I'm learning my 6th. It gets easier every time, especially if you stick to euro languages. After 3-4 languages you'll always get 80% of the words because even very far away euro languages communicate so if you stumble upon a new word in say Russian, you'll have an equivalent in one of the three other languages most of the time.

I think most people can learn enough Spanish to understand a basic Spanish language film. The rest of the time its just about repeated exposure.

You just have to make associations to kind of guess the meaning of the word sometimes. Libro and book can be the same time, but you can sort of guess it by associating libro with library if that makes sense. "quiero leer un libro" means i want to do something and obviously its not "i want to do a library".

The thing is that Spanish (and other latin languages grammar) is VERY complex, way more than english for example. The same sentence can be said in 10 different ways and 8 of them means exactly the same, while the other 2 have subtle hints. Try to model that mathematically...
On the other hand this means that speaking 'understandable' Spanish is piss easy, we will understand you even if your grammar is fricked up. Speaking good Spanish is a little more complex. It also means that studying the grammar in high school a la chomsky is fricking insane. Sentences can be long as paragraphs with several verbs inside, and some words (fricking 'se') can mean 15 different things.
Another point that makes Spanish easy is the 'phonetics before all' rule that forces the words to be written exactly as pronounced and the big difference in prononciation among sounds (this has a name but I dont remember it): even if your prononciation is crap is very difficult to missunderstand it because sounds are so far appart from each other.
I do believe Spanish should be modified to 'clean' it after centuries (g/j, c/k, h, accent rules) but even so it is nowadays one of the simplest yet more complete laguages you can learn.
I would say the most difficult is mastering the verb tenses.
Other languages have a couple of past, present, present continous and a couple of futures.
In (proper) Spanish there are something like 23 tenses, and we use all of them

I'm learning my 6th. It gets easier every time, especially if you stick to euro languages. After 3-4 languages you'll always get 80% of the words because even very far away euro languages communicate so if you stumble upon a new word in say Russian, you'll have an equivalent in one of the three other languages most of the time.

I think most people can learn enough Spanish to understand a basic Spanish language film. The rest of the time its just about repeated exposure.
You just have to make associations to kind of guess the meaning of the word sometimes. Libro and book can be the same time, but you can sort of guess it by associating libro with library if that makes sense. "quiero leer un libro" means i want to do something and obviously its not "i want to do a library".

The thing is that Spanish (and other latin languages grammar) is VERY complex, way more than english for example. The same sentence can be said in 10 different ways and 8 of them means exactly the same, while the other 2 have subtle hints. Try to model that mathematically...
On the other hand this means that speaking 'understandable' Spanish is piss easy, we will understand you even if your grammar is fricked up. Speaking good Spanish is a little more complex. It also means that studying the grammar in high school a la chomsky is fricking insane. Sentences can be long as paragraphs with several verbs inside, and some words (fricking 'se') can mean 15 different things.
Another point that makes Spanish easy is the 'phonetics before all' rule that forces the words to be written exactly as pronounced and the big difference in prononciation among sounds (this has a name but I dont remember it): even if your prononciation is crap is very difficult to missunderstand it because sounds are so far appart from each other.
I do believe Spanish should be modified to 'clean' it after centuries (g/j, c/k, h, accent rules) but even so it is nowadays one of the simplest yet more complete laguages you can learn.
