if this eastern yaoi is as shit as this then the whole genre is fricking shit
moxxie, the man in a straight relationship, was totally emasculated, not even to elevate the wife, just in a way that made everyone feel sorry for her as the most underdeveloped, peripheral character who gets the shit luck of having to constantly cheerlead an insecure manchild
chaz is a skinny, annoying bisexual twink just like blitz, but he's at least annoying in a funny way, and not in a "these writers are unfunny fricking hacks" way

But the perfect blend of both will attract both audiences. It's how a lot of anime functions, after all.

          Anonymous

A lot of anime is also heavily geared towards a specific male or female audience. If anything it's much more common for Western media to deny the niche audiences and try to have as much universal appeal as possible.

            Anonymous

To add to this, the only reason people here started watching HB in the first place is because Americans are not used to something not being just "for everyone" and having a specific niche target audience. It's the same reason Twilight was lambasted back in the day because nobody realized or could articulate it was specifically for teenage girls and no one else.

Honestly, while it is a gay show, I respect that it exists but don’t respect the fact it promotes the gay agenda so thoroughly. Even the main couple is bi, how do you do that?

Cartoons are meant to depict over-exaggerated real expressions. That's why they work, you can recognize what the expression is about. Anyway this

Emotons can be diverse. It doesn't always have to signify annoyance, in these examples it also shows confusion or concentration

                Anonymous

Well, does it? When you see a pout, does "confusion or concentration" come to your mind? The point is that the expression doesn't help in helping you make out the emotion. For me it just looks pretty random in all of these cases, a default state basically.

In anime puffing up the cheeks is a childish, girlish expression of anger. It's often ironic (she's much too old to be acting like that; how silly and funny [even kids' shows like Ojamajo Doremi do this joke]) or occasionally straightforward like in that pic; Hina Ichigo is mentally about five or six years old.

Disagree hard with this guy. LotR is great but one of the few wrong lessons so much of fantasy fiction got from it was the need to bloat settings with so much meaningless lore.
LotR is great because the core story, journey and characters are great. The absurd amount of lore and backstory is the cherry ontop if you really want to get autistic over stuff and one I've always been indiffrent towards.

      Look at this scene.

Easily one of the best abd heartwarming moments in cinema. Does speaking a whole ass fake language or knowing ethe entire history of the f Dúnadan people and their bullshit is what makes this scene good.

Frick no. It's the fact experienced the journey with these characters. The fact you know what they all went through and what they mean to each other that gives stories signifiance. The overelaince on lore and detail I geniunly believe is one of the bigest mistakes that writers do that not only make so much of fantasy dull but now modern animation as they try to push this sort of style.

        Anonymous

The lore was for tolkien's own benefit to make the narrative consistent. When you add history and politic and legend to a setting you can then reference them to find a natural progression of the story which is more appreciable to the audience as there is now a certain weight to it. Decisions aren't being made arbitrarily just to satisfy the needs of the writer, they also just make sense given the world around them. The issue with modern lore building, like lucas in the prequels, is that he feels the need to show you everything that he worked on. He made it so he wants you to see it when its not necessary and would be better served as a single line of justification. And in cartoons and lots of vidya the 'deepest lore' shit ends up being shallower than it portrays itself and some how universally ties into the most fundamental myths of the setting consistently. There isn't any being a small part of a larger world, a porthole into strange and new, the MC is the SS Mary Sue and the entire world revolves around them and their destiny before any real investment takes place.

The thing about Tolkien and his wife is that they met and fell in love when they were teens, and were separated by their parents through all of the years of their education, until they were independent adults and they got together again.

Through all that time, with no contact, both stayed faithful to each other, yearning for one another.

And you can SEE this in the way Tolkien writes women and romantic relationships in his works.
Important female characters are kinda ethereal and radiant, extremely significant and awe-inspiring when present, but absent and far away most of the time, often acting as a guiding star and motivation for male characters (this is also in part because his mother died when he was very young, so his concept of her was more saintly and transcendental than actually a real person)

In his works, couples are often separated by circumstance, but their love burns bright in each other's absence.
The movies kind of twist this a little, by presenting Arwen's drama about choosing between eternal life and her love for Aragorn, but in the books this is a choice she made years ago. Aragorn and Arwen have been in love for decades upon decades, separated by duty and the state of the world, unwavering.

So in short, Tolkien loved his wife all his life, through the years he couldn't be with her, even through WWI, and he loved her so much that for him the very concept of love included its immutability in the face of absence and distance.

