The comic was about Black's team killing genocidal villains in reckless supehero brawls because Black's team didn't care about shit other than proving his might. Metallo designed by braniac/luthor works fine. He can carry the mid-film action while the "real" plot goes in the background to ramp up tension for the final act where superman finds out about braniac/luthor and has a showdown. And it leaves the door for a sequel open because you can just have the main villain escape but metallo get caught.
It did alright in theaters for two weekends and then got absolutely mogged to hell and back by the second Pirates of the Caribbean film(the only film to pull in more than $1 billion worldwide in 2006) from the third weekend onward. Kevin Spacey was excellent as Lex Luthor as well.
