Shimo seems cooler in motion, basically Rhedosaurus with ice powers. Not really keen on eveything else though. Lanky Kong basically seems like a Disney villain rather than an actual threat, complete with a speshul artifact that he uses in the stupidest way imaginable. Kong is still boring and I don't like the fact that the niglet is a thing, much less the factor that tips the balance in the final fight. JunkieXLs discount Ifukube music still sucks, surprise surprise. Maybe the rest will be better, but if this is the highlight of the movie then owari da.

And he admits that he doesn't want him to be anything else. He prefers Kong. There's not question about it. And when he directs the next one it's going to be the third Kong movie in a row.

The whole point of Kong is "he monke" acting as an ally to the human characters who can move the plot forward. Godzilla always just does his own thing and still has animosity toward humans. Toho seems to be pretty consistent with how they want Godzilla to be portrayed, whereas Legendary's Kong is pretty much an entirely different character from the 1933 Kong or really any other iteration.
I hate this modern creature animation where everything is floppy and over animated.

I agree with you, I don’t hate everything about the MV but I think GvK went completely in the wrong direction and this movie is taking everything I hated about the first and amplifying it all. The first three were quite flawed but still decent monster movies, similar to 98, but these last two feel Pacific Rim 2 tier to me and it makes me sad. Personally I may prefer a more serious tone like GMK or Minus One, but I love the campy ones like Destroy All Monsters and Ebirah too.
I hope GxK will be that moment when people say "ok we pushed it hard enough" and the sequel is a little toned down. Let's say to the level of KotM and KSI. But I just have Kong fatigue first of all. Skull Island is good, 2014 is the same as KotM in that it has a few good scenes but is filled with mostly garbage human scenes, the main difference is 2014 is notorious for showing you a scene and then cutting it to the fight on tv before turning away, they rob you of the action again and again, KotM doesn't do that at all, cant imagine how 2014 wouldn't bore you when it is like 10% a monster movie, must've been really engaged in that marine dude's story
2014 does the wienertease, but the characters and the plot were still compelling to me. People complain about Godzilla being absent but the motion of events from Honolulu to San Francisco has a lot of shit happening, and I actually was compelled with the human situation, unlike KotM, where it's just there as a concession.

ill say again Godzilla KotM is the godzilla movie I waited my entire life for, its the end game of the movies like All Out Attack that I watched as a kid and wished looked more visually impressive, seeing Ghidorah like the destructive god he was always said to be was long awaited, seeing Rodan actually be more than a joke was the ultimate redemption, even Mothra got some really great scenes that worked out in the gritty new era, after it was over I prayed that we'd get to see similar movies for Hedorah, Destroyah, Biollante, Gigan, Mechagodzilla (we sorta got this) etc. After 2014 I didn't have that same hope I just thought wew I hope next time they show the monsters more than one flood scene and the end fight

I'm more of a fan of practical effects/suits and old school cinematography, but I thought it was cool seeing the monsters reimagined in the Hollywood CGI blockbuster style.
If it had done better in theaters we might have gotten more Toho monsters going forward, but they did do Mechagodzilla in GvK and Mothra is returning in GxK. There might be hope for Gigan and Destoroyah if the series continues.

Legendary did a good job of translating the existing monsters in KotM. The CG was great, and the designs and movement looked awesome. It's a shame the rest of the movie was what it was. I would have gotten about the same amount of enjoyment if it were just a series of shorts of the monsters emerging.
The OC Legendary monsters are all eh, and even Godzilla looks goofy in everything since KotM.

That is the plot with Kong. It's the "exploring Skull Island" stuff from the original King Kong, but underground and also Kong learns about his family or something. It was mostly an excuse to show off cool scenery, I preferred it over the drama.
