No. This will never stop. From here it's a long, slow, death-march towards your absolution. With each passing moment your civilization decays and rots, and tomorrow will be worse yet than today. And the next. And the next. This is your hell. This is your punishment for deeds done in a life lived prior. You will know nothing but decay. Each moment of happiness and excitement will leave you to chase their fleeting joy, never to return in that same magnitude. Everything you will ever know will be duller and duller, bleaker and bleaker, until the world around you is so dark that you are subsumed by it and die. There will be no light at the end of the tunnel, no beacon to beckon you. Only a growing coldness that leaves you shivering and numb. This is your lot.

Eh, I don't think so really. This is hardly the first instance of this sort of thing, and it's indicative a much wider sickness in our culture that grows more pervasive by the day.

Its easy to diminish my complaints as being those of a fragile racist, but if you really think about it, my complaint has very little to do with the literal races involved. It would be the same as a Mao biopic played by Ryan Gosling, or Idi Amin played by Jackie Chan. We are pulling away from reality, and when civilizations do that things very quickly become chaotic, violent, and difficult.

the only reason people get testy about white actors portraying historical figures from other parts of the world is because for a few centuries white actors would just throw on some black face or a pair of buck teeth and call it a day. you claim it's not about race and yet you can't suspend your disbelief even when the role is treated with respect and dignity.

        Anonymous

At the heart of marxism is the belief that the exploitation of the working class by the bourgoisie creates special kind of gnostic knowledge in the exploited people that the bourgoisie doesnt have access to.
All subsequent iterations of marxism including current wokeness use the same principle but exchange class consciousness for race consciousness, gender consciousness etc.
You can read all about it in selfprofessed marxist eve sedgewicks book "the epistomology of the closet".

I dont care about this cause Denzel is a good actor. Film is an extension of theatre and we can suspend our disbelief for the fact that a black man is playing a greek. I would only have a problem if the writers try to push current day issues in our face or cast a amateur minority actor over a good white actor.

Up to a point. film and theatre work on different rules. Everything from props to actors' visuals is taken more literally in film as opposed to the vert symbolic decour and overacting present in theatre. With some exceptions, film is supposed to work at face value.

I'm not white but I think he's one of many honorary white and respected by white people all over the world. Also, Washington is such a powerful white people name, like General Washington, I don't know it fits really well with Danzel. I think most if not all white people would agree with me.

Romans actively traded with and immigrated to sub Saharan Africa and vice versa. There's countless examples of Roman artwork and literature depicting sub Saharan Africans in all walks of Roman life.

Wrong, Romans only settled the coastal region of North Africa. They only traded with the Berbers who were responsible for the sub saharan trade network adn not with the Africans of the interior. Roman expeditions into the Continent were few and far between. However some Romans were in fact aware of their existence thanks to their contact with Nubia through Egypt.

Berbers, there's no major evidence of major Sub-saharan slave exchange until the Muslim period. In fact, the slave trade declined in the Roman Empire following the third century crisis.

This only happened a few times, and most slaves came from Europe as that's where most of Rome's wars were fought. Rome's population also heavily fluctuated and after the Empire wide proclamation of citizenship, the role of slavery greatly diminished.

The Romans were vaguely aware of black Africa but had no significant contact with it. The costs of crossing the Sahara desert are enormous and the potential benefits miniscule. As a republic and empire Rome existed for hundreds of years and over the course of all that time they made only four known exploratory missions into Western black Africa.

They had considerable contact with Nubia and Ethiopia later on, even after the Muslim conquests of Egypt and the Levant. People forget that these lands once traded spices from India as well as exchanged Christian theology

What % of all known Roman artwork depicts "black" people. What % of those are based on real people.

The article doubts the "african" origin of these depictions, as well as addresses the simplistic descriptions as assumptions rather than being from the original work. In truth, it's hard to say what these represent and only one is from the Roman period to begin with.

There are no exact figures but a rough estimate would suggest that we have thousands of pieces of art from ancient Rome not including pottery and coins. In addition, the genetics on ancient Rome is pretty overwhelming. If even modest sized African populations existed in Europe we would be able to detect them with modern DNA testing the way the influx of West Asian DNA into Europe has been. But we can't actually find them. Somehow they disappeared in the middle ages and left behind no genetic legacy.

There were Romans descended from Gauls as well as Greeks, the Empire was pretty diverse. Kinda like how Europe in general is.

We're using a modern perception of Africa to portray a historic African. What are we going to do, resurrect the Phonecian ethnicity?

Casting their exterminators? That's pretty fricked up.

          >Literally a third of Rome's population was made up of slaves.
This only happened a few times, and most slaves came from Europe as that's where most of Rome's wars were fought. Rome's population also heavily fluctuated and after the Empire wide proclamation of citizenship, the role of slavery greatly diminished.

I don't mean to blow your mind here, but all Romans considered themselves to be former slaves. It was part of their (national?) identity.
