Majority of the series is the kids getting into dangerous situations (yet still boring) and then making bad jokes.

That's disappointing to hear. Is there any good comics or books from the monsterverse franchise that I could read instead?

They've done prequel books for all three Godzilla movies (and Kong got one for GvsK too). They're alright.

Godzilla and Kong versus Justice League is later this year.

The Godzilla 2014 prequel comic (I wanna say it's called Awakening) is about Shirazawa teaming up with Kurt Russell's character from the forthcoming Apple TV show.

He's complaining about a writing trope. The sassy quips kill the pacing and mood half of the time because they're just thrown in there

Monsterverse is the only one of these non MCU cinematic universes people gave a shit about.

I'm actually kinda sad that Universal's "dark universe" is dead in the water. The concept has a ton of potential, so it's too bad that it was dumpstered after the mummy was such a flop.

I watched it, I finished it with some enjoyment at first but as time went on and I thought about the show it started to sour. The starting few episodes are great cause there's mystery there however I don't know how they hold up on a second watch and the second last stand alone episode focusing on Kong is considered the best.

I have a better question. How does it compare to Zilla's animated series?

They're on the island within the first ten minutes in this version. 90's jokes are still better than Netflix "jokes"

Absolutely fricking dreadful, in my humble opinion
Kong is basically a no-show outside of the LAST two episodes, and that alone is enough to be put on the shit list, and yet it's honestly the LEAST of the problems
The cast are fricking unbearable. As someone else mentioned they cannot go a fricking line without of "HAHA SARCASM, WOAH THAT'S CRAZY" regurgitation and quips
The plot requires ENTIRELY on misunderstandings people being moronic on purpose, and Annie essentially usurps the show in full from the other two guys, leaving their plots with literally no resolution to focus solely on her. Not that they really had much to resolve. One is just lol he's awkward and horny and wants to go to cooooollege daaaad. The other guy doesn't even have that much and besides dead dad drama that's pretty glossed over he's basically the narrative equivalent of a pack of beers you're worried about getting warm from being left in the sun. You know he's not gonna die, but they still try to push "OH MAN HE'S REALLY IN TROUBLE NOW" for stakes
Also there's like two or three acceptable monster designs across the whole thing

The Kraken was the best part, but in somewhat large part due to half ironic enjoyment of how utterly stupid the writing around it was, like precision bombing Kong's home with fricking slow-mo antigravity whales

It's weird how the show takes some time to build the mercs up as real people with names who care about each other and then proceeds to kill most of themin meanspirited ways as if they were faceless evil mooks. It does the same with the crew of the ship in the first episode. The audience is obviously expected to have a Nathan Explosionesque "heh, brutal" response to the gruesome deaths of these characters who are all established to be normal guys doing their jobs.

Sounds like they shit the bed then

If you're a Monsterverse fan wanting to see a bit more Skull Island and the monsters it has besides Kong, then yeah it's an ok watch. The biggest turn off is probably going the female teen character who is an absolute butthole. They make it clear that she grew up on the island virtually by herself from a young age, so lack of some social skills are warranted. Still she's executed in a way where you just want to punch her every second she on screen. But if you can stomach that, then yeah, you have a show with ok human moments and a good chunk of alright monster action. Enough to make me curious for a second season.

I watched it when it came out and I got through it with little issue that I recall, but on that note I don't think I've thought about it once since then. so definitely something you can throw on to waste time or background noise.

though I do recall enjoying the fact the monster villain is shown as it progresses to just be a total dick. this isn't some high minded "who's the king" stuff; this is a monster clearly walking around doing the monster equivalent of flicking everyone off for funzies
