The giant is clearly a weapon of war and was sent to cause as much damage to the military as possible. Its programming was corrupted upon landing as signaled by the dent and when the dent repairs itself (at least externally) the giant immediately shows some of its true colors and reverts back to its intended purpose. So was the opening scene a hint that the giant is supposed to be a Russian superweapon or is it alien?
Wtf that's kino, I wonder why they left this out? Also I think the Atomo comic book having a human villain on the cover made me think the giant was man made.

It's was apparently added back in in the Signature Edition.
how did Bird go from the likeable females from Iron Giant/The Incredibles to that aggresive b***h from Ratatouille who slaps Linguini in one scene and not once calls him by his name?
used to ball my eyes out when I was a kid to the scene where he flys into it the bomb, I have no idea what it was, but when he says “Superman” the tears would flow
The soldiers weren’t shown as bad guys, though. They were good guys. But the G-man guiding them was the real problem.
Also, the Giant is able to protect everyone because of his power. If you don’t have a powerful giant friend, you would something else to protect yourself with.
reminder that Mansley was probably executed for his actions. He sealed his fate by stealing a military jeep and trying to escape the nuke he ordered ("screw our country. I wanna live!")
I think the message is that nukes are bad, not guns necessarily

Alien, there was a cut scene showcasing a dream which clues in some of his origins.