Chelsea would've been better if she was either
        A. Openly and entertainingly evil and not just regulated to be that in the remaining 15 minutes
        B. Actually sympathetic and capable of redemption because of her bond with Ruby
Having her be an irredeemable twist villain did damage not only to her as a character but also to the film as a whole because it renders it unmarketable
People complain about spoiling the climax and reveal she's evil but had they not done that they'd essentially set-up a plot of two teenage girls trying to push past their family's generations of conflict....only for audiences to find out peace was never an option and that Ruby's Grandma was right
The film falls apart because if Ruby bought into the kool-aid and never gave Chelsea a chance even after she saved her fricking life and just blindly trusted her grandma that an entire race is evil, the third act would've been avoided entirely
The audience is presented a potential nuanced subversion to what the trailer showed so when the final film double subverts it back it makes the unintended pro-xenophobia message look even more glaring

Adults in modern animated movies are often framed as misguided if not evil, and it's up to the kid protagonists to save the day with their new fresh view on the situation. So it's somewhat refreshing to have a movie where the adults end up being in the right. You can't appreciate it because it meant your FOTM waifu had to be evil, which was obvious to begin with.

Mate, the movie literally has scenes that make zero sense upon rewatch regarding Chelsea
It's bad twist villain writing 101 where a character isn't lying to another character but rather the audience
Again, if she was upfront evil she'd be great but instead she's a 2010's Disney twist villain

Cinemaphile complaining about xenophobia? Never thought I'd see the day, crazy what showing some teenage girl skin does to people.

There are times the adult is right and should be right
Do your homework, be responsible, don't take candy from suspicious people in vans, don't stray too far from safety, etc
Passing their bigotry onto their offspring and succeeding at it upon its validation isn't one of them
Ruby and Chelsea's bond is a highlight of the film so when Agatha warns her about Chelsea for the sin of simply being born a mermaid, is the audience not supposed to root for Ruby to prove her mother wrong especially given up to that point Chelsea was nothing but kind and supportive to Ruby?
The villain of this movie is literally what propelled the protagonist to finally accept herself
                Not her friends
                Not her love interest
                Not her family
                Let that sink in

                >The villain of this movie is literally what propelled the protagonist to finally accept herself
Yeah yeah and Jafar got Alladin to meet the Genie, let's give him a redemption arc too now.

                >Are you actually going to deny she's a FOTM waifu?
God you're dumb I'm obviously talking about your inability to care about characters you don't waifu/simp for.

I can care about any character just fine, I just think it's hypocritical to pretend to be all "love peace and kumbaya" when it's obvious you have a vested interested in that and wouldn't act that way under different circumstances. If you waifu an obviously evil character, it's stupid to complain when she's obviously evil and not the dindu nuffin you headcanoned her as.

Doing something different for the sake of doing something different is not something to be praised. It's cheap. Especially if it doesn't make sense in the story.

I already outlined the circumstances in which it would be praised.

From the beginning you have no arguments except your own fantasies about what the other side is thinking. You're an obnoxious moron.

You call that fantasies, I call that the truth. I am absolutely, 100% convinced that I have 5 different people jumping in to defend this mediocre villain from a mediocre movie entirely because you waifu her. Can you imagine 5 people on Cinemaphile jumping to the defense of a black guy, a lesbian or a trannie if the plot of the movie remained the exact same but you replaced Chelsea with them? Can you? The movie doesn't dedicate time showing him bonding with Aladdin or furthering his growth as a person

Ruby Gillman's movie was like if in the last 15 minutes of How to Train Your Dragon, they revealed that Toothless was pure evil and was manipulating Hiccup the whole time, and he needed to be defeated by Hiccup and his family.

Ruby and Chelsea's bond is a highlight of the film so when Agatha warns her about Chelsea for the sin of simply being born a mermaid, is the audience not supposed to root for Ruby to prove her mother wrong especially given up to that point Chelsea was nothing but kind and supportive to Ruby?

      from a bigtop burger thread

These are more /LULZ/ than Cinemaphile

I'm not going to deny that LotR is better written than Korra but this is kind of a moronic argument. One writer being more autistic than another doesn't make him better.

        Anonymous

I think it does, that autismo attention to detail and creating an entire mythology is better than any info dump

The overelaince on lore and detail I geniunly believe is one of the bigest mistakes that writers do that not only make so much of fantasy dull but now modern animation as they try to push this sort of style.

