomino killing her off, lol.

I was taken aback by Leina's death when I first watched it, I thought it was a great gut punch moment. When she got brought back it definitely disappointed me, such a deflation of dramatic tension

A lot of Gundam "fans" prefer to be seen as patricians of "mature" anime. Ie, 0th MS Team, 080, etc. ZZ starts off like a saturday morning cartoon which alienates that type of "fan".

The show also features Zeon as the main antagonists again with the protagonist fighting to save the federation from them, which puts Zeon fans, or people who liked Zeta for how it questioned the feddies and portrayed Zeon as more grey.

ZZ does not feature Amuro or Char so it is often forgotten in the context of CCA, the biggest Gundam production which is a landmark in anime. Zeta is easier to connect due to how it ends with Char being jaded. Bright also leaves half way through ZZ, and ZZ portrays him negatively with him not immediately telling off that girl who was hitting on him, making him look like a cheater, and his attempt to laser a colony.

ZZ features transforming mecha. Transformers and Power Rangers are mocked in the US.

Judau is a competent adult protagonist which is hard for autistic frickups to self insert into like Amuro or Kamille.

As a Zeon fan I enjoyed ZZ, feds and aeug are also portrayed as grey.

Judau is one of the youngest protagonists though, especially in that era when it was just UC.

      >bright leaves halfway through
like 5 episodes before the end but yeah.
      >features transforming mecha
that's more zeta's gimmick. ZZ still has the Zeta gundam, but the ZZ GATTAIs.
      >judau is a competent adult
no, he's a teenager who's just old enough to recognize the bullshit of adults without being able to do much about it.

2nd half of ZZ is as dark as Zeta though.
the first half was intentionally shit because Tomino was going to kill Gundam if Sunrise didn't approve his CCA movie

Judau is so fricking terrible you have Bright and Wong commenting on it. He's an aggressively lame character surrounded by similarly shitty prop-people. Not one of the kids from Shangri-La is likeable or interesting. Muh KIDS ARE ALL NEWTYPES. Moon Moon. Every returning character is now worse written and moronic.

Agreed, but "let muh children to decided the fate of humanity" is the major theme of Gundam, one does get used to this.

I'm not sure why you'd care about Wong's opinion on anything, he was a moron who Char wanted them to stop interfering with in shit in Zeta.
