It would have been the perfect formula for this show. Follow some marines around on the Pillar of Autumn as it finds and crashes on Halo, use them for the characters, show what they did while Master Chief was doing his missions, and periodically have Chief show up/they help him, so he can be a badass robot man who kills aliens and doesn't afraid of anything
It could work as a perfect Companion to Halo where you see what the UMSC was doing while you did the Halo missions, and the stories could intertwine

one of the lead characters used to be a sexslave for gay men, another one is a hyper polygamist bisexual making a love nest in space. when these things come up they enhance the story, rather than dropping them onto you like a brick with the "look here, aren't we progressive" attitude, and have meaningful impact on how and why the characters do what they do.

I always thought the entire point to johns character was that he tries to not FEEL anything and focuses on the mission instead, but his humanity asserting himself during the cortana interactions (in the games and books), because FEELING would mean he'd have to deal with the tragedy of being forced to become who he is.

No! When you get into the writing of it there is no way to "show" someones divergent sexuality while making it relevant to an otherwise irrelevant story, it is ALWAYS shoehorning. For example in the Marvel movie Eternals there is a 5 minute scene dedicated solely to showing one of the eternals has a happy stable gay lover and just showing how normal that is for him nothing else. What does that have to do with... anything in the plot or Eternals source material? Nothing. Follow some marines around on the Pillar of Autumn as it finds and crashes on Halo, use them for the characters, show what they did while Master Chief was doing his missions, and periodically have Chief show up/they help him, so he can be a badass robot man who kills aliens and doesn't afraid of anything
It could work as a perfect Companion to Halo where you see what the UMSC was doing while you did the Halo missions, and the stories could intertwine

No! When you get into the writing of it there is no way to "show" someones divergent sexuality while making it relevant to an otherwise irrelevant story, it is ALWAYS shoehorning. For example in the Marvel movie Eternals there is a 5 minute scene dedicated solely to showing one of the eternals has a happy stable gay lover and just showing how normal that is for him nothing else. What does that have to do with... anything in the plot or Eternals source material? Nothing. Paramount showed their entire hand in the first Season and it was awful. they don't understand anything about Halo and don't have any interest in adapting it faithfully. it's poorly written AU fanfiction. Paramount's approach is exactly the opposite of how HBO have adapted The Last of Us, and that's why it has and will continue to fail to move any sort of needle. i actually wouldn't be surprised if whatever gay men subplot they wrote into this second season of Halo is a direct reaction to that TLOU episode that was so highly praised.