        >knowing ethe entire history of the Dúnadan people and their bullshit is what makes this scene good.
Yes? Of course it does, he wrote a damn poem that makes even better
All that is gold does not glitter,
        Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
        A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”
I have to hard disagree with you.
Hell think about it Aragon is the remnant of Numenor, literally superhuman beings that live for hundreds of years and his people went mad with that power, And here he is bowing to those who had none of those things yet shouldered the burden to defeat Sauron whereas the Numenors welcomed Sauron into their home.

          Anonymous

A lot of people who mostly focus on world building just end up info dumping to show off their world, so it takes more than attention to detail to write a good story.

          Anonymous

          >Yes? Of course it does, he wrote a damn poem that makes even better
It's like the scene with Galadriel giving Gimli some of her hair.
It's a great scene on its own, this (comparatively) lowly creature who up to this point has shown nothing but disdain for the elves, humbling himself in front of one of the high powers of the world, and said power honoring him in return.

But if you know the story of Feanor and Galadriel (in which Galadriel refuses to give her hair to the highest elf to ever live, who wanted the hair to use it in the creation of the greatest israeliteels in the whole history of the world), you know exactly how monumental the significance of her giving him some of her hair is.
And you can tell that Legolas, who is aware of this, changes his opinion of Gimli entirely when this happens.

In your example and this one, the scenes work on their own, and they're beautiful, but knowing the lore augments them.
Because Tolkien was a a fricking incredible writer.

I relate to this. But I also think we should understand that the glorified reckless adrenaline-driven lifestyle of partying around and finding adventures is not for everyone. I find it very stressful and I probably wouldn't enjoy it, and real-life interesting mistakes are often life-wrecking, like getting a girl pregnant. It still hurts somewhat because this lifestyle still gets glorified a lot because a lot of people are wired for constant excitement and activity, but I've mostly accepted this kind of life is not for me and I should try finding and making small friend groups on my own based on my own interests. The problem is, I suck at doing the latter too.

I'm also there, anon. I'm 26, gonna be 27 sooner rather than later. No use griping about it, really, I'm just trying to go to school now so I can finally do things I'd like and have a real career of some kind. I'm quitting my old job, I've been trying to hang out with the people from my job and form friendships with those whom I can, I'm trying to keep in touch with people. Inertia is hard to break out of for everybody but we must try or we will fricking rot in it.

I personally only use schizo very very rarely, in response to someone whom I am either in the middle of an argument with when I realize they are fixating on something that noone would ever consider to be that integral to their argument if it were genuinely sane (examples for this escape me because I usually disengage from futher discussion, seeing no chance of either of us being convinced of the other's perspective)
or when I enter a thread and see someone trying to derail it with the same tired complaints that get reposted time and again to the point that it looks like the same guy just spamming the board with his shit opinion whenever the topic comes up (like that homosexual who considers the NUMBER OF EPISODES a TV show has to be a valid metric of measuring one show's superiority over another)
but yeah, it has become another one of those bog-standard insults that loses all meaning because of its overuse in any circumstance.

Because he has zero clue if he wants to burn down the freakshow or let it make him money. He also has zero idea about how to run a business that isn't government funded, no matter how many of his dick-slobbers say otherwise.

Yiu can tell he wants to do something with it since it's such a cultural phenomena, but he has no idea what, and frankly a lot of what people complain about isn't even his doing. It's like he inherited a busted up crackden that stood for years, and suddenly when he moves in everyone goes "UGH WHAT A WRECK, SHAME ON YOU, LOOK AT WHAT A MESS YOUR PLACE IS!"
You can only put so much lipstick on a pig, and the man is hardly a makeup artist.

No, my issue with Twitter isn't the website itself, shitty websites come and go. My problem is that it's such a center of the internet that it seeps into everything, even us down here in Cinemaphile, we were never centralized and yet we still suffer the dirty waters that flow from the streets above.
I just wish you could leave a website and not hear about it anymore, like the old internet, instead of it following you everywhere.

Given that they picked Twitter before, whichever new place has the most anti-artist web design, like no archival view, no paginated scrolling, no meaningful way to sort or present their uploads, and mandatory jpg compression.

In the space of less than a year he has reduced the company's workforce by 80% most of whom left because he expected them to work like they were in fricking SpaceX, put in place ridiculous API changes that were designed specifically to frick over third party bot programmers which caused multiple other sites to follow suit, made a programme that lets you pay for checkmarks which pissed off most of his advertisers and sponsors and then recently did the tweet cap thing. He has run the site into the ground financially and when it inevitably stops making any money he will pull the plug on it completely, which the backlash for will be glorious to watch.

