sorry that is the accepted and correct take. not a dream per se but psychotic visions that overlap his reality. Paul Allen bit is the only suspect part and even then can be chalked up to the fact Paul Allen never even existed

Poor people are sociopaths too, the average "rich butthole" discussing war in yemen at the table of a restaurant is no different than the average poorgay discussing the kardashians/sports at the mcdonalds.

Because people who get overexposed to super high lifestyles develop serious psychological issues. But this is suppose to be obviously common knowledge. But there is another psychological issue that prevents people from understanding a concept like this... AUTISM!

The book goes into this more. Patrick and his co-workers/friends are all pretty much identical, hence why he constantly gets confused for that dickhead Marcus Halberstram. They all have similar jobs, have similar clothes, know the same people, live in upscale apartments, eat at the same restaurants, etc, etc. Patrick's murdering is his way of breaking free of this mold.

The fact that I came from a lower class family and was chunky as a kid makes me appreciate this a lot more. If I was just born into it then it would be meaningless

If you read the book it's more apparent, but it's a satire of the 80s Wall St. yuppie type who is hyper-competitive and status obsessed. Just look at the business card scene. This guy is ready to murder someone because their business card is 0.00001% better than his (van Patten's is the best btw). In the book there are pages about how one item is better than another in tirade after tirade about meaningless status symbols.
Also he doesn't live in a studio.

      >van Patten's is the best btw
I think if you study them closely, you'll find that Patrick Bateman's card was the best card.

He was a psycho, he represents a society that rewards sociopaths. I've had some experience inside Wall Street and at the very top of the pyramid it is literally just criminals. Liars and thieves.

They own people like this and start wars for profit. It takes a special sort of mind to see chaos, starvation, and bloodshed as an opportunity. It is an absolutely ruthless den of thieves.

Commodity traders that artificially caused African famines to corner markets, NYC gold traders that celebrate 9/11 for its bullish effect on gold prices, that sort of thing.

If you understand the mechanics of global capital markets, then you are probably involved in profiting on it, not ranting about it on Cinemaphile.

None of that can fill the void when you're unable to form genuine connections with people.
And when your thoughts and desires for wanton violence and sadism against others are diametrically opposed to society's rules and values.

i'm talking about the character. How many people did he actually know who were genuine? Like 1? A guy with his connections and the number of genuine people he met were probably single digits.

          >How many people did he actually know who were genuine?
he admired bryce because bryce had his own opinions and wasn't afraid to go against the grain, and he admired - or tolerated - jean because she was genuinely a doe-eyed innocent.
