He was being paid to retrieve the money, and so he would do just that. He's a man of principle.

He murders the two of the associates from his employer as well as eventually murdering his employer.
While this might be different in the book, movie Anton is definitely seeking the money for himself.

But didn't he kill the guy that hired him?

Anton has an extreme hatred of incompetent people. He killed the businessmen for fricking up the deal. He almost killed the store clerk that can't even properly explain when the store closes. He makes fun of Wells for his shitty way of life. He kills his boss for not trusting in him and hiring more people which only complicated things. Anton considers himself the ideal, he does his job perfectly and the standards he follows would never lead to him dying pathetically like Wells.

Why don't more movies have competent villains? The entire plot revolves around Anton.

Ironic since a lot of the humor in previous Cohen brother's films come from incompetent villains.

Based on what? The entire movie revolving around him relentlessly tracking down the money?

I thought he delivers the money to the cartels at the end of the book?

He did. He says his expenses were 100 grand but there's 2.4 million dollars. I assume he wanted a cut of the money and he wanted to work directly for the cartel after that

He does. In the book he wins in every sense of the word. The car accident doesn't even happen. The movie is still fantastic though.

Guess I gotta reread. Anton talks way more in the books which is one thing I prefer about the films.

In my filmmaking class, we argued who was the best villain in any movie ever. We concluded he is it. No remorse whatsoever, has the smarts and the perfect weapon to be known by.

The cartel killed him. Not Anton. The cartel tracked him down by talking to Carla Jeans mother, and she inadvertently gave away where he was.

Chigurgh didn't kill Moss, Mexicans from the cartel did. They found out by speaking with his mother in law who blabbed details of where they were going. Chigurgh would have heard about the murder through the news, gone back to the room thinking Moss would have hidden the briefcase in the same way he did at the earlier motel, which he did.

I think Fargo is more palatable for repeated viewings

Carla was actually a way better character than I initially thought she would be. Loyal, loving, and smarter than you'd think.