Honestly I'm glad he's fumbling so damn hard with what was literally the easiest thing to not frick up. All those corperate lemmings who follow suite will just bring about the new roblox based social media platform faster. On an unrelated note, you should probably stock up on as many roblox as you can now, because something tells me they'll be a bit harder to come by soon.

            >In the space of less than a year he has reduced the company's workforce by 80%
And nothing changed. We know for a fact that most of those 'workers' were just adult-daycare workers who sit around drinking starbucks coffee all day.

            >made a programme that lets you pay for checkmarks
On it's own this is pretty moronic, but tbf it's not like twitter checkmarks were used for anything other than moron bragging rights. If you can LOSE your checkmark for posting naughty opinions, which some celebs did, it's proof that the checkmark isn't there to validate your identity- it's a status symbol. There should be NO WAY to lose a checkmark that states that you are who you say you are, except for lying about your identity. If you can lose it for any other reason, that means it was never about identity, it was about being approved by Twitter. What do you mean "you said a slur, John Smith, your rights of being John Smith are revoked now"?
            > he will pull the plug on it completely, which the backlash for will be glorious to watch.
Yes. Yes it will be, and I'll be there to shitpost among the rubble.
            >and then recently did the tweet cap thing.

You do know what "value" means in this case, right? It's not about how well a website functions, it's about how well investors will *predict* people will like the changes, and invest or pull out based on said predictions.
All investing is, is going "Hmm I think John will throw money at this hooker, I'll throw some too, to seem cool" "Hmm I think Bill won't throw money at this hooker, I won't throw any, to seem cool." "SHIT, JOHN DIDN'T THROW ANY MONEY, NOW MY MONEY WENT TO WASTE!" "SHIT BILL THREW MONEY, I SHOULDVE THROWN SOME TOO!" "REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" "REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

                >company has nearly no external investors left because everyone can clearly see that the site is a financial time bomb under Musk's direction
final post on this because it's derailed the thread, but this isn't even going into the fact that the site has lost billions in brand value alone after changing the logo to a fricking X recently lmao. You're failing to understand that a website run on advertisers cannot just get that value back on a whim, like in any industry advertisers bear grudges with platforms that actively frick them over. After firing most of his staff and a lot of them resigned he put in a bunch of half assed band aids for moderation and the main source of income for the site, the advertisers, didn't see it as a good platform for them to market with anymore, which in turn caused the externals to shit their pants and turn tail. he has zero experience with this type of advertiser led platform, and it shows.

                Anonymous

But this isn't about advertisers, the point I was making is that nothing changed with the website when he fired 80% of the workers, because those 80% didn't do shit.

    >freedom vs responsibility
You can argue that most of the shows from around that era were tackling that theme, it's a core part of the coming of age plot that seems to be ingrained in most Disney stuff now. It would have been more interesting if they had actually subverted this given that they were willing to write darker moments in. Basically everything in that post is what they had based the characters on, they just ended up completely fricking up the continuity of everything alongside never letting Star, the titular protagonist of the show, actually grow and adapt. It was fricking bizarre how many opportunities they had that they just threw away for the sake of keeping it a mediocre kids cartoon

This is kind of why I'm not too pissed about Wander Over Yonder being cancelled. If the titular hero is always right by being always kind, there's not much more you can do after his philosophy literally saves the galaxy. Gravity Falls is the only one that comes to mind when the big bad is defeated by something other than friendship.

I feel like it's a difficult thing to escape from, especially given how execs take pitches these days for the most basic shit ideas and then sand them down until they have barely anything left. It's why Infinity Train got massively fricked, it didn't want to mass appeal to the youngest audience and instead focused more on the older audience which ended up pissing off the HBO execs enough to cancel it.

Bit of an inverse example, but years ago on this board I ended up writing so many essays and analyses on Lord Dominator's character and how well she works both by herself and in relation to the rest of the show that someone said they had compiled a Notepad of all of them

I've moved on to original stuff now but I still appreciate how well she pulls off the low-functioning sociopath shit, especially all the horribly off-color comments she makes about explicitly murdering people

It's a good effort, but you can't replace lyrics in a song with words that have a different syllable count. It's cheap, lazy, and erodes the whole effort. It's also extremely common.
