Another question is, what is the significance of the helmet? That helmet was used by that society to allow neutral parties to punish convicts. It's a relic, like Romulus's tooth. Why is Marcus/Caleb chosen to pass judgement? He's not neutral.

Also, there's a painting on the wall in a flashback. The holy man in the painting has his legs splayed like a convict, not together like a Necromancer or Marcus; and he is perpendicular like a man being spun, not vertical like Mother or Marcus. Who is that holy man, what was he being punished for, and why is his punishment venerated?

So many questions about that world, and its worldbuilding.

HBO is not run by the same homosexuals that were responsible for the "golden age of cable" during the 00's, basically The Sopranos through Westworld S1. Those days are gone.

The guy running it now wanted to take on Netflix so everything went woke and shitty. Can't wait to see how badly they ruin House of the Dragon.

HBO is the original woke shit company, they were forcing homosexuals into everything before it was cool.

Gays have been on TV since the 90's and it was always disgusting / controversial. Always treated as transgressive to the audience. That's not woke. That's just traditional liberalism putting their toe across a boundary.

What changed with wokeness is not giving a frick where the audience's boundaries may be, what they may or may not prefer to see for a service they're paying for. It's a reliance on ESG over subscriber numbers. That's a new thing that didn't pop up until the late 2010's and corresponds to the decline of HBO. They were doing great when they were at the cutting edge of liberal transgressiveness. Now they're trying to play catch up to wokeness and failing.

The story is mediocre from the get-go isn't? Not a good starting base when you consider GoT was only ever good when the two hacks had the decent books from which to adapt episodes, plummeted in quality in the meh books and then took a hard turn to shitty town when they had no books.

So, why did Westworld fall off so bad?
Personally, I lost basically all interest when it shifted focus almost entirely to a woman and two black people rather than William. But, I'm a racist and sexist, and I don't imagine those are universal values.

      >So, why did Westworld fall off so bad?
Because it only had enough good ideas for one season.

It was only ever supposed to be a mini-series, which was ordered late in development to full series. But instead of doing an anthology series with each season being a new mini-series set in that world then just expanded the ongoing story in a completely moronic way. Whats worse is that it happened right as #MeToo was going so you have a massive changes to tone and writing and casting trying to mesh with a show that's essentially from a previous era. I believe Westworld will be shown as a perfect example of two contrasting generations clashing.

Was it #Metoo? It looked more like 'here's something which looks cool, let's film it even if there's no internal logic to it.' Also, Aaron Paul was profoundly miscast and his character as written sucked hard and long.

Universal values don't exist but even if they did, and whataver we have that mostly approximates them; being a racist and misogynist pig is definitely not one of them.

I just want to be approximately non-racist and non-misogynist.

      >it shifted focus almost entirely to a woman and two black people
This was a big reason, Dolores became completely unlikable, they added a crappy revolution plot rather than just have the robots going nuts, they took the story out of the Westworld park and added a bunch of boring corporate drama/espionage, I stopped watching partway through season 2 bit I heard it kept getting worse and worse as it went

I'm pretty sure the original William story is still there and mostly intact, they just shifted the ending to the S2 episode "Riddle of the Sphinx". The show badly needs an edit that removes Maeve to convert it to it's original mini-series format.

S2 was really hard to get through at times and it's a shame because it's such high budget stuff with a few good ideas.
